  • Hanging Out

    26. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Whew. I'm tired of being a tourist right now. I need a break, which is why I decided to stay in Noosa for a week. I wasn't able to get a private room yesterday, BUT I will get one on Sunday for my last four nights here. Yay!

Today I've been strolling in town, making a massage appointment, and finding a pedicure shop.

Now, I'm back at the hostel with my electronics to download and organize my photos. I take waaaaay too many, but love looking at them.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

  • Noosa Everglades

    27. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Yesterday, I just hung out at the hostel and even had dinner there, not so bad fish and chips with salad.

This morning, I was up really early (before 05:00) texting with friends in Europe about the next hashing events in Scotland and Germany. Then I was up and out, making my way across the street to the bus stop by 08:15.

Today, I'm visiting one of the world's two everglades systems. (The other one is in Florida.) Here is what one of local tourism blogs says about this:

"There are only two Everglades in the World – the first being in Florida and the other is our very own Noosa Everglades. The definition of an Everglade is: A tract of low, swampy land characterized by tall grass and branching waterways. There is very little information about the Noosa Everglades and it is thought the term Everglade was first used to describe part of the extensive water way and wetlands of the Noosa River by tour guides" (https://www.kanukapersaustralia.com/what-is-the…).

Anyway, I'm here and it's amazing! The boat ride over Lake Cootharaba was soothing...except for the four tweeny-year-old Irish girls alternating between their phones and talking about anything but what we were doing here. The lake is 50 square kilometers but only about 1.5 meters deep.

Aboard the M.V. Cooloola, we made our way across the lake to a jetty at Fig Tree Point where the four Irish were put in canoes. No, not because of their rudeness. Apparently they and 16 others added a canoe ride to their trip, so 10 of them paddled up river, while the other 10 paddled down. The boat was much quieter after their departure.

Those of us not taking canoes went for a short walk (400 meters) on the Maleleuca circuit track, where we saw the magnificent tea trees (a.k.a. paper bark) that stain the water reddish-brown and give it its mirror-like surface when still.

Back onboard, we started up the Upper Noosa River, but had to pick up two of the Irish girls who could not make the canoe do anything but circles. We wasted 20 minutes trying to get them in the boat.

Anyway, while dragging their canoe, we spotted a huge black cormorant, but no other wildlife, which was disappointing. But when we arrived at Harry's Hut, we spotted the lace monitor!! This one was quite small; they can get up to two meters long! Also called a lacy or tree goanna, most Aussies just call them goannas. Their closest relative is the giant Komodo dragon found in Indonesia and that I saw way back on Day 138.

This one has learned that humans are messy eaters, and he found some cake crumbs under the table. While he was eating, one of the Irish girls was amazed, saying that he ate just like a dinosaur. Wait, what? Does she think Jurassic Park was real? Please put her back in a canoe. Or maybe she and her friends can go swimming. They can continue being amazed when they see some of the bull sharks that are known to visit the river. Just kidding. Mostly. 😉

We're at Harry's Hut now, which reminds me of my mom's grandparents' home in Texas.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

P.S.: I wanted to keep the end of the trip with the beginning since not much happened after noon. The return trip with 31 people was dominated by the four Irish taking up the front of the boat, laughing at who cares, and not paying any attention to anything but themselves. I went to the back to chat with the skipper, which turned out very nice. We spotted pelicans, little perch, another black cormorant, and a pied cormorant before getting back to the beach. We had a late lunch there and got back to the bus stop at just before 16:00.

  • Montazuma's (not revenge)

    28. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

After I got back from the Everglades tour, I went straight back to the hostel, grabbed a bottle of wine, and walked to the nearby ferry dock. A Hasher friend of mine, Weak As, is the skipper of one of the boats, and he invited me on the sunset cruise. His wife jumped on board soon after, and we had a great couple of hours. I hadn't seen her since August 2018 and him since this May, so it was great catching up.

They dropped me back at the dock, then I grabbed some food and went to bed.

This morning all I had to do was gather my stuff and check out. Once done, I walked to Target and found a travel hair dryer (dual voltage, folding handle), but I forgot to get an Aussie plug adapter. Grrr. I should just cut it off again.

Then I found a Mexican restaurant called Montazuma's, where I'm having a Dos Equis cerveza and a couple of tacos, one fish (yummy) and one frijoles, almonds, and raisins mix (edible but weird).

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

P.S.: When you first arrive in deployed locations like Iraq and Afghanistan, it is very common to get a case of what the military jokingly and painfully refers to as Montazuma's Revenge, a violent diarrhea that makes you lose a couple of kilograms (five pounds) over 24 hours. It can be so dehabilitating that the Air Force laboratories at Wright Patterson Air Force Base are studying the differences in servicemembers' digestive tract bacteria before they deploy compared to after they come home. I am one of the few fortunate people whose stomach doesn't seem to have an issue with this, so I participated in the study. (Don't ask how. Yuck.) I hope they soon find a way to overcome it.

  • Noosa National Park

    29. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I had a great evening with my friend, on the boat then at his house for dinner and guitar with his wife and 18-year-old daughter.

I had a nice morning, waking up in a private room and taking my time getting moving. I had a late breakfast and bean walking to Noosa National Park at just a bit after 10:00.

I've come about 4 kilometers and stopped at Alexandria Bay for a short snack of grapes and hummus (yummy). Although I didn't spot any koalas where a sign indicated there may be some, I have seen pied cormorants, turtles, crows, and a little brown-chested bird that I don't recognize. Great day so far.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

  • Lunch With Hashers

    30. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Yesterday's walk totalled right around 12 kilometers/7.5 miles. 😱 I got back to the main beach area and, knowing it was mostly uphill, took an Uber a couple of kilometers to the area where Target is located. I was hoping for a pedicure, but they didn't have time for a walk in. So, I made an appointment for tomorrow and popped in the cinema next door to look at the schedule.

"Rocketman" was playing at 14:00 and it was 13:57, so I treated myself to the matinee. I enjoyed it because of how Elton John's music was woven into the dialogue. I think I enjoyed this better than "Bohemian Rhapsody."

After the movie, I walked the 2 km back to he beach for a superb dinner of caramelized pork belly at sunset. What a glorious way to end the day. Despite being stuffed--I also had an entree of calamari--I could not resist having a small cup of coconut-rasberry ice cream on the walk back to the hostel.

Full of delicious flavors and knowing how bad my legs, hips, and back were going to hurt tomorrow, I went straight to my room to finish another book, and I was asleep before 21:00.

I woke up at 02:30 in agony from sleeping on my side. My hips were screaming. But fortunately I was able to readjust and get a couple of hours more rest.

I was out of bed around 07:00 and out of the hostel at about 08:00. I had a lovely poached egg breakfast, then actually found a swimsuit that fits without underwire. I also replenished some shower stuff, then hung on the beach with another book until my 10:30-11:30 massage. Ooooohhhhh yeeeeeaaaaahhhhhh.

Now, Weak As and his wife have collected me and we're off for the Tuesday lunch with the Hashers.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

  • Another Lunch With Hashers

    31. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

What a very nice lunch with about 10 Hashers, a few whom I've met before. After food at a BYO cafe, four of us went across the road to the Buderin Tavern for a drink, then another at the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), then another at the Alexandra Headland SLSC. We took the fourth of our threesome home from the Alex SLSC, then they dropped me off at the hostel. I went to my room to read and was so full from lunch and drinks I didn't bother with dinner. So I finished the book I started yesterday morning and went to sleep.

Fortunately my back and hips didn't wake me up, but I am now sore in some of the spots the Ukrainian masseur found yesterday. But I feel much better even so.

Now, I'm in my room getting ready to meet up with Weak As again for lunch with a different group of Hashers. Yay!

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

  • On to Brisbane!

    1. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Lunch was nice. Weak As, Horse and I went to the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club afterwards for a couple of ciders, then they went on to the Yacht Club and I went home. It was about 1630 by that time, so grabbed my hoodie and went down to the beach for sunset. While eating a lite early dinner, I had a little visitor. So cute! After that I was back in my room to start a new book and get some sleep.

I woke early, cleaned up, packed my stuff, checked out, stored the bags, and breakfasted on the beach. Back to the hostel to get my bags, then across to the bus stop. The Stray bus grabbed me and one other girl at 11:30, and now we're on the road south to Brisbane.

  • Downtown Brizzy

    2. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

After I arrived in Brizzy, my friend Marais (a.k.a. Tickler) met me at the hostel where Stray dropped me off. We took the train back to her house, where we both kicked back on the sofa, had a small dinner, and went to bed early.

She was up and going early to get to the gym and work. I left the house around 08:30 to take the train back into town.

Jumping off at Roma Street Station, I walked to Lake Precinct - Roma Street Parklands. The park was.stunning even though it's off-season. Water dragons, Ibis, golden orb spiders, ducks, mynas, honey bees...the park was absolutely alive. I had a lovely stroll through the grounds, including a path called Fern Gully that led to a rainforest section. With a lake and multiple water features, I was surprised at the myriad of flora and fauna that it hid in the middle of this large city.

Nearby, I found a pedicure place (finally!). After that, I took a long stroll straight down the city, passing City Hall and a very long pedestrian shopping area, then entering the Botanical Gardens on the east side of downtown. Not anywhere as stunning as the park, what was unusual for me was seeing the ibis nesting in the palms. Just make sure to dodge the large pools of droppings as you walked underneath them!

I popped out of the Gardens at the Old Government House, then walked back towards Central Station (train) past the heritage buildings and a lovely park dedicated to Queen Victoria.

Now, I'm on my way back to the hostel to wait for Tickler to meet me when she gets out of work at lunchtime.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

  • Angry Birds

    3. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Picking up from yesterday.... I popped back to the hostel to wait for Tickler to get off work, and once she met me, we had a nice lunch at the nearby tavern. Then we jumped on the City Cat, a public transportation catamaran ferrying up and down the river, so she could be tour guide. She was excellent and honestly could do it professionally. Bonus: she has a gorgeous canvas to work with. Brizzy is absolutely lovely.

We did a completely circuit--about two hours--and jumped off at South Bank. What a quirky little place with its market stalls, eateries, bars, and beach area. By the time we got the train back to her station and drove the one kilometer back to her house, we were both wiped. She made a delicious dinner, and I was in my room at 20:00 to read, but I fell asleep before getting through 20 pages.

She was up and out again this morning to go to the gym, and I was ready when she got back. At about 08:00 we went to her pancake place. Delicious! Two light and fluffy crepes topped with berries, powdered sugar, and thick cream. Wow.

Back to the house for an hour, then we ran to the pharmacy so I could grab some hair dye in preparation for the Scotland hash trip (!!!!). She then dropped me off at a beautiful little park that was near where she had an appointment. Unfortunately, the hooded lapwings (a.k.a. plovers) must be nesting because as soon as I got there, they started screaming and dive bombing me. We were all so stressed out that I walked a couple of kilometers to a burger joint that serves beer, which is where I am now.

  • Australian Zoo!

    4. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Crikey! Right now I'm at the Australian Zoo, The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's old stomping ground. But before I get into that, here's what happened yesterday.

Tickler picked me up at the burger joint and we got the train into downtown. We made.our way to Queen Street where Mojo Webb was playing a couple of sets for International Blues Music Day. We listened to a couple of songs, then found a nearby Irish pub for a Kilkenny beer and small lunch.

Then we went to the other Irish pub and had another couple of beers while waiting for the music to begin. The young woman was good, but her voice was very muffled by whatever mix she was using on the microphone.
We left there and walked across the bridge to South Bank where they have a noodle market. Gyoza and Taco Rice! Yay, Okinawa!

Back to the house by about 18:00 and we were both pooped, so it was an early night. I finished my book, took a shower, and hit the sack.

She was up and gone at 05:30, and I was right behind her, grabbing an Uber to the Greyhound bus station in town. The mirror-like skyscrapers reflected the sunrise in all its glory.

I grabbed the Greyhound at 07:30 and was at the Zoo by about 08:40. They opened at 09:00 and we were off! Here's what I've seen so far:

    - Echidnas burrowed under their enclosure's bedding.
    - Asian Small-Clawed Otters playing
    - Eastern Water Dragons, Mary River Turtles, Land Mullets and a huge Perentie (Aussie's largest lizard) all sunning themselves
    - A decent-sized Komodo Dragon staring at us like we were breakfast
    - Rhinoceros Iguanas also enjoying the sunshine
    - An Albino Burmese Python large enough to eat a small child
    - A smallish Reticulated Python (4 meters small)
    - Aldabra Giant Tortoises (I met Jasper)
    - More Eastern Water Dragons sunning
    - Beautiful Elkhorn and Staghorn Ferns
    - Cameron the Crocodile, a concrete replica of how big salties can get in the wild...if allowed
    - Koalas!
    - Salty Acco and Cassie*
    - Salty Agro and Cookie* (Agro, short for Aggressive, is the crock from TV that kept eating Steve's lawnmowers)
    - Salty Casper and girlfriend*
    - Africa Exhibit: giraffe, zebras, and three rhinos including a youngster. The two zebras were a Grévy's or Imperial Zebra (the largest and most engandeted) and a Plains Zebra
    - Meercats!
    - 6-year-old William the Cheetah (I met him, too!)
    - A Red Panda
    - And two Bengal Tiger sisters, where I am now.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

    * The zoo puts girls in with the boys so they can all do what they would do in the wild and have as normal a life as possible in captivity. Although the females build their nests, the keepers remove and destroy the eggs soon after they're laid.

  • Australian Zoo Day 2!

    5. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Crikey! What a great day yesterday! Here's what happened the second half of the day at the zoo:

    - 9-week-old Sumatran Tiger cub Nelson
    - Alpine Dingoes Archie, Eve (photo), and Jira
    - Croc show starring Acco
    - I met Pip the Binturong, a 15-year-old male, and his sister. They smell like popcorn (it's the pee). Their closest relative is the civet, you know, the cat that poops really expensive coffee beans. While feeding Pip, a little water dragon came scrounging for dropped fruit as he does every day. He was standing on my foot, so I reached down and pet him.
    - The otter show starring Daisy and Percy
    - I finished the day feeding kangaroos and wallabies.

I left the zoo right at closing (17:00) to walk to the hotel about 1.5 kilometers down the street. I checked in, pre-ordered breakfast, and had Indian delivered. Yummy.

After an okay sleep in a nice room, I was up for brekky, then walking to the zoo by 07:45 to arrive before 08:10 for my first animal encounter of the day...Tiger!

I met Scout, a 3-year-old, 140-kilogram Sumatran tiger born and handraised here at the zoo. He's the half-brother of the new cub Nelson (same mother). We met him in the orchard where he can spy on the zebra, which he really enjoys, as you can probably imagine. He's pretty much a teenager and he likes to push the keepers. After trying several times to get him to walk back towards the Southeast Asia part of the park and after he responded by flopping in the ground and rolling on his back as if to say, no, I'm not getting out of bed, they called the truck to give him a ride back to his enclosure. He was very vocal, making several different sounds, from huffing sounds to rumbly growls. It was pretty funny, but incredibly jaw dropping. His paws were at least as big as my face. Words can't describe how incredible this animal was.

    - Wetland birds, including Brolga and Jabirus
    - Koalas!
    - Rainforest aviary with a male Eclectus and several different types of doves
    - Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombats
    - Herpetarium with most of Aussie's deadly snakes, a King Cobra, a Gila Monster, a Green Python, and a couple of Eastern Diamondbacks, to name a few
    - Wedge-Tailed Eagle, Aussie's largest bird of prey
    - Nelson the Sumatran tiger cub on his walk (Nelaon's going to be in trouble with the groundskeeper for killing his shrubs)
    - Giraffes: 6-year-old female Skye, female Kabibi, and female calf Sophie

Now I'm in the Crocoseum where I'm about to see the main show. It's just starting now!

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

P.S.: After the noon show, I ran out of steam, so here's what happened during the rest of my zoo adventure:

    - Main Show:
-- Archie and Eve Dingoes saying hello
-- Keeto, Blue and Gold Macaw, showing us how to recycle
-- Lots of macaws, lots of snakes
    -- Male Jabiru
-- A Great and Pied Cormorant, the latter of which did not want to go home
-- Yellow-tailed black cocky, red-tail black cockys, lady mitchel (white cocky), rainbow lorakeets
    -- Star: Weeper, a 15-foot male Salty

    - Cassowary!
    - Shinglebacks nicknamed Pine Cone Lizard, related to blue-tongue skinks
    - A sleeping Tasmanian Devil
    - American alligators
    - And finishing with a rhino!

DJ is a 17-year-old male Southern White Rhinoceros born and raised in captivity. He was brought from Melbourne as part of the breeding program, and he has three local girlfriends. He also has a new calf at this zoo, his fifth one in total. He weighs about 2 tons and his head alone weighs around 225 kilograms. At 17 he's middle-aged; the oldest male in captivity recently died at age 45. There are about 20,000 Southern White rhinos in the wild, and the Black Rhino is worse shape. Unfortunately, the last male Northern White rhino just died leaving two females, a mom and her daughter, who are the last of the species. You and I will see the extinction of this magnificent animal because of poaching. Rhino horn is still a huge commodity on the black market, with Vietnam and China being the worst offenders. Powdered horn is worth more than gold or even cocaine. It I becoming so rare now that people are breaking into museums to steal horns and are even poaching rhinos living in zoos. I am so fortunate to have seen this gentle giant up close.

Well, I had an amazing two days at the Australian Zoo. I can't believe Steve Irwin died in 2006; it seems like just a few years ago. But his spirit and life mission is very much alive.

After walking back to the motel about an hour before the zoo closed, I watched some Netflix, ate some dinner, and read my book.

I was up early enough to walk back to the zoo to catch the 09:35 bus back to Brizzy. Tickler picked me up at the train/bus station and us continuing her terrific tour of the city.

    8. august 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

After lunch, Tickler took me to Mt. Gravatt, another beautiful lookout over Brisbane. Since we had a large lunch with a gorgeous white wine, we were both sleepy, so we went back to the house where we stayed the rest of the evening.

We were up this morning for Tickler's appointment and I found a barber! Step 1 complete in my hair mission for Scotland! Tickler is having hers done now, then I get to complete Steps 2 and 3!

The hair is going to be epic, but I am very sad to be leaving Australia. I found out at the Zoo that I should've only been here for 90 days. Today makes 106. Oops. The Home Affairs web site says they give a 28-day grace period, so I should be fine at Immigration this evening. Fingers crossed.

    9. august 2019, Østrig ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We almost finished my new hair last night. I have a little finishing touch for later, but I think you get the drift.

My flight left Australia at 23:00 and after about 13.5 hours I arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The best part of the flight was that I had an entire row of four seats to myself! I was able to sleep on my side and put my feet up, all while keeping my seatbelt on. Once I arrived, it was just like Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, and Kuwait--hazy and dusty and hot. Luckily, I didn't have to leave the international terminal, but it had both a Starbucks and a Hard Rock Cafe. I take pictures of coffee mugs for my brother and I collect HRC pins, so cool.

I'm somewhere over Europe now and I'm already on Scotland time. Noon in Scotland is 21:00 in Brisbane, so it's really been 33 hours since my last post and I've been traveling for 22 hours with about 3 hours to go. Ugh.

  • Kelso

    10. august 2019, Skotland ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

I got into Edinburgh without issue and took the bus to my friend's village of South Queensferry.

After getting settled in, Helen and I walked down the hill to the town center. The picture of the bridges are from the main Street. Her house is between the two bridges on the left. We had a fantastic meal of White Pudding Supper with chips and brown sauce for me and fish and chips for her. I've been waiting so very long to have white pudding again. See here for more about it: https://g.co/kgs/HTDt7F. Yummy!!!

We took the bus back up to her house (a whole two stops but worth avoiding the hill). Once we finished a tiny wee dram--the Doric word is thochty--I was off to bed.

I slept about 5 hours straight before waking, but I was able to get back to sleep for another couple, so it was a really good rest. We were both up before 07:00 and already working around the house, such as setting up more beds for more guests and doing laundry.

Now, we're having a light lunch (tomato soup) at a hotel in Kelso. We've come here to reconnaissance the hash trail for our Red Dress Run on the 22d. Apparently I'm now in charge, so I've changed it to a pub crawl. 300 or so Hashers all in red dresses--and I mean all--making their way through the village center while hitting four pubs along the way. What could possibly go wrong? LOL!

Cludgie: noun, toilet. "I need to go to the cludgie before we leave."
