      M’goun valley

      12 de mayo, Marruecos ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We left our lovely little tent, village in the sand and headed to the M’goun Valley. Stopped on the way it’s some amazing amazing 13th century underground infrastructure for moving water around the desert - miles of wells. Sadly, the water table is now depleted so they are not used any more, but the tunnels used to carry a massive amount of water. Then lunch in a home where the food was brilliant before heading off to Todra Gorge. The creek bubbles up from underground and creates a fast flowing creek - with canyon walls 3km high. An amazing sight and popular weekend picnic spot. Finally made it to the M’goun valley in the late afternoon. Such a pretty spot. They have year-round water here, obviously in the valley though.Leer más

      12k's back to Bou Tharar

      30 de marzo de 2023, Marruecos ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

We left at 9am to hike back to Bou Tharar.

We went through the village and fields following the M'Gouna River again.
We go through narrow trails with bamboo or Oleander or White Willow on each side.

We go over a brand new bridge still being built, we are the first to go over apparently.

We also ford the river a few times on wooden posts.

We also get our water shoes back on and cross the river a few times to get to lunch. The river is quite strong and we make a human chain by holding hands to cross. Up to our knees.

We have a lovely lunch under some trees by the river.

Then a steep climb up to get to a plateau, walk across the dry plains to just above Bou Tharar. We can see the green fields amongst the red rock and red buildings. We also see our gite we are heading for, the same one we stayed in (was it only 4 days ago??).

We walk down a steep trail like mountain goats 🐐, then through the sealed streets of town to our gite.
Shower and rest then into a room built like a cave for a yummy afternoon tea.

After that we get dressed by the local ladies in traditional Rose Valley Berber dress and have our last dance with Mohammed (nickname Moumou).

Another rest then dinner at 8.30 after our locals break their fast and have prayers.

      Rose Valley day 2.

      12 de septiembre de 2023, Marruecos ⋅ 🌩️ 29 °C

      Rose's Valley.
      Ighil N'Oumgoun.
After a good night's sleep a yummy breakfast in a cave!
Then 4 1/2 hour 'death march' .... oh no sorry hike. Walk along river through the farm plots.
Probably cked up a dog on the walk who came with us and posed for a pic at tea.
Donkeys squirrels frogs and goats. Tea in the oldest Kasbah in the Valley.
Stunning lunch. 18k steps. Beautiful lunch slow lazy afternoon, henna for the ladies and a toast to Meg (Kate's mum (one of our tribe) who died unexpectedly overnight).
We all wishing we'd said yes to being offered a stop at a bottle shop on the way here as the Valley is alcohol free.
But when the offer was on there were a few red wine/port hang overs happening.

      The Rose Valley

      11 de septiembre de 2023, Marruecos ⋅ 🌩️ 26 °C

Early start for an exceptionally underwhelming sunrise (but we saw one). After the worst coffee in the world a long day of travelling. A quick photo opportunity at the dinosaur park. A visit to the wells 500 rows and 14km of underground springs, as they have dried up you can now walk through, unfortunately due to the earthquake we were unable to do. Stop off for some dates for Mustapha's mum. Lovely lunch and walk through the start of the springs. More driving and a visit to Mustapha's parent home. Felt very privileged as I don't think he does this often.
Arrive at the Rose Valley. Lovely and cool.
Staying at Gite which is a family run guest house. Check out the terrace view.

      Rose Valley Walk

      11 de diciembre de 2023, Marruecos ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today was a rather relaxed day compared to the previous week and a half of activities, tours, and driving. We started with a walk around the town of Bou Thara and a wander through the canyons and up to a viewpoint of the town. This was an alright walk, but improved significantly at the end. Morocco's landscape is beautiful to drive through, but not rather spectacular to walk through. On a large scale, it has beautiful mountains, valleys, canyons, and rivers. However, on a smaller scale, a lot of the landscape is rocky, dusty, and void of flora and fauna. As such, the start of our walk through a canyon was rather uneventful. It was just a lot of rocks. There was a brief walk through the town, but there also wasn't a lot happening here. We eventually got to a viewpoint where we could see the river that we would be walking through next. This is where the walk improved. We wandered along the stream of water through a thin forest that was beautifully coloured. The winter had caused some of the leaves to turn orange and fall off the trees, whereas the snow from the mountains ensured that the river was still flowing, maintaining a nice green glow. In the end, we were blessed with the presence of a few stray puppies who were playful but shy. We then headed back to the hotel for lunch, where we would then have an afternoon free of any commitments. This was nice, as I was due a call with my parents, and some time spent organising the next phase of my trip. Other than this, we all chilled until about 6 pm, when we convened at the terrace for a beer. Amanda and I managed to find an 18% beer, so we figured we would give those a crack. Shock. They were shit. Tasting like beer flavoured vodka, we grit our teeth to get through it before having a few more drinks after dinner. By now, we were quite drunk and figured it was time for bed.Leer más
