  • Valparaiso

    14–16 Jan, Chile ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

A 120 km coach ride to Valparaiso via the Casa del Bosque winary in the Casablanca valley for a wine tasting session. Then on to our hotel in the city and a meal out.

Valparaiso has a rich maritime history as a key 19th-century Pacific trading hub and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's an uber shabby-chic bohemian place, full of art and culture. Paintings, drawings and graffiti adorn a myriad of many, many surfaces.

A guided walk on the morning of day 2 revealed all the wonderful arty-farty delights. In the afternoon we left the group and had the best meal of the holiday so far in a seafood restaurant - the Maralegre.

  • Mendoza

    16–18 Jan, Chile ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Mendoza is Argentina's premier wine region, particularly for its world-class Malbec, set against stunning mountain backdrops. Our stay here has a big wine theme! The city itself is very attractive and has cool vibe.

The journey here over the Andes was spectacular and it looks like we passed South America's highest peak - Mount Aconcagua at 6967m.

We visited three wineries to learn about the wine making process and, of course, to sample the produce. At the third we had a gourmet luncheon with paired wines.

The bird highlight of the footprint was the sighting of a Burrowing Owl!

  • Buenos Aires Deep Dive

    21 Januari, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A guide took us to a wide variety of sights, institutions and locations in the city, which demonstrated it's grandness and scale, as well as its status as a global cultural icon.

Our tour encompassed the opera house, cathedral, cemetery, old port quarter, government offices, parks and markets. Also included was La Boca, a working-class area with a cluster of attractions near the Riachuelo River. Steakhouses and street artists surround Caminito, a narrow alley flanked by brightly painted zinc shacks

A big surprise in our hotel, as a major UK TV personality was staying there. Guess who got a photo with her?

The day ended with a traditional tango show!

  • Iguazu

    22–24 Jan, Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Two nights at Iguazu staying in Brazil, where the focus of the visit was to experience Iguazú Falls. We also visited an indigenous people's community project and a bird centre (the latter by only one member of the party...).

The waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. Together, they make up the largest waterfall system in the world.

We had a full immersion, with a helicopter ride, visits on both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides, plus a boat trip to the base of the falls. Conclusion: they are mighty impressive!

  • Rio de Janeiro

    25–27 Jan, Brazil ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

A one and a half hour flight and we reached the final leg of the tour - two nights in Rio, staying in a hotel on the Copacabana beach front.

Must-do visits were made to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugar Loaf Mountain landmarks. We had lunch in the
Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhood, where a passing carnival warm up parade added the right sort of vibe to the atmosphere.

While the weather was a bit cloudy, it did not dampen the impressive drama that these have to offer in what seemed to be a crazy city!

The tour ended with a marvellous farewell group meal in a Brazilian restaurant (full of locals), which also provided an opportunity to thank our wonderful guide, Daniella.
