  • Ohio & Rain

    August 27, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 82 °F

It was great to ride through twisty West Virginia again. I was surprised and saddened by how much kudzu (pronounced KUHD-zoo) is taking over.

(More info on this terribly invasive plant:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kudzu_in_the_Un…)

At some point yesterday, I must have cut the corner of Virginia because I found myself facing a second "Welcome to West Virginia" sign near Charleston.

I spent the night in Dunbar/Charleston, West Virginia, and left this morning to very humid, overcast skies. The weather held out until I reached Athens, Ohio, when it began pouring. I'm sheltering in an Applebee's, but it looks like the sun is already coming back out. Wish me luck.

    Day 26 mileage: 304.1 (total 6380.8)

P.S.: If you're ever near Huntington, West Virginia, take time to see the gorgeous architecture. From a gold-crowned courthouse to brick streets to almost Gothic churches, downtown around Marshall University is stunning.

  • Back in West Virginia

    August 28, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

After being caught in the rain yesterday, and with wet roads and road spray keeping me from drying off, I decided to call it a day when I hit Clarksville, West Virginia. I found a Hilton, which does military discounts, next to a convenience store. I grabbed some beers, a sandwich, and some newspapers, then decided to stay a second night to let the storm go ahead if me. Plus, I'll get extra spa time for my sore hips. (Oh, the newspapers were to stuff in my waterproof boots that were wet from the rain running down my legs.)

I had a nice sleep in/lie in this morning with no alarm. I walked down to Walmart for food for the day and watched HBO most of the morning. Now I'm in the spa again. Aaaaaahhhhhhh.

  • Last HD in West Virginia

    August 29, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

I had a very nice down day yesterday with the afternoon spent watching HBO (no commercials!) and steak and shrimp for dinner. Yum!

Laura moved through last night. Lots of lightning and thunder, enough to wake me up.

I started this morning in rain gear because of road spray and dark skies. Good thing, too, because when I cut the corner of Pennsylvania between Morgantown and Tridelphia, I caught up to the remnants of Laura. Complete downpour for about half an hour. It was slow going all morning on roads that were wet, strewn with debris, twisty, and poorly surfaced. A stressful ride so far today. However, it looks like the storm may be moving away from me now. Fingers crossed.

I'm now at the last Harley dealership in West Virginia. That makes all of both WV and Kentucky 😀.

  • Back in Ohio

    August 30, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I hit some Pennsylvania dealerships and the Pittsburgh Hard Rock Cafe yesterday and stayed the night just outside of Youngstown, Ohio. The last 70 miles or so I jumped on the interstate to save some time. Man, it was windy! I kept it below 65, which is usually easy, but even that slow pummeled me. I had planned to go further, but I was beat.

This morning has me headed towards Cleveland, squiggling through to hit all the Harley dealerships. Now I'm at Denny's for lunch, which I can already tell I will regret.

  • New York At Last!

    August 31, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

I zigzagged all over Cleveland yesterday hitting Harley dealerships. Then I shot up to Erie, Pennsylvania, where I spent the night. Not a lot of miles, but all of it suburbia and city, so my clutch hand was ready to call it a day.

But before I hit the hotel, I swung by Presque Isle State Park to take a picture of Lake Erie. So beautiful.

This morning, I wound up in New York before I realized it. Again, back roads don't always have border signs; you just suddenly see a change in the street signs, particularly the state highway signs.

I wound up on part of the New York Amish Trail, which was evident by all the buggies and horse poo on the road 💩☹️. You can't always dodge it all, so I may have to wash the bike soon. It was neat to see the Amish homes, farms, and craft buildings. Lots of furniture making in the area. I know nothing of the religion--other than what they taught Harrison Ford in "Witness"--but I appreciate their ability to maintain a lifestyle of simplicity in a nation and world that focuses on material wealth.

I only hit two dealerships this morning, Jamestown and Buffalo (Buf pic tomorrow). After Jamestown, I hit a detour for a bridge out that put me on a gravel road for about 2.5 miles. Big rocks I tried to dodge and must have done well because I don't have a flat. A washboard ride the whole way, too. Ugh. No more of that, please, TomTom.

I'm now eating lunch at Athena's, a Greek family restaurant. Gyros meat with tzatziki sauce served with eggs and home fries. More of that, please, thank you!

  • Worst Headache Of My Life

    September 1, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Doc says it was either a migraine or a tension headache.

Back to yesterday. Not many miles today, but I made my intended destination of Niagara Falls where I'll stay two nights. I had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and met a lovely couple from Rochester, where I'm heading, who also ride. I called it an early evening, hit the hotel spa and pool, and had an early evening.

I woke up around 08:00, watched a bit of Netflix, then went down to the spa. But no! It was closed for cleaning. So, back to the room for a shower.

That's when the worst headache of my life hit me. There I was, just standing in the hot water, when WHAM! Ice pick through the top of my head. It almost put me on my knees. I managed to get out of the shower just to vomit in the commode. I made it to the bed with every intention of waiting it out, but after 10 minutes with no reprieve, I called the front desk for an ambulance. I'm no stranger to pain, and this was in the top five ever. By the time the EMTs showed up, it had not let up at all, and I was getting scared. I threw up again and could barely walk to the stretcher.

They took me to the nearest emergency room where I am now. Once I got into a bay, they hit me with a good dose of dilaudid, which took the pain from 10 to 5 and they put me on an IV for the nausea. Luckily, my CT scan came back all clear, so the doctor believes it was either a migraine or a tension headache. I'm fine, but no way I ever want to go through that again. Ugh.

  • On To Rochester

    September 2, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 77 °F

I left the ER around 16:00, picked up a prescription and some Chinese food, and got back to the hotel around 17:00, where I promptly ate my egg rolls, drank my water, and planted my noggin on the bed pillow, where I stayed the rest of the night.

I woke up feeling much better, but with a shadow of yesterday's headache still with me. Nonetheless, I packed up and rode out of the hotel at 09:30 under heavy, dark skies. I made it to the first Harley dealership without getting completely drenched, so fingers crossed I make it to my friends' before the nasty stuff rolls in from the north (and I'm headed due east).

  • ON ON in Rochester

    September 3, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

I made it to my friends' home in Rochester five minutes before the skies opened up. I had just unloaded and covered the bike when it hit, so I only got a little damp riding yesterday. In fact, I got wetter running from my buddy's car into the grocery store. I love my friends! I arrive and it's immediately, "Dump you're stuff and get in the car. We have to shop!" 🤣🤣

Off we went to the store, and another store, and another store, and finally arrived back at their home in time to start cooking. I prepped all the veggies, then meat sauce and pasta with garlic bread for six of us. What a wonderful meal with old and new friends!

I crashed early and hard and woke up with my head feeling much better. The three of us made breakfast (yummy again), then Jammin' "went" to work (telecommute). Robin Woody came over to get Messiah so they can lay trail for this evening's White Dress Run/Hash Wedding in celebration of Messiah' and Jammin's real wedding in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, I called the beer store to see the prices and flavors of the discount stuff for this weekend's hash campout. Yay!

Now, I'm going to take a nap.

  • Hash Wedding

    September 4, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

First, my group made the news background in Sturgis for an AntiFa rally. Now, my group has made the news background in Rochester for a BLM rally. What next?! 🤣

Look for our White Dress Wedding runners in the background at 1:57. 🤣🤣 Too funny!

No riding yesterday. Today, we loaded up on the drinks for the hash campout weekend, then I split off to go to the Harley dealership. I stumbled across the Cycle Stop by the beer store, but it's not a true dealership. Had to take a pic, though. 😀

  • Another Headache

    September 8, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

I had another headache last night, so I stayed an additional night in Pennsylvania, near the Penn State University Nittany Lions. Turns out, Nittany is the county.

Coming south from the campground, I rode through the Susquehannock and Sproul State Parks. Beautiful and well-surfaced twisty roads for.anout 40 miles. Awesome!

  • On My Way Back To Ohio

    September 8, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

I stayed in the room yesterday, ordering very tasty perogies, pizza, and salad from a local shop.

I had leftovers for breakfast and left the hotel a bit before 08:00. It wasn't quite 60°F, so I was very bundled up. Luckily, the headache seems to have subsided.

Now, I'm just outside Pittsburgh and have stripped the cold weather gear down to just jeans, long-sleeved shirt, chaps, and jacket. It's about to hit 80°F, so I should be good for the rest of the day. Perfectly blue skies have accompanied me the entire morning.

  • Rear Tire

    September 10, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

Yesterday evening I met up with one of the guys who used to work for me, both in Germany and then in Ohio. It was really great to see him again.

Today, I'm getting a rear tire put on the bike by the same dealership I bought it from, Buckeye Harley Davidson. I'll have to replace the front tire at the 15,000 service. Fingers crossed it lasts until I get back to Texas.

  • Indiana

    September 14, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Yesterday's late lunch with my friend and his family was really nice. I was back to the hotel early.

I woke up this morning feeling very lonely. I suppose it was a combination of seeing then leaving my friends and talking to Mom, which reminded me I can no longer talk to Dad. Being back in the bike is helping.

I left the hotel around 09:30 and the first time on the iPod was Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle Again." Very appropriate.

I'm now somewhere in the middle of soy and corn fields in Indiana. I decided to head west instead of south to avoid Hurricane (Tropical Storm?) Sally. It's been a very nice, sunny, and cool day so far.

No, actually, best of all was seeing old friends and making new ones. Sturgis with the Powder Keg HOG buddies, a wedding with the Rochester Hash House Harriers, and an epic journey across a huge swathe of the US meeting people along the way. Life is good.
