Old Orhei, Moldova

Unser heutiges Ausflugsziel entscheiden wir sehr spontan - wir bestellen kurzerhand ein Taxi, das uns zu einem rund 50 km entfernten Ort bringen soll. Blöd nur, dass die Strecke mangels Autobahnen eineinhalb Stunden dauert und unseren Fahrer entsprechend wenig begeistert. Mit einem leicht erhöhten Fahrpreis und einem gesponserten Kaffee lässt er sich dann aber doch überzeugen.
Unser Ziel: Old Orhei, eine der historisch bedeutendsten Stätten des Landes. Die Anlage liegt spektakulär auf einer Klippe über dem Fluss Răut und war über Jahrhunderte hinweg Siedlungsort verschiedenster Kulturen: von dakischen Stämmen über die Goldene Horde bis hin zu orthodoxen Mönchen, die hier ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben.
Während die eigentliche Klosteranlage heute leider nur von aussen zu besichtigen ist, können wir die darunterliegenden Höhlen erkunden. In den Fels gehauen, haben Mönche hier einst eine kleine, schlichte aber eindrückliche Kapelle eingerichtet.
Mit demselben Fahrer geht es anschliessend direkt weiter zu unserem nächsten Treffpunkt, viel Alternativen gibt es hier nämlich nicht, wenn man einmal angekommen ist.

We decide on today’s destination on the spur of the moment - we promptly book a taxi to take us to a place about 50 km away. The only problem is that, due to the lack of motorways, the journey takes an hour and a half, which doesn’t exactly thrill our driver. However, with a slightly higher fare and a free coffee, he eventually agrees.
Our destination: Old Orhei, one of the country’s most historically significant sites. The complex is spectacularly situated on a cliff above the River Răut and has been home to a wide variety of cultures over the centuries: from Dacian tribes and the Golden Horde to Orthodox monks, all of whom have left their mark here.
Whilst the actual monastery complex can unfortunately only be viewed from the outside today, we are able to explore the caves below. Carved into the rock, monks once established a small, simple yet impressive chapel here.
We then continue directly to our next meeting point with the same driver; there aren’t many alternatives here once you’ve arrived.Read more
