      Day 8, Tomar to Alvaiázere

      April 8, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Day 8, Whew, another PR day for me (Kristi). We walked 20.30 miles, a loooong hot day. We walked through more olive groves and eucalyptus forests. We strolled through some quaint villages with gorgeous houses and floral scents throughout the day. That is all wonderful, but we also endured a lot of road walking and cobblestones, which are very hard on the feet. I kept singing to myself, "Follow the yellow arrows, follow the yellow arrows." Just like Dorothy sang in the Wizard of Oz, follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road. It’s strange, the things that enter your mind when you just allow it to wander. Two highlights of the day: we hiked a bit with a young woman from Germany who is hiking with her dog in her backpack, so cute, and a baby wild boar ran across our path! Little bugger was too quick though, so no photo. Tomorrow will thankfully be a shorter day for us.Read more

      First Rainy Day

      March 26 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Left the albergue in Calvinos this morning after a light breakfast of a cup of coffee a banana and some juice that I had bought last night. It was a beautiful albergue, but only 2 of us there. There was no place to eat in town, so we had to go ask the store lady to open up her minimercado for us. We made a pot of knorr swiss soup, had some meat and cheese. Also a few oranges that I had picked. Today was only a 21 km day, and finished in Alvaiazere. The weather today was rain on and off. No sooner than I put my raincoat on and the sun would come, and vice versa all day. This albergue is known for it's elaborate wax stamp that you get in your credential. (See pics)Read more

      Day 7 Tomar to Aalvaiazere

      May 2, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

The guide book says that we would climb out of the flat plains into the central province and climb we did - up, up, and up some more. 20 miles with a high of 92°. (Okay we came down some, but every time we came down, we went up more!) We left at 6:00am to get as much of the trek in as we could before it got too hot. A lot of the hills were Pittsburgh type hills but some were straight up, seemingly never ending. We went through very nice forestry areas and some nice suburban areas, as well as little towns. There were many olive groves, aromatic wildflowers, and yards with planted flowers. A very pretty day but very hot. We were blessed with some shade and a little bit of cloud coverage. It could have been a lot worse. And there was only one cafe on the trail.

We are spending the night at the Albergue Pinheiros run by Carlos. He greeted us with port wine and a very special stamp. Pilgrims carry a passport and get stamps from the places they stay and cafes. I am sure we will not get another stamp as special as Carlos's. He also recommended a place for dinner. Many of the pilgrims staying here went there so we had a great time socializing with our friends from Denmark, Maine, and a new friend from South Africa (Senid, a retired traveling nurse).

      I am thankful...
... That we only have one more 20 mile day scheduled.
... That there was a gas station/convenience store right when we needed it.
... For my husband, whom I love to travel with. We have experienced so much already and I know I wouldn't have done this without him!
