Our morning started with an unexpected wake-up call. A parking officer tapping firmly on our window, giving us a warning for overnighting in a Cairns parking lot. After a quick laugh and a stretch, we headed straight for the harbour, ready for a day at Green Island.

A breezy ferry ride later, we arrived at the island’s inviting shores. Snorkelling alongside gentle sea turtles was a peaceful highlight, even if the reef wasn’t the most vibrant we'd seen. It was a simple reminder that beauty often lies in these quieter moments.

We kicked off our day at Airlie Beach with ZigZag Tours, ready for another adventure. The morning started with snorkeling at the coral reef, swimming alongside colorful fish and vibrant corals, followed by a relaxed lunch onboard with ocean views all around.

In the afternoon, we arrived at the famous Whitehaven Beach, spending some chilled-out time on its incredibly soft, white sands before hiking up to a lookout. Although the views were beautiful, we felt a bit let down by the tour, as we didn't get to visit the iconic lookout overlooking the stunning swirling sands and turquoise waters Whitehaven is famous for. Still, it was hard not to appreciate the natural beauty of this remarkable place.

  • Calliope River Rest Area

    7. juli 2025, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We spent the night at a rest area worth mentioning. Free, tucked away from the highway, and surprisingly peaceful despite the traffic nearby. Waking up there felt like being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by birdsong and the rustle of wildlife in the trees. A word of caution, though: this close to the coast, crocodiles aren’t far off, so keeping an eye out is part of the adventure.Læs mere

We spent the day exploring K’Gari Island, and it easily became one of the highlights of the trip. Our first stop was Lake McKenzie, with its unbelievably clear water and powdery white sand perfect for a refreshing swim. From there, we wandered through the rainforest at Central Station, once home to the island’s old timber industry, before heading to the coastline to see the famous shipwreck lying dramatically on the beach.

Along the way, we spotted whales migrating offshore and even caught glimpses of wild dingoes roaming freely. The mix of pristine nature, wildlife, and history made the day unforgettable. We loved every moment of it.

  • Whale watching at Sunshine Coast

    9. juli 2025, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After our K’Gari trip, we went on a short whale-watching tour, just a couple of hours out at sea. At first, we weren’t too impressed. The whales were far in the distance, barely breaking the surface. But things quickly turned around when one of them started breaching over and over, right near the boat.

For nearly twenty jumps, it put on an incredible show, and I managed to capture some amazing shots. What started off as underwhelming ended up being one of the most memorable moments of the trip.

  • Brisbane

    10. juli 2025, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Brisbane turned out to be a pleasant surprise: quiet, green, and so far my favorite city in Australia. I’m not sure I’d say the same in the middle of summer, but in this season it felt just right.

We spent the morning walking through the Botanical Gardens and wandered over to Kangaroo Point for views of the river and skyline. For lunch, we stopped at The Prawnster, a family-run spot where you sit on a boat and eat fresh local prawns straight from the source a true local treat.

By evening, it was time to say goodbye to the east coast as we caught a flight to Perth, ready to kick off the next chapter of our month-long trip.
