Relaxing by the pool

Yesterday was a great day doing pretty much all of the major tourist traps. I even snuck away from my tuktuk driver at one stop to hit the Hard Rock, which was just past the US Embassy (pic of nothing below).

I've booked a bus to Siem Reap in the morning, the location of the infamous Angkor Wat. Today, I'm just hanging out at the hostel. Pool, food, drinks, wifi...why not. There's a Seeing Hands (blind masseuses) massage parlor about five house down, so I'll hit that later if I can drag myself off the couch.

I'm loving this very flexible schedule. I feel like a teenager who doesn't have to go to school. Sleep when I want, eat when I want, walk around or not, couch potato or not. Awesome! I can't believe I've been traveling for more than two months already, and I'm not tired of it!

Bus to Siem Reap

I'm on a bus to Siem Reap, the location of Angkor Wat (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat). I'm planning to stay for just a couple of days, which should be plenty of time to see the temple and other smaller but impressive sites in the surrounding countryside. I'll go back to Phnom Penh before heading south to the coast.

Yesterday = 🛋️🥔.

Angkor Wat at Sunrise

It was a magnificent sunrise at Angkor Wat this morning. After that temple, we went to two others, including the one overtaken by trees and used in Angelina Jolie's film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."

We got back to the hostel about 1139, so I've just finished a quick lunch and now I'm off for a nap. After the pool party yesterday, getting up at 0345 this morning hurt.

Waterfall and phallic symbols

Today began at 0730 (why do I do this to myself?). Our first stop on the tour was the river of a thousand Lingas. Shiva lingas are a Hindu representation of the joining of male and female. The male is the column or round symbol in the center of a square or circle, the female, with a spout. Once water flows over the male, through the female, and out of the spout, it is believed to be blessed, similar to Catholicism's holy water. Because it is rainy season, the waters are high and most of the carvings cannot be seen. However, I grabbed a couple of shots off the internet. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingam)

We're at the waterfall now. It's great to get in the water to cool off. But like Vietnam and despite the signs everywhere saying don't litter, there is garbage everywhere. The one kilometer or so walk to the waterfall was an exercise in not stepping in trash. Even the waterfall has garbage accumulated in the eddys, like water bottles and potato chip bags. Once again, what could be a magnificently beautiful area is spoiled by...well, what? Laziness? Carelessness? No or ineffective waste disposal services? I don't know, so let's just call it humans.

No tours today, just lunch at the HRC with a much needed massage on the way back to the hostel, then hanging out by the pool with a book. This evening I'm off to the circus, which is an acrobatic show and should be pretty cool according to some folks who have already been. Tomorrow I'm back to Phnom Penh.

The Phare Circus last night was amazing. Poignant, breathtaking, funny...a wonderfully memorable but very short hour. They do international shows, so if you ever have a chance to see them, I high recommend you do so.

Uneventful day yesterday. Van ride was nicely air conditioned. My hostel, however, is not. I'm still in my upper bunk on the fourth floor and am sweating through my clothes. I guess I'll get moving, go downstairs and get some food.

TV and Air Con

Enough was enough. I was so hot that I checked out of the hostel and moved to a hotel room. So today, I'm staying cool inside a nice room and watching TV.

Thanks to my awesome friend Dano, this morning FedEx delivered an emergency care package with new glasses. My good pair broke and my backup pair were are scratched and bent, so these new ones and perfect. Thanks, Dano!

So much for my Saturday night plans with the Phnom Penh Hashers at their annual awards banquet. I'm sick with a bad cough and really sore throat. Robitussin and amoxicillin should clear it up in a couple of days. Really cool how you can get both of those from a pharmacist and don't have to go to a doctor.

Feeling like crap in Kampot

I took a 5-hour van ride at 0700 this morning to Kampot, a river town near the Cambodian coast. I didn't sleep very much last night because of the coughing, so I was out before we left Phnom Penh. I was able to sleep until we were about 6 miles from Kampot, and I only woke up because the road was no longer paved and was in terrible shape (potholes, mud, traffic).

I drug myself out of bed for yesterday's hash. I only walked but it was good and the people really cool, as usual. I'll see a few again in Nha Trang, Vietnam, in September.

Now, I've just finished setting up my cave (hanging towels around my bottom bunk to keep out shining light and prying eyes) and am at the bar with a beer and a book. I really don't feel like walking around, despite how small the town is, so I think I'll just stay in.

Today is a nope day. Nope, I'm not leaving the hostel unless it's on fire. Nope, I'm not getting out of bed except for the bathroom (down the hall) and food (downstairs). I booked an extra night here just so I could stay in. Feeling worse than yesterday, but I'm not alone. There must be a bug going around, all of us with chesty coughs and stuffy noses. I hate being sick. At least I don't have to go to work. 😀

One more day

I didn't sleep well, but I feel a bit better today and I believe the cough is sounding better. I'm still sticking to the hostel today. I may walk a few buildings down the street for a burrito this evening, but that will be the extent of my wanderings. Tomorrow, though, I'm back in the saddle with a motorbike around the area, mountains at my west and beaches at my southeast. I'm looking forward to getting it again.

Now that I have the room to myself, I'm cranking down the air con and taking a nap. 😀

P.S.: I'm posting this about 4 pm because I forgot to tell you. When I went downstairs yesterday, I found out that one of the local expats committed suicide the previous night.

A 27-year-old Finnish man hung himself at home. Two of his friends found him soon after (after an odd phone call or text, I think). Suicide is terrible for everyone; we all know this. However, it is particularly personal for survivors here.

According to the hostel owners, it costs about $4000 US to have authorities remove a corpse from a premises. That is over THREE TIMES the average ANNUAL national income.

Thus, when this young man's friends found him and they determined him dead (no official declaration needed for that here), it was up to them to move his remains to the local Pagoda. I don't know what happens after that, but I hear that he had a sister who has been notified.

Death is a very intimate and intrusive companion to people who make Cambodia their home. Their loss is almost palpable in the bar/restaurant downstairs. My heart aches for them.En savoir plus

Up and at 'em!

I'm back to the tourist bit today. I could've stayed in bed all day again--no, Mom, I never grew out of that--but forced myself up, got some breakfast, and hit the road on the motorbike around 9 am.

The first half of the day was down at Kep Beach. Yet again, what would've been a beautiful beach was ruined by trash both in the sand in the water. Sad.

Oh man! I had the best burrito last night from a place called Gringos Locos. They even had real sour cream!

Right now I'm having a black bean burger at Rikitikitavi. The restaurant/bar/guest house is run by Dom, an expat Aussie. One of the Hashers in Saigon is good friends with him and his family, so she recommended I stop in for food and tell him hi for her. Mission accomplished.

When I finish lunch, I'm off to the mountain. It's only 86°F and the humidity isn't too bad, but it's still nice to be on the bike and in the breeze during the heat of the day.

Another Day in Kampot

So, I've decided to spend the whole week here since I really didn't do anything the first couple of days I was here.

I've just dropped off almost all of my clothes at the laundry. At just less than 50¢ per pound, I should probably do it more often, but whatever. I went for a jog today, a real one with no beer. I still suck at it, but would've passed my AF PT test 😀. When I finish my lunch, I'm going upstairs in the air con to sort out my photos again. Or maybe read a book. Or take a nap. So many choices. 😂😂😂

Last night, I ran into fellow travelers from Siem Reap and we're supposed to meet up this evening. Althouh some of you may disagree, I'm not really an extrovert, but it does my soul well to see familiar faces now and again.

There's a huge difference between traveling alone, being alone, and being lonely. I absolutely love the first. Go or stay where and when you want with no one to discuss it or argue about it. As for the second, it's very rare to find yourself alone. If there's not someone at the next table or in the next bed, then there's always someone on social media. About the only time I can really be by myself is if I get a private hotel room and stay in it without letting in the cleaners, answering the phone, or picking up my smart phone. But the third, it occasionally rears its ugly head. That's when I usually send wet sloppy messages to my friends and family. The travelers I meet along the way, though, really keep the loneliness in check. So don't worry about me.

Kampot is growing on me

Well, I'm still in Kampot and will be here until Monday. I can't believe I'm staying in such crappy little place for so long, but it's kind of cool in its own way.

Last night, I went to a place upriver called the Banyan Tree, whose owner's band was playing. They were good, but somehow managed to make all their cover songs sound the same...Dire Straights, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin.

The nice things about being out at night are: 1) you don't have to look at all the trash; 2) it's much cooler; and 3) the water front is completely lit with neon.

I was planning on leaving tomorrow Sunday, but realized this morning that I booked my next room for Monday night. Oops. Oh well. Guess I'll have to stay for trivia night.

I have no intention of doing anything today. I'll go out this evening again probably. It's really nice to not be on a strict timeline.

I had soooo much fun last night. Two fellow guests at the hostel and I went on a river cruise. The water is very high, so when they say duck, they mean it. Lol. Then we took a tuktuk upriver to a bar/club and hung out with another fellow guest on the top of a river boat. Really nice.

I'm having lunch at Rikitikitavi again because the food is great. After this, I'm taking a nap. Because I can.

Heading to Otres Beach

I'm on my way to Otres Beach on the southwest coast. The video is the highway, the only highway. There is no sleeping on this ride. But it's only about two hours, so--provided I don't smash my head into the window and wind up with a concussion--I'll be fine.

I downloaded my last Air Force active duty pay stub (LES) yesterday. Money has been doing very well so far. Let's see what happens when I'm only getting about a third of my full pay. Oh, and thanks, Trump, for raising my taxes these past few months. Maybe with a pay cut, I'll see the long-promised reduction.

It's a small world after all

This is why I love wearing hash shirts when traveling. I arrived in Otres Beach, Cambodia, a place I've never been before. The very first bar I stopped at said there was a hasher bar down the street. Cool and amazing since there's no kennel here. I had some dinner, then made my way to that hotel/bar, which just happens to be next door to where I'm staying. 30 seconds after walking in, I'm hugging a hasher I met in Vientiane, Laos. LOVE IT!

No plans for today. I'm watching a movie right now and will get some lunch after. Boring but very nice.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I took a walk on the beach today and had quite a chuckle at the little shellfish in the surf and the little crabs filtering food from the sand, which winds up in tiny balls. I actually saw these crabs on an Animal Planet or NatGeoWild program about Thailand's islands. The larger ones I saw today are not even as big as my pinky toe nail. They looked a lot bigger on TV. 😉

After that, I had to find an ATM in the village. Yuck. This place is the grossest yet. Luckily, I didn't have to go very far for the ATM, and once complete, I immediately turned around and went back towards my hotel bungalow (picture). Now I'm having lunch at the hotel next door. Yummy.

I arranged a van to Phnom Penh for tomorrow morning, so I expect tomorrow's post will be from inside yet another van. 😀

Back to Phnom Penh

As predicted, I'm in a van heading back to Phnom Penh. About an hour ago, we drove past a massive palm oil farm. There must have been thousands of palm trees of which many of their trunks were covered in ferns. It was beautiful.

Last night I met up with my friend from Vientiane and his 19-year-old Cambodian "girlfriend" and the three of us went into the village to play pool. We didn't stay out long, but had a good time. He's coming to Phnom Penh tomorrow and is supposedly going to the hash on Sunday. I hope so. He's cool for a New Yorker 😉.

The first day of the rest of my life

As of 0001 San Antonio, Texas time, 1 September 2018, I am now officially retired from the United States Air Force at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant after serving for 26 years.

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,

Sunday is a hashing day!

Yay! I'm off for the hash with the awesome folks of the Phnom Penh kennel! Great to be back with them. Trail should be amazing today except the heat. Weather Underground says it's 95°F but feels like 108. Uughhh.

All I did yesterday to celebrate my first day of retirement was hang out at the pool with a few beers, some delicious Spag Bol, and a good book, the latter of which I finished this morning. Perfect!

Out and about

The Hash was terrific, despite a monsoon rolling in on us. We were soaked but laughing the whole time. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant. The Khmer ladies ordered for the table and the food turned out good, but raw, black, and fishy.

The raw shrimp platter consisted of a super spicy chili sauce with bitter gourd and garlic. Interesting, but waaaay too hot for me. The black chicken was frind and tasty...when you could find meat. The chickens here are the skinniest birds I have ever seen. I actually thought it was bat since they leave the feet on and it was literally pitch black. Not blackened, just black. The ladies assured the table that it was chicken, but even it wasn't, it tasted like chicken. The main course was a beautifully presented fish, which was very tasty. Even with drinks, the bill for seven people was only $42. Awesome!

I woke up around 4 am this morning, but around 7 I got back to sleep for a couple of hours. I'm out getting another mani/pedi, this time no paint. My nails grow so fast that the paint only looks good for about a week. I don't want to go that often, so no paint.

When I finish here, I'm off to Lone Star Saloon for their "famous" beef brisket and fried okra. Yummy!!! This evening, I'm going on a river cruise on the Mekong with some of the hashers. It's a charity event for a school with an open bar and buffet on the boat. Everyone wins!

P.S.: Again, wearing a hash shirt pays off. The guy running Lone Star is a hasher by the shortened name of Dooly. He started in the Solomon Islands. Yay! Oh, and the brisket is good, but not even close to Mom's!En savoir plus
