Niš, Serbia

Die Geschichte von Niš ist schnell erzählt. Nach unserer Ankunft schlendern wir durch die Stadt, doch so richtig will der Funke nicht überspringen. Zwischen alten Häusern, neueren Gebäuden und zahlreichen Plattenbauten wirkt das Stadtbild etwas zusammengewürfelt, und vieles hat seine besten Tage leider bereits hinter sich.
Die römischen Ausgrabungen der Geburtsstadt von Kaiser Konstantin dem Grossen sind ausgerechnet heute geschlossen. Und der berühmte Schädelturm? Historisch sicher bedeutend - aber irgendwie ist die Frage berechtigt, weshalb man sich freiwillig eingemauerte Schädel ansehen sollte.
Also heisst es für uns: Abschied von Serbien. Nächster Halt: Bulgarien.

The history of Niš is a short one. After arriving, we stroll through the town, but it doesn’t really capture our imagination. With its mix of old houses, newer buildings and numerous prefabricated blocks, the townscape seems a bit of a hodgepodge, and much of it has, sadly, seen better days.
The Roman excavations in the birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great are closed today, of all days. And the famous Skull Tower? Certainly significant historically - but one can’t help but wonder why anyone would want to look at skulls that have been walled up of their own free will.
So it’s time for us to say goodbye to Serbia. Next stop: Bulgaria.Read more
