Newberry Caldera

Out to explore more of Newberry National Volcanic Monument today. Now heading southeast to the Newberry Caldera. First stop was Paulina Peak. The access began as a normal paved road, but soon became gravel and climbing. The road narrowed to a little over than one lane and began climbing more steeply. The surface was very washboardy, and Les put the Jeep into 4WD high range. We crawled on up to the peak in first and second gear to fine an empty parking lot at the top. The views were great and we had good sunlight for photography. We both took lots of photos. There were craggy cliffs, Paulina Lake, the Big Obsidian Flow and East Lake. Heading back down the mountain, Les dropped into 4WD low range and second gear, seldom having to brake on the way down.
Our next stop was the Big Obsidian Flow. We started out from the parking lot with Indy leading the way, but found a set of metal stairs that Indy wound have cut his feet on, so he went back to the Jeep to bark. By the time Les got back to the stairs, Jill was at the top of them. The trail on the obsidian flow varied from gravel to jumbles of rock to navigate through up to the peak of the flow and looping back the the top of the stairs. The length of the trail was 3/4 of a mile, but took us over an hour to make the hike. The flow varied in consistancy of the rocks from pumice to obsidian with little vegetation.
We went to eat lunch at a resort restaurant on the shore of Paulina Lake that turned out to be closed. The resort store was still open and we bought some very health food to eat at a nearby picnic table. After lunch we headed to East Lake. The views were not much of an attrction, but we stopped at the boat ramp and let Indy get a walk and a drink of lake water.
Returning to the entrance of the monument, we made one more stop to see Paulina Falls. They were surprisingly high and divided in the middle. We saw them from an overlook near the parking lot. There was another overlook on the other side of the falls, but no bridge close by to get there.
We returned to camp, Les took a nap and then we went to LaPine to eat and Cinco de Mayo restaurant and shop at Ray's market. Returning to camp we loaded the bikes on the rack on the Jeep in preparation of leaving in the morning.Lue lisää

Newberry National Volcanic Monument

We drove up to this US Forest Service National Monument. At the visitor center we sat in on a very good interprestive talk about the volcanic region and life in the rocks. The interpretive displays in the visitor center were top notch and staff were friendly and helpful. Next we went to the top of Lava Butte by vehicle. Only 11 vehicles per half hour are allowed to drive up, as the parking lot at the top only has that much room. The road is very narrow and is an 8% grade. The view from the fire tower is 360 degrees of the area. Our time slot was noon to 12:30pm, so after that we drove north to Bend, OR. We had lunch out, bought dog food and poop bags, and gased up at Costco. Heading south again, we visited the Benham Falls on the Deschutes River. We drove to the trailhead for the overlook and hiked to the view point just over a half mile on a very wide trail mostly. There is a vehicle road to the overlook and in hindsight, we should have taken it. The lack of signage and detailed maps was disappointing, but the falls were impressive. The overall hike was closer to 2 miles and we were very tired by the time we drove back to camp. Dinner was store bougnt pizza and left over french fries.Lue lisää

Moving On East

Well our time in Eugene with the Tubman clan was much enjoyed, but it is time we were moving on to the remainder of our trip. We headed east on Highway 58 and other roads to Deschutes National Forest. We stopped for lunch and a rest at a pull out by Odell Lake. Finally on to LaPine State Park on the Deschutes River. The campground is very nice and well kept. We took the bikes off the Jeep and took a 5 mile ride, first to the McGregor Overlook of the Deschutes River, then on to the Big Tree. At the Overlook, the river does a gooseneck. The Big Tree is not a Sequoia, but a 500 year old Ponderosa Pine. It is the largest Ponderosa we have ever seen.Lue lisää

A Day at a Park

We started the day with doing laundary and eating breakfast in the RV park. Then after lunch, we headed out to Hendricks Bridge County Park where we met up with Sherwood and Li. While Jill and Sherwood painted in the park, Les and Li drove 16 miles to the east to photograph the Goodpasture Covered Bridge. The weather started out with fog, but about the time we got to Henrdicks Bridge County Park, the fog began to break up. We had full sun for photographing the Goodpasture Covered Bridge.Lue lisää

Moving Day

We haven't left the Eugene area yet, but today we moverd from Premier RV Resort in Coburg to Deerwood RV Park in Goshen. The new park is quitter and a little less expensive than the other RV park. It is much more park like too. We had to check out by 11am, but could not check in to the new park until 1 pm. So we drove to a Walmart and did some shopping. Then walked over to a KFC and got lunch. This afternoon we went back to Na ama's house for a turkey meal with the extended family.Lue lisää

Anniversary Day (oops a day earily)

We left the motorhome without breakfast again today to meet you with Asher, Dani and their daughter for breakfast at Morning Glory. Asher is Sherwood and Li's oldest son. After breakfast we went over to Owen Rose Garden and wandered around and down to the bank of the Willamette River. We enjoied the casual get-together. Jill wanted to visit Eugene Textile Center. Expecting a yarn shop for knitters, Les was surprized to fine a fully stocked weaving and spinning shop. They had looms of every style and the same for spinning wheels. Jill bought a pair of small cards for cleaning and carding wool and other fiberous materials. As we got to talking with the gentalman at the desk, we found an interesting small tapestry loom. Jill has seens a used one hanging on the wall eariler, priced a resonable $80, so she bought that too. These were her anniversary gifts. Les is still thinking about what he wants. For dinner, we went back into downtown Eugene and ate at Pub Purlieu. It was delicious French meal. We then went to Sweet Life Patisserie to get dessert to take back to the motorhome. We also got a homemade dog biscuit for Indy who was patiently guarding the motorhome.Lue lisää

Covered Bridges and more Covered Bridges

We left the motorhome without breakfast. Traveling south on I-5, Jill saw a billboard ad for Creswell Bakery, so we had breakfast there. Continuing south to Cottage Grove, we visited 6 covered bridges in that area. As the skies were overcast, Les took pictures with the digital camera. We ate lunch at Blue Valley Bistro on our way north to Hight 58. In the area around Dexter Reservoir, we photographed 5 more covered bridges. On the way back to camp, we stopped at a RV park on Hightway 58 and made a reservation for two nights starting on Sunday.
For dinner, we went to Na ama's place to see her and her children. Na ama is Sherwood and Li's daughter. We had a great time catching up with them before returning to camp.Lue lisää

Biking to lunch.

We have carried our e-bikes and only rode them once so far. We found bike path system along the Willamette River. It covered both sides of the River, with nice bridges to cross every so often. The first part was in this nice large park, Alton Baker Park. So nice. It also went between the freeway and the River, not as scenic but still fun. We stopped at really nice restaurant call Sweet Waters. Light lunch and biked back to the park. Needed to get back to the RV and Indy.

While that was great, the Walgreens I chose on line had the smallest parking lot ever! They took up half of it, with a Dutch Brothers drive through coffee place. They had the place locked up with people trying to get their coffee. Of course we had to go there three times, because of prescription issues. “PLEASE COME. BACK IN AN HOUR” Not only was it a small lot, it was hard to get into. You can’t tell that kind of stuff on line. Only good thing is we got all our meds.Lue lisää

Arriving in Eugene

We headed back into central Oregon and drove to the Eugene area. All the campgrounds are located on the outskerts of Eugene. We got 4 nights at Premier RV Resort in Coburg. We stayed here many years ago and liked it. It is pricy and unforunately right next the I-5, so noisy, but still a nicely laid out park and not crowded. We called our friends Li and Sherwood and got together with them for pizza in Coburg. We have known them since the early 1990's. Jill and Sherwood worked together at Needles BLM.Lue lisää

Tillamook

Slept in this morning and breakfast late too. Les went the Park's laundry. Five washers, Six dryers. Only one washer ready and needed two. So washing took longer than one run. Same thing happened with the dryers. Had a late lunch and headed up to Tillamook. We looked down on the factory floor at Tillamook Factory. Bought Ice cream and cheese. Then snacked on ice cream cones. Returning the the camp to put the ice cream in the freezer, we went out again, now to the beach. Indy found part of a dead crab and rolled on it. We took Indy back to the motorhome and we went out for dinner in Pacific City with a view of the ocean.Lue lisää

The Wild Women is done for another year. Poor Les drove two hours to pick Jill up, and another two hours back. We did stop at an interesting small hamburger joint. Indy seems a little miffed at Jill. We stopped at small rest area, and he didn’t want to play with her, just Les.Lue lisää

Moved, but didn't Leave

Tomorrow, Les has to make the 5 hour round trip to pick up Jill in Happy Valley, OR. But the reservation here at Pacific City had him leaving here tomorrow. Without Jill to navigate, Les didn't want to take the motorhome back through the twists and turns. So we extended out stay at Thousand Trails Pacific City for another day or two. The problem was that B3 campsite was reserved tomorrow by someone else. So Les opted to move to a different site today so he could get an early start tomorrow morning. Today started with a little rain and it was cloudy all day. The views are limited, so Les stayed with Indy in the motorhome and watched TV after moving to campsite A23. Starlink has spotty connection in the new site, but the campground WiFi works just fine.
Just after the intiial post of this footprint, Les noticed the sun peeking through the trees and decided, He and Indy should go to the beach. The McPhillips Beach Vehicle Beach Access was only a few hundred yards from the campground entrance. We parked on the beach and walked around and plaied and took a few pictures. Les stayed on damp wet sand and forded a tiny fresh water stream. He used 4 wheel drive to climb back up the hill to the parking area.Lue lisää

Powells and Downtown Portland

Wild Women spent morning relaxing at the Vrbo rental, then off to Portland’s famous Powell’s Book store. We then visited a couple of the festivals at downtown parks/squares. Wonderful people watching. A Drag show was at one. Lots of steps were recorded. Then drove another Portland special spot…Voodoo Donuts. Drove down Highway 43 and the Willamette River Park to watch sail boats. Finally, dinner with Sue’s niece. She lives right on the river. She really made a wonderful dinner and we had a great time.Lue lisää

Trolls and Roses

We slept in after a late night. More shopping at the Happy Valley Farmers Market. Off to the Broder Söder, for a Scandinavian meal, great fun. (Only they were out Lefes ). Thanks Sue for the great Idea and meal. Then we visited Ole Bolle the Troll. The artist has been putting these trolls all over the world. After communicating with Ole, we went to the Portland Rose Garden. Heading back we of course stopped and good old Freddy M, for cheese, crackers and beer.Lue lisää

Bridges

This morning, Les and Indy went out looking for covered bridges to photograph. The first was Drift Creek Covered Bridge, which was relocated to Bear Creek. It now leads to a private residence and not open to vehicle traffic. The next was Alva 'Doc" Fourtner Covered Bridge which seems to be on a private ranch at Grand Ronde. Access was not clear. The pictures on the internet showed a pretty ugly, modified bridge, so he did not get to it to take a photo.
Heading back toward camp, Les took a detour on Old Highwy 101 from Otis, OR to Neskowin, OR through old growth forest. The road was narrow and curvey, but is fairly good condition. Les took cell phone pictures and video. It was a beautiful drive
Back on Highway 101, he past the turn off for Pacific City and continued north to Tillamook, OR to fuel up the Jeep. This part of 101 moves in land from the coast and goes through several small farming towns, like Cloverdale and Hebo. The road was a slow drive as it is narrow and curvey with lots of traffic. Returning from Tillamook (without cheese) he found another road back to camp. It was alot straighter and in better condition, so it cut off a bunch of time to the drive.Lue lisää

Very busy WildWomen’s day in Portland.

The day started by going to a violin shop, so Linn could ask questions about a couple of instruments she is giving to her great nieces. Then we traveled into Portland and did some scenic driving around. Portland is a lot like San Francisco, even has a Nob Hill. Very fancy homes. Then spent the afternoon shopping in the Alphabet District. Had early dinner with Linn’s sister Karen and husband Jeff. Finished the night at the repertory theater in Clackamas.Lue lisää

North American Aerospace Museum

Les and Indy took the Jeep over to McMinnville to see the Spruce Goose. Les spent about 3 hours wandering amoung several dozen aircraft, all dwarfed by the Spruce Goose. This is the largest flying seaplane ever built and it is made of WOOD. It was built during WWII, but not finished until after the war. Howard Hughes, millionare and famous test pilot, built it to fly service personel and equipment across the Atlantic to avoid being a target for U Boats. But after the war ended, it was not needed. The Spruce Goose was the only one constructed and was only flown once by Howard Hughes to prove it could fly. He then stored it in a custom build hanger to preserve it. It was taken apart and shipped to McMinnville, OR and reassembled, thus becoming the center piece of the Air and Space Museum.Lue lisää

WildWomen Haven Rest

Each time the we get together, we like to have a relaxing day at a spa. This time it was at Haven Rest Day Spa. Great place for massages. Out to lunch at a food truck area. Lots of choices. Then shopping at Fred Meyer’s for tomorrow breakfasts. Most of us have leftovers from the first night’s Chinese Restaurant…just add eggs.Lue lisää

Returning to the Coast

The Wild Women stayed in a B&B in Boring and Les took the motorhome and Jeep back to the coast. Destination, Thousand Trails Pacific City campground. Now keep in mind that normally Les drives the motorhome and Jill is the navigator. But for this drive, Les and Indy had to rely on Google Maps for navigation. At the State Park, Les had to park out of the trees to get the Starlink to work to set up Google maps and get it talking throgh the motorhome's radio. After messing with that and not being successful, he started out using the instructions on the screen of his tablet. There were lots of turns on narrow , twist back country roads. At one point he found a large parking lot to pull into to let traffic go by. As he was stopping, planning to try to get Google Maps to work, Google Maps ordered him to return to the road he just left very loudly from the motorhome radio. So he proceded down the road. At some point, Google lost contact with the radio intermittently. Instructions returned without the beginning of the message. Usually, there was enough of the message that he could follow what it was saying, but south bound on I-5 toward Salem, one message was simple "East". Having no idea what that meant, he continued toward Salem. Unfortunately, he was supposed to make a turn toward the coast. Les got off I-5 in Salem and found a big parking lot and stopped to try and get Google Maps work correctly again. He gave up and checked the map directions and saw he should turn Right out of the paqrking lot and head west on Highway 22. Leaving parking lot, Google told him to turn Left. He did and quickly found himself ignoring Google and found his own way through the back of the Outlet Mall and then Google Maps finally starter giving him correct instructions again. Heading west on Hwy 22, there came another place a turn was required, but the road in front of him had several possible turns and signs that didn't help. Quickly, he entered and small town and he knew something was not right. He was just starting to find a place to park when Jill called. She was following Les on her Find My app and knew he was lost. We got back heading west on Hwy 22 with lots of confused instructions. Eventully, Les got to Highway 130 to Pacific City, yea! Jill said it look straighter the staying on Hwy 22. It was very narrow, twisty, and had about 4 single lane bridges, but it got him to Hwy 101 and headed north. At that point Google Maps was able to guide him to the Thousand Trails. It was well past time for a nap, Les was not only quite tired, but also very frustrated. Before dinner, Les found the only market and did some shopping. He took the bikes off the Jeep, planning to go to McMinnville. But that story will have to wait until tomorrow, stay tuned.Lue lisää

Boring and Dull

We got up late and went out to meet the other Wild Women at a little coffee shop in Happy Valley. Sue and Judy were there, but Linnea was waiting on the Covid test. She arrived later. Les returned to the motorhome where Indy was standing guard. The Wild Women, minus Linnea came over the see Indy and pick up things Jill had forgotten. We all met for dinner in Boring, Linnea was also there. Les brought more things Jill forgot.
As it turns out, the town of Boring, OR has a sister city in Scotland, "Dull". August 9th each year they celebrate Boring and Dull Day.Lue lisää

Heading In Land

Leaving the coast, we traveled on a number of smaller roads to Milo McIver State Park. It is a nice State Park except for two things. First, the canopy of trees was too dense for Starlink to work and cell service was quite limited, but we were able to watch PBS news. Second was the speed bumps. The speed limit is 25 mph, so on the only straight flat portion of the park road, they installed 4 speed bumps. A normal car has to slow to 10 mph to go over them. A motorhome towing a vehicle has to slow down to 3 mph. Les hit the first one he didn't see at about 10 mph, it about jarred his teeth out and he does not have false teeth.Lue lisää

Coastal Views

Heading back toward Newport, we made several stops to sightsee the views along the coast. Just out of Lincoln City, we stopped to photograph three rocky islands in a line. I remimber photographing this scene back in the 1990's, so we did it again anyway. Next stop was Boiler Bay. This is a large parking area with view of the bay and the area south of the point. Just south we stopped at Pirate Cove. This stop was off the highway, through a very tight residential neighborhood with a parking lot for 2 and a half parking places. Les shot a number of digital photos of wave action. Getting off the highway, we drove the old highway alignment now called Otter Chest Loop.
Entering Newport, we had an early and very tasty lunch at Chalet. We both had the Lunch Special the had a half sandwich, a side dish and desert. Our meals differed, but the pies we chose were both excellent. After lunch we made a quick stop at Walmart for a loaf bread and a couple of rubber duckys. Now it was time to go to Yaquina Head Lighthouse. We were there back in 1996 (I think). At that time, there was barely signage. Now it was quite different. The area was identified as "Yaquina Head Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area". This is a Bureau of Land Management area. There is now an entrance station and a GREAT visitor center. We were lucky to find a parking place at the lighthouse. Les took large format photos of the lighthouse and Cobble Beach. Jill sat on the approach to the lighthouse with Indy and did a new sketch of the lighthouse. I had wanted to get a video of Cobble Beach where at high tide, the cobbles on the beach rattle as the wave retreats, a very interesting sound. Unfortunately, the tide was out, so we passed on the trip down the big stairway to the beach.
The last stop was across the Yaquina River Bridge to the Oregon Marine Aquarium. This is a very well built and designed marine aquarium. Returning back to camp, we were very tired.Lue lisää

Meeting up with a Friend

Well Les got up early to dump the tanks(since we both took showers and the grey water tank was full) and put the bikes back on the Jeep. Not that we have been riding the bikes, just taking them off and locking them to the motorhome hitch to shorten the Jeep. It also is easier to get in the back for Indy. After breakfast, we hooked up the jeep and headed north once again. We traveled a couple of hours to Lincoln City, OR and the KOA campground there. The road north of Newport is in the process of going out to sea, so it got bretty rough in spots. After resting and having a late lunch, we took the Jeep back south to Newport, OR to visit a friend and painter that used to live in South Lake Tahoe. TC moved up here to share a place with one of her daughters, but the daughter did not like the wind and backed out of the deal. Undetured, TC moved anyway. As she was in SLT, TC is still active with watercolor at the senior center and driving a car. We took her to dinner at the Chowder House. Unsurprizingly, we all had clam chowder. It was great catching up with TC.Lue lisää

Oregon Dunes and Bridges.

Day started with Les going out before breakfast to photograph the Umpqua River Bridge again, but this time with morning light. The bridge was not exciting enough to use the 4x5 camera. Returning to the motorhome expecting a home cooked breakfast waiting for him, Jill had found a bakery in town. After donuts mwe (including Indy), headed to a Forest service trailhead by the Eel River. The trail was supposed to be approximately a mile loop. At the top of the loop we were hiking on Dune sand. Les and Indy went to the top of the Dune, Jill stopped halfway up, fell down and accidentally called Les’s sister. Meanwhile Les got lost and ended up in a nearby campground. Jill returned to the car the way they came, Les finished the loop and returned to car.
Next we went to the “old” town in Florence, OR. This is quite a going area, lots of little stores, and restaurants. After lunch Les went to photograph the Siuslew River Bridge, Jill did a little tourist shopping. She bought a couple of things in one store, in the next store across street she couldn’t find her card wallet. Back and forth…no luck finding it. Thank goodness, it didn’t have her drivers license, and only two credit cards, two health insurance cards, and her library card…So she and Les went back to the car, and called those credit cards. Around and around we went with both bank’s phone Ai, it took about an hour to get human help. Cards locked. Our jeep also got ducked again.
Finally, back to yesterday’s lighthouse and bridge, so Les could use his Large format camera in sunshine. Jill didn’t hike back up to the lighthouse, but did quick sketch from the parking lot.
Too tired and Jill too stressed to cook we went out to eat again.Lue lisää

Bridges and a Lighthouse

It rained most of the night and into this morning. When is stopped, Jill and Les took the Jeep up the coast to Heceta Head Lighthouse. The access road led us under the Cape Creek Bridge. This is another of a large number of beautiful Oregon bridges built in the late 1920's and through the 1930's by engineer Conde McCullough. Though the light was poor, we both took pictures of the bridge. and the lighthouse. To get to the lighthouse, we had to take a 1/2 mile hike up to the lighthouse in the rain. Jill stopped at the gift shop and bought a tee shirt, some snacks and a lepel pin. At the lighthouse, we found another trail that went further up the hill. Les took this trail and found a view of the top of the lighthouse.
We stopped at a Mexican resuarant for lunch. Returning to the camp, Les took a nap before heading out to recon photo locations for the Umpqua River Bridge just north of Reedsport. Most of the river shore is private. Finally he found a stairway up the railroad embankment at the end of the railroad bridge just upstream frrom the Umpqua River Bridge. There were no signs or fencing and the top of the rails was rusty, indicating no recent rail traffic. Although the light was still poor, he took some digital photos. If there is good morning light tomorrow, he will take the 4x5 camera back to get more photos of the Umpqua River Bridge.Lue lisää
