    Keetmanshoop Shopping

    Our first real stop of the day was Keetmanshoop. It’s 30km in the opposite direction but they have all the shops here that we could want and decided to stick up in fresh produce. We also found some amazing coffee and brought it and that led to us to the Keetmanshoop Mall to look for a coffee maker.
    Once we had that it was time for lunch at the hungry lion which funnily enough only sold chicken burgers……    Leggi altro

    Klein Aus Vista Camp

    After leaving Keetmanshoop it was another 240km and 2.5 hour drive to our next campsite. There was nothing but totally baron landscape inbetween with huge swathes of long straight roads that were just boring.
    There were fields and fields of tiny yellow flowers and these are called John Deere flowers as they are the same colours as the tractors. They only come into massive blooms after significant rainfall and the last time there was this many was 2011 só we are lucky to see so many.
    We arrived at our campsite at 3pm, checked in and then drove to campsite 7.
    It’s not very private because it is just a vast expanse but they have done their best to screen of views of the neighbours and the South Africans are very polite. Tourists are different though. Most just blank us when we wave, smile or say hello.
    The campsite is beautiful. We are surrounded by rocks and there are trails going off into the hills. After going for a run we watched the rocks turn bright orange at sunset before turning back to a dull stone colour as the golden light disappeared.    Leggi altro

    Kolmanskop Ghost Town

    .The wind got up overnight and the temperature plummeted. We had our normal quilt, then a double duvet and then a fleece blanket. To top it off we were also wearing our thermals and we weren’t hot. It was bitterly cold when we came out to make coffee at 5:30am.
    We left the camp at 6:30am because yesterday the sat nav said it was a 2.5 hour drive. This morning it said it was just over an hour so we got to Kolmanskop stupid early but at 8am when they let us in we had the place to ourselves.
    Kolmanskop was a diamond mining town in the early 1920’s that shot up but only lasted about 4 months until all the diamonds were mined. There were so many they were just laying in the sand.
    When the town closed down it took years for anyone to be allowed inside it incase there were still diamonds left.
    The town had a school, a huge hospital, a butchers and bakery and even an ice making factory. This has been on my explore list for a long time and I’m glad we ticked it off.    Leggi altro

    Duwisib Guest Farm & Camping

    We left Klein Aus Vista at 8:40am and initially the sat nav said it was 4 hours but we had only allowed for 3.
    As it turns out it was gravel all the way and we did it in 2 hours but it was like driving in marbles.
    En route there was nothing but baron landscape. I have to admit I’m not really getting the attraction to Namibia. There’s just hundreds and hundreds of miles of nothingness. Most of the time there’s not even a rolling landscape, just flat scenery.
    We got to our next camp at 10:30am and checked in.
    This is the Duwisib Guest farm and we are staying here 2 nights. There is an old German castle next door that the original owners built in 1909 but it now belongs to the Namibia Parks.    Leggi altro

    Duwisib Castle

    After unpacking we walked to the castle and had a look around. The castle was built in 1909 by an ex German soldier and they also brought 6000 hectares of land to start farming.
    They imported the breeding cows from England and the horses from Austria and the sheep from the northern cape.
    The horses were sought after by Namibian farmers and in 1914 the couple left Namibia to go to England to buy Colts but en route WW1 broke out and their ship was diverted to Rio De Janeiro. Here they were held in detention as Germans but the colonel managed to buy their way onto a neutral ship and they went to Germany.
    Back in Germany the ex colonel wanted to help the war effort and re- enlisted but 2 weeks later he was killed in the battle of the Somme.    Leggi altro

    Sossus Oasis Campsite

    It was nearly 3 hours of extreme gravel roads to get here and we lost the gas bottle on route as it fell out the bottom of the trailer. I’m definitely not getting Namibia. There is a lot of nothing. Nobody seems to be a local and all it is, is hire vehicles with roof tents on and those tourists are mainly French and German. None of the tourists are friendly even if you say hello they look at you like you’ve got 2 heads.
    However we have arrived at camp and it is nice and we have great views of the nothingness. We are surrounded by the rooftop tent gangs but fortunately we’ll be out before them un the morning as we have nothing to pack up.    Leggi altro

    Deadvlei

    At 7:15am they let us in. It was bang in sunrise and we were 13th in the queue but that didn’t really count for much as the people camped inside the fence were allowed an hours headstart.
    Once we were in it was like wacky races and the 60kph speed limit meant nothing as people overtook each other in the race to be somewhere first.
    We just sat tight, and gradually cars peeled off at different viewpoints as we drive all the way to the end of the park and engaged low range four wheel drive and hit 3km of super soft sand and deep water. Ghost didn’t falter once and we were soon at the destination of the day.

    Sessrium Campsite

    Back at camp for 9:30am and we were packed and ready to leave by 10:30am for the short drive through the first set of gates to Sessrium Campsite. This isn’t nearly as posh as our last camp but we are inside the first gate which gives us a 1 hour headstart on the park só we can leave one hour before sunrise at 6:15am and get to Deadvlei nice and early.Leggi altro

    Back to Deadvlei for sunrise

    This morning we were up at 5 and into the park by 6am in the dark. We were probably 10th in the queue and as the barrier lifted it was like wacky races with cars racing to be in front of each other.
    I was annoyed at the speed and just stupidity of drivers and thought when we got to Deadvlei all the idiot instagrammed would be there but I was wrong.
    As we approached the 4x4 area loads of them stopped wondering how they were going to get the through. Yes they have a 4x4 but that means nothing if you don’t know how to drive it and which gears to use.
    We had already let the air out of the tyres, we engaged low range put it into 3rd gear and sailed by 4 cars that buried themselves in the deep sand.
    We followed 3 Toyota hilux that were really just ragging the hell out of there cars but to be fair they made it through and got to Deadvlei and carried on driving. None of these idiots knew where they were going and we parked up, walked the 1500 meters over the dunes and got to Deadvlei first r we it’s no other tourists. Ellie was super pleased.    Leggi altro

    A quick stop in Solitaire

    Our next stop en route today was the tiny town of Solitaire.
    Solitaire has a petrol station, a lodge, a general store and a bakery. And a population of 95. There are always more tourists than residents.
    We were here for Mcgregors Bakery made famous by a Scottish man called Paddy McGregor who died in 2014 and came up with a famous apple pie recipe. We had the pie with ice cream and it was amazing.    Leggi altro

    Mirabib Camp

    After 4 hours in the road and roughly 70km between each stop today we finally arrived at our camp.
    Mirabib Camp is an off grid camp in the middle of the desert. It only has 6 pitches around a huge rocky outcrop and we are the only ones here.
    From the main gravel road it took us another hour to get here 32km out in the middle of nowhere. This is the most remote we have ever been.    Leggi altro

    Goanikontes Oasis

    We left Mirabib camp at 9am just after we heard lions contact calling. We were on high alert all the way out of the plains until we got to Walvis bay where we stopped for some shopping.
    From walvis bay it was a 40 minute drive to our camp in the Lunar landscape Of Goanikontes oasis camp just off of moon valley road. This place is in an unbelievable setting deep in a canyon. It’s quirky aswell.Leggi altro

    The petting Zoo

    Today we drove to swakipmond, the next big town and visited a store called bushwackers to replace all of the broken things on the caravan. Namibian roads are super tough.
    On the way back we visited the petting zoo and then the museum in camp before chilling out for the rest of the day and appreciating all the bird life that has come to visit us in camp.Leggi altro

    Swakipmond

    Today we drive into Swakipmond for the second time to collect our goods for the caravan. Namibia has been harsh on the trailer and we’ve needed a new door lock, reflectors in the front and we brought some clips to do the gas doors up properly.
    Leaving town I saw a sign for a canopy shop and we popped in and they fitted brand new working gas struts to our rear door. It makes such a difference.    Leggi altro
