    Day 1!

    August 1, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Matthew McConaughey (Texan) perfectly summed up today's ride so far: "Alright alright alright!"

I'm on my way to Sturgis!! I hit the road today at about 08:30 and am now stopped for lunch in Atoka, Oklahoma.

What a gorgeous day on which to start another journey! Blue skies with puffy white clouds, a lovely 75°F/23°C, and a cooler breeze. Perfect!

I'll post again tomorrow with another noon selfie. 😀

Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

  • Day 2

    Kansas is windy!

    August 2, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

After lunch yesterday, I was driving through the Oklahoma town of Coalgate. I turned around to take a picture of the courthouse's veterans memorial. Well, that's what I thought it was. Believe it or not--and you have to believe it because I have a picture--it was the Ten Commandments from the Bible. Whoa.

Later, I hit two Harley dealerships in Tulsa and one in my overnight location of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

I got to the hotel around 18:00 and had a very nice swim, shower, and meal before crashing around 21:00. That was far too early, as it turned out. I woke up at 01:00 wide awake. I dozed off around 04:30 until my alarm at 06:00. Bad start to today.

Before I left the hotel at just before 07:30, I took pictures of two of the art buffalo or whatever they're called. I have no idea how many are there, but I saw about five. They reminded me of the fancy goldfish that is used in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where I lived for a while.

Today was another gorgeous day with clear blue skies! It was only around 60°F/15°C when I started out, so it wasn't long before I had to stop and put on another shirt. Wow!

I skipped breakfast, so I stopped for food about 10:00. I found a great place called Little Firehouse Cafe in Derby, Kansas. A packed house it was and rightly so because the breakfast burrito I had was humongous and delicious.

After brunch, I made it to the Harley dealership in Park City, Kansas. I missed the border, but there aren't always goodbye/hello signs on smaller roads. I just happened to notice that the highway numbers changed and that I started leaning sideways against the wind. Kansas is windy!

Right now, I'm on the side of Interstate 195 because I can't get my GPS to reroute me off this 75 mile per hour nightmare. This part of the interstate is also a US highway (81?), so the TomTom thinks it's okay.

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

    Day 1 mileage: 378.5 (total 378.5)

P.S.: I didn't type all of this on the side of the highway.

  • Day 3

    Nebraska...

    August 3, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 57 °F

Not much to mention after yesterday's post. I figured out how to work the GPS to keep me off the interstate. But I wound up on gravel. 🤦 It wasn't bad, though, and only about five miles long.

I stopped at a historical marker in Kansas to stretch my tokus and drink some water. A kid, maybe 12, rode up on a four-wheeler to chat for a minute. Nice kid AND he was wearing a helmet (state law but still). He also thought it was a great day to ride.

I stayed in Grand Island, Nebraska, last night, arriving the hotel around 19:00 after swinging by the Harley dealership. I crashed hard after a lovely meal at the Mexican restaurant across the street.

I was up at 06:00 and on the road by 07:00. Hit two more Harley dealerships with a photo stop at Glur's Tavern in Columbus, Nebraska, supposedly the oldest tavern in the state of not "The West" (on the sign). I swung through the Lincoln Historic Haymarket District and pulled the bike on the sidewalk across from the State Capitol to grab a quick photo.

At 11:30, I hit 5,000 miles on the bike. I have to stop somewhere to get the service done.

Today's noon selfie is on Church Street at the church.

    What I've learned today:
    1) Nebraska has a lot of corn; 2) Nebraska has a lot of roads that the GPS thinks are paved; and 3) Nebraska has so many butterflies that I feel like a serial killer.

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

    5,000-mile service in Iowa

    August 4, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

After lunch yesterday, I continued east toward another Harley dealership that turned out to be in Iowa. I crossed the border on a beautiful old bridge, but didn't realize I was in Iowa until I came back across the Missouri River toward Offut Air Force Base and saw the Welcome to Nebraska sign. On base, I met up with my sorely missed buddy from Thailand/Malaysia. It was a short visit because he was at work, but worth every second.

After that, I stopped for a late lunch at Sickies Garage. Great burgers! But enough traffic for me to want out of the city. I had two separate idiots turn left in front of me so close that I was thankful for antilock brakes (don't tell Mom).

Two more Harley dealerships later and a quick stop to take a picture of the Swedish Heritage Center and historical marker, I pulled into Sioux City, Iowa, at 18:00. I was definitely ready to be off the bike.

My hotel hasn't opened its pool, so a hot shower then out to the Hard Rock Casino and Hotel. I don't gamble, but they have a Rock Shop with pins, so I had to go. It was nice to walk around a bit.

Back to hotel for another hard sleep.

I was up at 08:00 to take my bike to Rooster's Harley-Davidson for its 5,000-mile service (only 200 miles past due). It only took an hour and a half to get it back. No issues, but it looks like I'll only get 10,000 miles on the tires. I was hoping for 15,000.

I thought it would take the dealership at least until after lunch, and I didn't want to start another leg so late in the day, so I booked a second night at my hotel in downtown.

Now, I'm at Chili's for lunch.

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

  • Day 5

    South Dakota!

    August 5, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

I took advantage of a full day in Sioux City to get a haircut and walk around downtown. The Woodbury County Courthouse was very impressive. Opened in 1918, it is now a National Historical Landmark for its Prairie School architecture (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodbury_County…).

I went back to the Hard Rock to try my luck at Craps and lost $40. I played for a while though, and it was interesting relearning how to bet. I haven't played for over 10 years. There were two guys playing with several thousand dollars. Not for me. So, back to the room for the rest of my pizza and couple of movies.

I had a nice omelette at IHOP this morning and hit the road at 08:45. I wound my way north in Iowa for an hour before crossing into South Dakota.

The Sioux Falls dealership had a sign set up and when I pulled in front of it, a nice woman rider took my photo.

Not much else to say about the ride today except that I feel very alone in these roads, which is fine by me. I haven't caught or been caught by any cars going my way and have only seen a handful traveling the other direction. Fantastic.

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

  • Day 6

    80-mile detour

    August 6, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Yesterday afternoon, I made it to two more dealerships before checking into the hotel. Aaah. Hot tub and pool. Just what I needed. I'm spending far too much on hotels, but I'm camping for the next two weeks on a sleeping pad with one inch of air between me and the ground, so yes, worth it.

Did I tell you that I have seen deer every day so far, a lot of them and many of them very close up? I have seen so many that the hotel last night gave me a room with a deer caution road sign printed next to the room number. Seriously! I forgot to take a picture, but every room had some sort of roadside picture: trees, lakes, bridges...but I had the deer sign. Of course I did.

Back to yesterday, though. It was cloudy skies all day, but I didn't hit any rain until the last couple of hours. Just sprinkles, but enough for me to put on the rain jacket, which means I didn't need it after all. (If you ride, you know.)

But despite the overcast, I saw magnificent wildlife...and yes, deer. I didn't know South Dakota had so many lakes/ponds, so the bird life is incredible. Storks (look like pelicans but fresh water?), cormorants (I think), hawks, doves, ducks, quail, and geese. I even saw a little chipmunk standing up and munching on something on the verge. What were the cartoon ones called? Anyway, it's wonderful to see so much life, even when you pass the dead skunks. I try to hold my breath when I see those coming, but it's usually too late.

After a false fire alarm at 01:30 that kept me awake for those next couple of hours, I left the hotel at 08:30 this morning in 55°F/12°C (WTF?!) weather. At 09:00 I hit clouds sitting on the ground. Fog...30 miles of very cold, very wet fog. And on a partially graveled road. Behind a semi truck. I stopped early on to put on my rain jacket, but waited to put on the rain gloves. Of course, my gloves didn't even get wet.

Today's noon selfie was just past a little town called McLaughlin, which is my sister-in-law's maiden name. Hi, Katie!!! But the reason I am here is because almost every Reservation is closed to out-of-state vehicles. Fifteen miles in, I hit a road block. After they took my name and license plate number, I was refused entry. I backtracked those 15 miles to head north for 25 miles where I am now. I'll head back west then south for another 25 miles to get back on my route. 80 miles added to the trip today. Yuck.

Better news! The other picture attached is my RV storage building that is coming along beautifully!

I'll be in Sturgis this evening!

    Welcome to Sturgis!

    August 7, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Yesterday...saw one buffalo...was stung on the wrist by a dead bee...bee guts feel sticky and taste sweet...met my campground neighbors...watched the storm roll in at dusk...contributed to the bar girls' college fund (tip jar)...and had an amazing first evening at Sturgis!

Today I figured how to make the pay shower work. Right now I'm waiting to take my first ride in the area with my neighbors. It's a gorgeous 82°F, sunny and warm!

    Devil's Tower

    August 7, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Yesterday, I rode through Alladin and stopped briefly at the General Store and Bar. The Store had loads of meat products, bullets, and antiques (mostly junk to me), while the tiny bar had this amazing old safe. Then it was on to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I didn't stop for long though, just roadside to take some pics...which are on my 📷.

A storm was rolling in, so I jumped in I-90 and beelined it back to camp. Just in time, too.

After I cleaned up, I walked into town and spent the evening with a lovely group of people at a karaoke bar. What a blast!!

I left camp at 09:00 heading for Custer State Park. I hit a couple of Harley dealerships on the way, and I'm now stopped for lunch at the park's lake.

The scenery and roads are amazingly beautiful. I rode The Needles today, a super twisty road leading to the park, sort of. It was great fun when I could get clear of car and bike traffic. I hope the rest of the day is great as this morning.

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️

    Mount Rushmore

    August 9, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

After my lunch stop at the lake, I continued through Custer State Park. I saw three separate herds of buffalo--so cool--and a group of very friendly donkeys that wanted the bikers to pet them. I have no idea what that was about.

Outside of the park, I rode Iron Mountain Road, an awesome twisty turny path through the hills facing Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore itself was pretty cool.

Today, I met up with a friend from Germany who is now stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. It's so nice to see old friends again! (And I hit two more Harley dealerships.)

    Dead Man's Hand (Aces & 8s)

    August 10, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

I spent yesterday afternoon hanging out in Sturgis, listening to bands, and chatting with some amazing people. I've been invited to Las Vegas and Utah lol.

This morning I'm hanging out in Deadwood, most famous for the origin of the dead man's hand of poker, aces and eights. Will Bill Hickok was holding those cards when he was shot and killed here.

Tom Berenger is here to lead the Legends Ride. Oh my, he is still very sexy.

I'm getting some lunch now. Pulled pork on a bed of mac and cheese. There aren't a lot of green food options here. Shocking, I know. 🤣

That's all for now. Don't forget to be awesome! ✌️
