    Nafplio

    From Nafplio, we explored some of the highlights of the Peloponnese. We visited Epidaurus, the ancient healing sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius. Its famous theatre, built in the 4th century BCE, is known for its incredible acoustics (you can hear a coin drop from the top row) 🎭. Travelling in low season paid off: at one point, we had the entire theatre to ourselves.

    We also wanted to visit Mycenae, but Greece recently more than doubled all archaeological site prices, so we admired it from the outside instead 😅. As an alternative, we climbed Larissa castle near Argos.

    The rest of our days were filled with coffees, games, and Greek aperitifs in town. After saying goodbye 😢 to Maarten and Laura, we crawled back into Otto (conveniently parked next to a climbing wall)! 🧗‍♂️🚐    Meer informatie

    Methana & Pelei

    This fairly unknown volcanic peninsula is connected to the Peloponnese by a small isthmus 🌋. It’s part of the same volcanic arc as Santorini, and more than 30 craters and lava domes have shaped its rugged landscape. The last major eruption happened in the 3rd century BCE and you can still walk over old lava fields today.

    The whole place feels quite special: tiny villages tucked between strange volcanic formations, smelly natural thermal baths bubbling with mineral water, and wide views over the Saronic Gulf 🌊. We spent our last nights wild camping here.

    To round off our months in Greece, we moved to a small mountain house surrounded by olive trees 🌿. Peaceful mornings in the sun and slow evenings by the fire, a perfect goodbye 💛.    Meer informatie

    After a stormy crossing from Greece to Italy, we arrived in Bari. We got a Belgian-style welcome: 8°C and nonstop rain 🌧️. Good preparation for going home, we guess!

    We rented a small apartment in Ostuni and used it as our base to explore the Puglia region. The trulli of Alberobello (traditional cone-shaped stone houses built without mortar by farmers) were especially cool to wander around. We also strolled through the cosy streets of Locorotondo, Cisternino, Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, once again confirming that Italy definitely has the most charming old towns 🏘️!

    Lecce, however, was a bit of a miss. Visiting on a Monday afternoon in December meant everything was closed. The joys of travelling in low season 🐵.    Meer informatie

    Pugliese culture

    Puglia has a culture that feels very alive, not just in its whitewashed towns and cute trulli houses, but in everyday life too. Think farm-to-table everything (olive oil, seafood, handmade pasta), colourful traditions, and craftsmanship that goes way back to the Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines 🍝.

    We noticed that everything here is small. Tiny cars squeezing through tinier streets, espressos you finish in one sip, pocket-sized shops you can't enter wearing a backpack, and houses that aren't much bigger than Otto. But this only added to the authentic charm of Puglia!    Meer informatie

    Matera

    On our way from Ostuni to Napoli, we stopped in Matera, the third oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Its highlight are the Sassi, neighbourhoods of cave homes carved into the limestone.

    Matera was one of the poorest places in Italy until the 1950s, with whole families living in these caves in very basic conditions.
    Today, many sassi have been restored into cafés, museums and small hotels. The city is surrounded by a landscape of beautiful canyons that make the whole area feel quite peaceful. Or is that the low season again?    Meer informatie

    Amalfi Coast

    This scenic stretch runs from Sorrento to Salerno. It’s famously packed in high season and even in mid-December there were still plenty of people! But honestly, we get the hype: the coastline is very beautiful 🌊.

    We started in Ravello, perched 365 meters above the sea and serving up some of the best panoramas on the whole coast.

    The villages here are linked by narrow trails and countless staircases. We walked the trail between Minori and Maiori, Il Sentiero dei Limoni, winding through lemon orchards destined for very delicious limoncello 🍋.

    Our second hike was the famous Il Sentiero degli Dei, a panoramic path high above the sea that links Bomerano to Positano. After reaching beautiful, but posh (and expensive!) Positano, we cruised back to Amalfi by boat, tasted some local treats, and left with a fresh stock of limoncello.    Meer informatie

    Vesuvius, Pompeii & Herculaneum

    The Vesuvius towers over the whole Bay of Naples, so of course we had to see it from up close. This volcano has erupted countless times and is still considered one of the most dangerous in the world because millions of people live right around it. Its most famous eruption happened in 79 AD, when a massive explosion buried entire cities under ash and pumice🌋 .

    We visited two cities still remarkably well preserved thanks to those volcanic layers. We started in Pompeii, which is enormous and incredibly impressive. Streets, villas, baths, frescoes… you really get the feeling of walking through a ancient city (if you ignore the thousands of other tourists doing the exact same thing). Herculaneum was much quieter and felt more intimate. Many houses still have upper floors and wooden elements 🏠.

    We did both sites on the same day, thanks to the first-Sunday-of-the-month free entry (and made a video of each for the history buffs 🤓). In between, we fuelled up with a delicious Neapolitan pizza🍕.    Meer informatie

    Napels

    Naples was the last stop of our trip 🥲. Often named one of the world’s best food cities, we spent the day snacking our way through town 🍕.

    Since we only visited on a day trip by train, time was limited. Still, we really liked the parts we explored, especially the colourful houses along the lungomare and the lively Quartieri Spagnoli with countless murals of local deity Maradona ⚽️.

    We wrapped up the day at a Sorbillo pizzeria, a historic family-run spot founded in 1935 and considered one of the best places in the city for classic Neapolitan pizza.    Meer informatie
