    Duwisib Castle

    After unpacking we walked to the castle and had a look around. The castle was built in 1909 by an ex German soldier and they also brought 6000 hectares of land to start farming.
    They imported the breeding cows from England and the horses from Austria and the sheep from the northern cape.
    The horses were sought after by Namibian farmers and in 1914 the couple left Namibia to go to England to buy Colts but en route WW1 broke out and their ship was diverted to Rio De Janeiro. Here they were held in detention as Germans but the colonel managed to buy their way onto a neutral ship and they went to Germany.
    Back in Germany the ex colonel wanted to help the war effort and re- enlisted but 2 weeks later he was killed in the battle of the Somme.    Leer más

    Duwisib Guest Farm & Camping

    We left Klein Aus Vista at 8:40am and initially the sat nav said it was 4 hours but we had only allowed for 3.
    As it turns out it was gravel all the way and we did it in 2 hours but it was like driving in marbles.
    En route there was nothing but baron landscape. I have to admit I’m not really getting the attraction to Namibia. There’s just hundreds and hundreds of miles of nothingness. Most of the time there’s not even a rolling landscape, just flat scenery.
    We got to our next camp at 10:30am and checked in.
    This is the Duwisib Guest farm and we are staying here 2 nights. There is an old German castle next door that the original owners built in 1909 but it now belongs to the Namibia Parks.    Leer más

    Kolmanskop Ghost Town

    .The wind got up overnight and the temperature plummeted. We had our normal quilt, then a double duvet and then a fleece blanket. To top it off we were also wearing our thermals and we weren’t hot. It was bitterly cold when we came out to make coffee at 5:30am.
    We left the camp at 6:30am because yesterday the sat nav said it was a 2.5 hour drive. This morning it said it was just over an hour so we got to Kolmanskop stupid early but at 8am when they let us in we had the place to ourselves.
    Kolmanskop was a diamond mining town in the early 1920’s that shot up but only lasted about 4 months until all the diamonds were mined. There were so many they were just laying in the sand.
    When the town closed down it took years for anyone to be allowed inside it incase there were still diamonds left.
    The town had a school, a huge hospital, a butchers and bakery and even an ice making factory. This has been on my explore list for a long time and I’m glad we ticked it off.    Leer más

    Klein Aus Vista Camp

    After leaving Keetmanshoop it was another 240km and 2.5 hour drive to our next campsite. There was nothing but totally baron landscape inbetween with huge swathes of long straight roads that were just boring.
    There were fields and fields of tiny yellow flowers and these are called John Deere flowers as they are the same colours as the tractors. They only come into massive blooms after significant rainfall and the last time there was this many was 2011 só we are lucky to see so many.
    We arrived at our campsite at 3pm, checked in and then drove to campsite 7.
    It’s not very private because it is just a vast expanse but they have done their best to screen of views of the neighbours and the South Africans are very polite. Tourists are different though. Most just blank us when we wave, smile or say hello.
    The campsite is beautiful. We are surrounded by rocks and there are trails going off into the hills. After going for a run we watched the rocks turn bright orange at sunset before turning back to a dull stone colour as the golden light disappeared.    Leer más

    Keetmanshoop Shopping

    Our first real stop of the day was Keetmanshoop. It’s 30km in the opposite direction but they have all the shops here that we could want and decided to stick up in fresh produce. We also found some amazing coffee and brought it and that led to us to the Keetmanshoop Mall to look for a coffee maker.
    Once we had that it was time for lunch at the hungry lion which funnily enough only sold chicken burgers……    Leer más

    Halfway to Keetmanshoop

    We are heading to the next town 100 miles away and halfway there we found an abandoned train station and a building that looked like an old windmill.
    This is not in fact a windmill but an old lime oven where in the late 18th century it was filled with lime snd set on fire to get rid of all the impurities. Then it was shoveled out by hand and soldLeer más

    Back to Camp

    We arrived back at camp and it has been a full day out considering we haven’t done much.
    We decided to stop at the shop on the way back to pick up a Namibia mug for our collection and it was here I found a genuine Raleigh Chopper. This would be worth a fortune back in the Uk in this condition.

    The Southern Viewpoint.

    It took us over an hour of real off road rock crawling to get to the southern viewpoint and we were hoping it would be a loop road but unfortunately we had to take the same road back and that was even worse as it was uphill.
    We finally managed to spot our first wild animals of Springbok and Oryx but no photos as they were quite skittish.    Leer más

    The Canyon Road House

    At 4pm we finally reached our campsite at the Canyon road house. It’s a really quirky little place and our camp is completely unfenced and beautiful.
    We cooked Wors and vegetables on the Braai and when the sun went down it got very cold very quickly and then the wind got up só at 7:30pm we went into the caravan for the night.Leer más

    Our first stop in Namibia 90 minutes after the border was the Spar at Karasburg where we stocked back up in fresh fruit and veg and milk. Then we sat in the car for an hour waiting for the telecoms place to open up only to be told we could get a SIM card down the road opposite spar.
    While we were waiting we witnessed the strangest sight of an old man sit down in the middle of the road and proceed to take off all of his clothes. He then threw them onto a barbed wire fence and carried on walking down the road totally naked shouting at his shadow in the road. The school girls thought it was hilarious.
    We then managed to get a SIM card each from somewherelse and topped both up with data and then we carried on.    Leer más

    Leaving South Africa - Customs

    It was a 130km drive taking nearly 2 hours on a road that was as straight as an arrow all the way to customs.
    Leaving South Africa was easy at the Netty customs station and we had decided to take our chances and hide all contraband like meat and dairy products in the cupboards in the caravan.
    Next it was a 16km drive through no man’s land and onto Namibia customs.    Leer más

    Upington

    After sorting all of our stuff out we drove back into Upington to get some cross border stickers, a shovel and some blocks of wood to go under the caravan legs as our last ones went rotten. We visited Midas, 4x4 mega world and then Upington lumber. I then made a genius solution for carrying our new shovel out of the way because I never want to use it, while Ellie did a marvellous job of modelling it beforehand for our socials.Leer más

    Red sands country lodge

    It took us 6 1/2 hours at 120kph to get here and we had some sketchy moments passing the Lorry’s that can only do 70kph but we’ve made it.
    We arrived just as the sun was setting so the lovely food we brought earlier is staying in the fridge as we’re too tired to cook and we are hitting the restaurant and then going to bed.Leer más
