    Evening sun

    June 18, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a good flight with Air Mauritius, we've made it to Merville Beach Hotel in Grand Baie - our home for the next fortnight.
The rooms are spacious and it's a one minute walk to the beach, restaurant and pool - lovely.
The girls enjoyed their first cocktail before going to Yoga. Adam and I played dominoes whilst drinking a beer and then returned to the beach to watch the sun go down.🍹🍻

SUP & Glass bottom boat day

    June 19, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

After dealing with my stolen credit card, Emma showed us her new water-based skill developed in Bournemouth before we all set out in the glass bottom boat to see the coral and a variety of fish. As usual, I felt sick from about 10 mins into the 45 min trip!
Once ashore I walked the length of the bay to get my land legs back.
Taught Adam and Emma how to play crib during pre dinner drinks .

    An activity day

    June 20, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We cycled to Cap Malheureux in the morning and visited some lovely beaches. Then before lunch, Adam and I went out on a pedalo. After lunch, Emma and I each took a Stand-Up Paddleboard out to sea - wondered if I'd drift to Africa but managed to turn it round eventually! Tonight's entertainment is Bollywood but I feel I've done enough activities for one day 😁.Read more

    Into town for tour negotiations

    June 21, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After a breakfast by the pool we took a stroll into Grand Baie and arranged the underwater walk for Emma and Adam plus the day tour to see the sights of Mauritius.
Then we returned to Merville Beach where I gave my new snorkel mask an outing. Adam and I then played with the water ball before he set off for a couple of laps of water skiing. I took afternoon tea with Allison and Emma before watching the sunset.Read more

    An underwater sea walk

    June 22, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After a leisurely start, we walked to a local beach where Adam and Emma caught the transfer boat to the Underwater Sea Walk platform. After donning their breathing helmets they walked amongst the coral and were visited by several fish. Viewing fish was the main activity of the day as Adam and I both saw a variety of fish during our afternoon snorkel. Another lovely sunset to end another great day.Read more

    Out and about

    June 23, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today we took a day long tour visiting a volcanic crater (Trout aux Cerfs), the island's largest natural reservoir, the Shiva statue at the Grand Bassin, Alexandra waterfalls at the Black River Gorge (where we also came across a troop of Macaque monkeys), Chamarel's waterfall and seven coloured earth, and following a view of Morne Brabant and I'ile aux Benitiers in the south west corner we finished the day in the Botanical Gardens (Pamplemousses). We were happy to drive past the sugar plantation and rum distilleries having visited those during our Caribbean trips!Read more

Thank goodness for the Tune in radio app

    June 24, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A day of lounging today, listening to the Indian Ocean lap against the Sandy beach whilst peering out between the palm trees from the comfort of the sun lounger.
That lasted all of 5 minutes for me, then I found coverage of the British Lions v New Zealand rugby test match on the Tune in radio app on my phone which was great, apart from the loss!
Snorkelling straight off the beach was my afternoon activity and I was able to spot about 6 different species of fish in amongst the coral.
Tonight, after dinner we have a Cultural show to watch - if it's as good as the other entertainment we've had all week, we should be in for a good show!

Sunday - a day of rest?

    June 25, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A glorious day spent relaxing on the beach for the majority of the time. We did take the snorkel trip out beyond the reef and saw lots of different fish. Allison and Emma took out a pedalo and then Allison and I took a mid-afternoon stroll around the bay for yet more exercise!
As always, Chandan and Arden from the bar looked after us throughout the day and it's nice they remember our names given the number of guests in the hotel. DJ Dave entertained us during the evening and it reminded us of the Raymen's and such a shame they were unable to join us.

Confirmed - you can do nothing all day!

    June 26, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Inbetween meals I sat on the beach and finished Emma's book I started yesterday. Emma and I had 15 minutes in the sea with the water ball, Allison went for a cool down dip in the sea twice and Adam had a 15 minute snorkel - other than that we sat under our beach umbrella all day long just chilling and watching the world go by. I did get up to take some sunset photos but that was about it for today 😎Read more

    Life as a local

    June 27, 2017 in Mauritius ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Allison and I spent an hour drifting round the bay on a pedalo in the morning then after lunch we decided to go to the capital, Port Louis on the local bus.
It's a bustling city with a mix of modern and old, rich and poor. There are swanky shopping malls near the waterfront and just 500 yards inland, there are street traders selling fruit from barrows etc.Read more
