Sunshine finally!

It has been so foggy and rainy and yesterday we finally had a break in the weather-Sunshine-yippee. Saturday I went to the movies and saw the movie Snowden which was great. Sunday morning my cousin Zdenko turned on the stove in the morning and activated the drying process of the super chillies in the oven. We were all coughing and barely breathing with the amount of capsicum that was in the air. I now know what bear spray is all about. It was an awful feeling. All the windows were opened and the chillies were quickly wrapped up and throw into the trash. Zdenko dropped me off close to my aunts and I went for a nice long walk by myself in the beautiful sunshine. Haven't been walking as much as I should be. I had Sunday lunch at my aunts which consisted of duck, cabbage, dumplings and apple strudel. After lunch we went to a shopping mall which I would never have guessed because it certainly did not look like a shopping mall with my aunts friend Milka(yes just like the chocolate). She is going to check into tickets to see the ballet "Giselle" for me. I hope they are not too expensive because I really want to go. I booked my flight back to Dublin for the 6th of December and will be catching the bus from the airport to Galway. I plan on spending at least five days there and then heading south. My flight-35 euros from Bratislava to Dublin. So incredibly cheap to fly in Europe.Read more

Day 87
Evening market at the Bratislava castle

Found out that there was a market at the Bratislava castle and so Martina and I met up and went to check it out. It was brisk and it started to snow lightly. There was a nativity scene set up in the courtyard with live sheep, goat and cute brown donkey. The sheep were super friendly. We walked down into the lower square later and went for a chocolate cappucino in a lovely little cafe called Mondieu. It had real 80% melted dark chocolate melted on the bottom-decadent!Read more

Cultural nights

Tuesday night I went to the Chamber orchestra at the school of music. The musical pieces celebrated 250 years of Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Hayden. My favourite piece was Mozart Divertimento F dur, KV 138 -Presto. The violins were incredible in this piece. Wednesday night we went to the National Theatre and saw Giselle (happens to be my middle name). Words can't describe the feeling I had when I walked in-my dream realized. The ballet was magnificent with a beautiful stage, wonderful dancers and full orchestra. Pictures were not allowed. At set change we had a glass of prosecco in the lower foyer. The ballet finished with ten full minutes of applause.Read more

Fashion in Slovakia 1945-1989

New exhibit at the national gallery showcasing fashion in Czechoslovakia from 1945-1989. Fashion was considered taboo and so a lot of fashion was conceived through the underground. In the mid 40's women were encouraged to wear overalls and this was considered sexy and practical. In the 60's fashion was homogeneous and everyone wore the same style and colour. Patterns were smuggled in and women shared them to sew their own clothes with adding their own touch of creativity. There was only one fashion show during this entire era and it came from Paris (Dior)and was quickly banned because the women went crazy. The fashion capital of Czechoslovakia at that time was Trencin. In 1989 when communism fell the fashion channels opened and importing fashionable clothes became a big business. Interestingly enough I remember wearing some of those clothes (a pair of generic gym shorts and a snow hat).Read more

Now for something completely different

Bratislava days and all kinds of action in the city. Free museums, galleries, music and historic plays. I went to the oldest pastry shop in town that was built in 1634, was frequented by Queen Maria Theresia and took over 10 years to restore. Absolutely expensive but absolutely beautiful. Amazing murials, stained glass and toilets. Next was the St. Ladislav chapel, art exhibition of Jozef Drozd(who I actually met and shook hands with) a very old artist, then the home of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (who wrote sonatas with Mozart and Beethoven), and finally the museum of torture. The last venue was morbidly interesting and what amazed me the most was that parents brought their small children to this museum. Something I would never have done. The city had streetcars running from the early 30's but they were super packed and I didn't feel like being crammed in like a sardine so I passed.Read more

Christmas market preparation

Yesterday was a holiday marking the day of freedom from Communism November 17th, 1989. We walked the squares for four hours and went to two museums and the candy shop. The night before Milka took us to the Beer Museum pub. It was great, non smoking, home crafted beers and the beermeister was pouring. So much fun. There was a band from Ohio playing next door. The huge Christmas trees were being decorated in the squares and the stands were being set up as well as the stage for musical entertainment every night.Read more

Sunny sunny sunny weather...

A whopping 24 degrees in the city yesterday and all the outdoor cafes along the Danube are packed with people. The flowers and trees are all blooming and there are bees everywhere. I took a street I was familiar with yesterday and found the Nedbalka gallery which had an exhibit of Albin Brunovsky, the lithograph artist I fell in love with at the Trencin castle. Amazing work. He was born in Zahor which in close to the Moravian mountains in 1935. Started his career in the sixties as impressionist fantasy. His work was shunned by the communists and in 1989 a large portion of his work was released. He illustrated children's books but the children were to scared to read the books because of the pictures. His art flows from one object and melds into another. After 1989 when communism fell his art became even more bizarre. After the exhibit I had a cappucinno in the cafe upstairs and read books about other Slovak artist and listened to Mozart. A wonderful day alone.Read more

Back in the homeland

I got into Vienna around 2:30 by train and my bus wasn't leaving until 4:30 so I had a few hours to wander. I walked to the Imperial Palace and Karlzplatz and there were so many people everywhere. It was getting late so I caught the underground to the bus terminal where there were some colourful characters and signs everywhere to watch for pickpocketers. Apparently this is a huge problem in Vienna. Caught my €5 bus to the Bratislava airport and the the city bus to my aunts. It was a long day if traveling but it was good to be back in Bratislava. Aunt was pretty happy to see me too. She had made me a chucked dinner with my favourite beer. I haven't eaten chicken in two months. Alas it was laundry time.Read more

Wedding day

What a cooker today, 35 degrees. My first experience at a family wedding in Slovakia. Started off at a municipal hall where each wedding couple has a slotted 1/2 hour time to get hitched. There are no personalized wedding vows just simple name changes of the bride and groom. A groomsman walks around with a bottle of Slivovica offering guests shots before the wedding. After the wedding the bride receives flowers and we are off to Cilizko to the reception at the hotel Kormoran. We wait outside and the waiter brings a shot for the bride and groom and then breaks a plate (for good luck). The from sweeps the broken plate into the dustpan the bride is holding. The grooms friends stomp through the plate so they have to sweep again. This happens three times. We make our way up to the reception hall where it's even hotter as the air con is not working and toast the bride and groom with prosecco. Dinner includes pate, chicken soup (I am now feeling the sweat drip down my back) pork(I pawn mine off to my uncle) with roasted potatoes. Martina, my cousin Zdenko's girlfriend makes the most incredible cake ever. So damn good! It's now 23:00hrs, I'm overheated and a little too much Diplomatico and it's time to check out. I catch a ride with Lubos the driver and we have a great talk as he drops me off; forever checking on Domenik in the back to make sure he is still with us.Read more

Bunny love & rainy Christmas market

Look at the cutie pie I've got in my hands. Gave Milka a helping hand in feeding her as she wasn't eating -Little Muffin. Went to the market in the pouring rain but it was great. Had a langos which was deep fried and covered in hot garlic. Slovak delicacy washed down with hot mulled wine -yum and yum. More pork on the spit and an excellent variety of home made Slovak food. Musicians in the square every night.Read more
