Buraco das Araras (Macaw pit) is one of the largest sinkholes in the world, where dozens of macaws nest and soar through the sky. This massive hole has also become a safe and secure home for many other birds.

So far there are 157 species registered in the park, so we were guaranteed a bird spotting smorgasbord.Read more

Rio Da Prata Snorkelling - To get to the headspring of Olho D'água (Water Eye) river, where the tours began, we travelled by open jeep to the Private Natural Heritage Reserve. The journey started with a pleasant walk through the riparian forest of Prata River.

Upon reaching the springhead – a huge natural pool of crystal clear water – there was training to adapt to our mask and snorkel. While floating down the river, there were dozens of species of fish and aquatic plants.Read more

Early in the morning, we boarded the Motor Yacht Tucano and departed upstream on the Rio Negro. Throughout the morning, we cruised through the world’s largest river island system, the Anavilhanas Archipelago.

By mid afternoon, the vessel had gone beyond Manaus and entered a wilderness area. Both shores were covered by dense rainforest. In the late afternoon, we embarked on the launches and set out to search for wildlife.Read more

Early in the morning, we explored the rainforest along the water’s edge in our launch. After breakfast, we took our first bush walk in the forest, gaining a good introduction to Amazon ecology.

Around midday, we returned for lunch, and the vessel continued cruising up the Rio Negro.

In the late afternoon, we once again explored the forest in our launch and listened to the sunset chorus of birds. Later that night, we embarked on a nocturnal excursion in our launch.Read more

Our day kicked off with an early venture into the lively forest. As we meandered through the awakening habitat, we remained vigilant for Toucans and Macaws. We headed back for a hearty breakfast before setting off on our forest walk.

By midday, the vessel pressed onward, carving its path further up the Rio Negro. In the late afternoon, some of us took a refreshing dip in the river before setting off on an excursion that led us to an unforgettable encounter -a playful family of Giant Otters, gliding effortlessly through the water, their curious eyes peering up at us. On our night excursion, we spotted our first sloth.Read more

Following our morning expeditions, we cruised along the densely forested shoreline, soaking in the sights and sounds of the jungle. We were treated to an incredible visit from pink river dolphins, their playful splashes breaking the water’s glassy surface.

In the afternoon, we set out to fish for piranhas, which were later prepared for dinner. Osmar delighted us with an array of local delicacies, offering us a true taste of the Amazon.

Wildlife on our a nocturnal excursion, was scare as it was very wet.Read more

Our early morning excursion took us into a side river where the vessel is typically moored overnight. Since we were visiting during the dry season, the water levels were unusually low, revealing parts of the river bed rarely seen.

Sadly, we embarked on our final forest walk, venturing into the jungle one last time, savouring every sound and sight. But our adventure wasn’t over yet - our final nocturnal excursion did not disappoint, offering us one last glimpse of the Amazon’s hidden wonders.Read more

Our day began with a visit to a local village, offering us a glimpse into the lives of the people who call the Amazon home. Afterward, we began our journey back to Manaus, arriving by late afternoon at the Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Waters) - a dramatic, several mile long divide where two of the world’s largest rivers — the muddy Amazon and the inky black Rio Negro collide in a mesmerizing, turbulent maelstrom.

Here, the dark, tea-colored waters of the Rio Negro flow side by side with the milky-brown currents of the Amazon, refusing to mix for miles, creating one of nature’s most stunning spectacles.Read more

On our way back from the Meeting of the Waters, we visited Lake Janauari Ecological Park, where traditional dancers treated us to a lively performance.

At sunset, the MV Tucano once again turned her bows upstream on the Rio Negro, making her way to our overnight anchorage north of Manaus. As we passed in front of the city, we marvelled at the scale of one of the world’s largest and most vibrant port cities — standing over a thousand miles from the sea.

That night, before our farewell dinner, we gathered on the deck, sipping Osmar’s signature Caipirinhas, as we reminisced about our unforgettable journey through the Amazon. Aside from the occasional barge and local fishing boat, our vessel drifted alone on the vast, silent waters of the Rio Negro.

Early the next morning, we disembarked and spent the day at our accommodation, awaiting our 2:20 am flight to Iguassu Falls—the next chapter of our adventure.Read more

After an overnight flight from Manaus, we arrived at Iguazu Falls around 10am. Thankfully, we were able to check into our hotel before midday.

After enjoying lunch by the pool, we set off for a 10-minute panoramic helicopter flight over both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides of the falls. The clear, sunny afternoon provided absolutely perfect conditions for seeing the falls. There were five of us on the flight and Murray was lucky enough to snag the front seat next to the pilot.Read more

Iguazu Falls (Argentinian Side)

Iguazu Falls straddles the Argentinia-Brazil border and consists of 275 individual waterfalls cascading across a 2.7 km wide horseshoe-shaped gorge. The falls are formed where the Iguazu River plunges dramatically over the edge of the Paraná Plateau. On the Argentinian side, a network of walkways allows you to get up close to the roaring water.

Our day began with an early morning pick-up to beat the crowds and catch the first train to the Devil’s Throat. The initial walkway led us to a balcony with the most spectacular view of Devil’s Gorge. Following this, we explored the upper and lower walkways, each offering unique perspectives of this breathtaking natural wonder.Read more

The Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls gives sweeping panoramic views of the falls and has a single circuit, which takes approximately two hours to complete.

We arrived in Rio de Janeiro after a late night flight from Iguassu Falls.

The next morning, we embarked on a walking tour of Santa Teresa and Lapa. Boarding a charming yellow tram, we enjoyed a scenic 20 minute ride over the historic aqueducts to Santa Teresa.

Alighting at Largo dos Guimarães, we wandered through the cobblestone streets of one of Rio's oldest suburbs before ascending into the hilltop neighborhoods, where our guide pointed out hidden gems and breathtaking vantage points overlooking downtown Rio and Guanabara Bay.

Once a neighborhood of the elite, Santa Teresa has transformed into a thriving artistic hub, drawing painters, sculptors, and musicians who now call it home.Read more

Our tour began with a scenic drive from Copacabana Beach to Corcovado Hill (704m), home to Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic landmark - Christ the Redeemer. Standing beneath this towering statue, recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, we took in breathtaking panoramic views of Rio’s coastline, mountains, and cityscape.

From there, we continued to the Urca district and the world-famous Sugarloaf Mountain. Boarding the first cable car, we ascended to Urca Hill (215m), which offered spectacular views of Guanabara Bay. A second cable car took us to the summit of Sugarloaf (395m), where we soaked in stunning 360 degree views of Rio, its beaches, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Next, we visited the Saint Benedict Monastery, perched atop São Bento Hill in the city center. As we passed through Rio’s historic downtown, we stopped at the Metropolitan Cathedral, an architectural marvel, before continuing to the Selarón Steps - a vibrant urban masterpiece created by the late Jorge Selarón.Read more
