🥶 then 🥵 & Avoid I-84
June 1 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 54 °F
I camped last night because it was either that or ride another 80 miles with the moose. Meese? Mooses? Whatever you call more than one, no thanks. Church parking lot it is.
I woke up at 0300 shivering because my battery had run out on my heated hoodie. I had already placed a second battery within hands reach, so I don't think I even opened my eyes to change it then go back to sleep.
When my alarm woke me at 0400, I jumped up because I thought I set it wrong. No, 0400. But I forgot how far north I was. It was already light out. I was packed by 0430 but still getting my gear on when a woman briskly walked by me, said good morning, did a lap of the parking lot, then left the way she came. Wow. They get started early up here!
Anyway, I rolled at 0445 with all my heated gear and over gloves/boots on in the 33°F stupidness. I encountered another moose in the road, but not a close call 👍. I hit a little sprinkle rain right after that, but the roads were still good and it didn't last long at all. Neither did the cold. By noon I was sweltering in all of my gear, so I peeled it off at Seacoast HD. Sunshine and blue skies the rest of the day 👍.
When I got into New Hampshire, the roads got pretty bad. All of the sudden my bike tire hit something significant, but I hadn't seen anything in the road. I looked back and saw an object, so I flipped a u-ey to see what it was. A driver was pointing back at it, so I knew something fell off the bike. It was the cover behind the front wheel that protects the wiring and stuff in front of the engine 🤦. I kind of need that.
When I got back to it, a trike had stopped to pick it up. I pulled up next to him and he explained how to zip tie it on, and showed me on his bike. I thanked him and he took off, then I shoved it in a plastic bag, shoved it into my saddlebag, and shoved off out of there. Later.
I had another day of lovely roads and friendly drivers until I got on I-84 when the trucks shut everything down. The only lane they wouldn't use was the climbing lane built just for them. Nope, they had the be in the left and middle lanes going 15-20 mph under the speed limit. The interstate got so jammed at one point that my GPS traffic feature said it was an hour delay. Nope, back roads. Soooo much better.
I'm camped up by a Fire Department at the back of the parking lot by the trees. I had planned on asking them if I could, but I think they're asleep and I think "they" is only 1 person, so I didn't. I'm in NY now, quite a bit further south than this morning, but I'm still in the heated hoodie and socks, just in case.
Hope to see you on the road! Remember, NO WHINING! ✌️
