      D30- Molinaseca to Camponaraya 19km

      June 12 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Walked 573km (356 miles) so far. 194.8km (121 miles ) to go. Nice easy walk today, a lot of street walking through towns and on the sides of roads between towns. Stopped off in Ponferrada where Garry, Simon and John visited the Templars Castle of Ponferrada, built in the 12th century. While the boys were looking around the castle Chris, Kate and I went to the square and had breakfast. We then had a look in the church and walked to the next square where the police were doing a demonstration with young police dogs. Towns we passed through today were Campo, Compostilla, Columbrianos and Fuentes Nuevas. Just before Camponaraya we came across a wild cherry tree and had a small feast on cherries. We stayed in the Albergue La Medina, lovely hosts and beautiful garden with deck chairs to relax out the back.Read more

      D31- Camponaraya to Pradela 20.7km

      June 13 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Leaving Camponaraya we walked along the road for a bit then stopped for breakfast at Cacabelos. We then took to the hills again where we passed some vineyards which we hadn’t saw for quite some time. We are seeing more cherry trees now and have tried a few different varietes. On the descent we see the town of Villafranca del Bierzo. Villafranca is a lovely town, quite big in compared to other towns we have passed through. Coming into town we passed the castle then stopped at a cafe for lunch. There was a market on in Villafranca so we wandered through on our way out of town. After we crossed the bridge we took the path to the right and went on up the hill. It was a very steep and long climb and eventually we arrived at Pradela. Chris was quite unwell today and only just managed to get to the Albergue after many stops to lay down for a while on the way. Anna the host of our Albergue was amazing, she made special rice soup for Chris, made us all feel so welcome, and didn’t rush us out the next morning. We slept until eight as we were having a rest day and only going to the next town which was 3km away. Anna made a beautiful chestnut cake. The long climb up the hill was definitely worth it.Read more

      Day 33 - Camponaraya

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We are 75% done with our walking portion of the Camino (in terms of days walking). We are 73.8% complete in actual miles. We have walked 362 miles of the 490 miles for the whole Camino.
Today was right 11 miles and was pretty much city walking the whole way. It is getting a little cooler each day. There is a chance of rain in a few days, I am hoping it does not or at least is very light.Read more

      Day 33-Camponaraya

      October 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

13 miles today of flat, mostly sidewalk. We are 3/4 of the way done. It's hard to believe.

We had a lovely breakfast served by our Brazilian hosts and we purposely didn't overeat, even though they kept offering more food.

On the way to the next town, Ponferrada, a lady we've seen for the last two days told us about a Roman fountain up ahead. Her husband started walking two hours earlier and told her about it. It was a little scary walking down the steps to it because they just kept going and going and getting darker. We thought for sure we were being fed to the lions. We started joking that it's not everyday you see a Roman fountain or cross a Roman bridge, but walking the Camino you kinda do.

We toured the Templar Knight's castle in Ponferrada. It looks just like the castles from our fairy tales. It was surreal seeing it in person and the thought behind the construction...an exit stairway to a well that draws water from the river.

Our place tonight is an albergue and restaurant. The restaurant is closed today and there are only five of us staying here. Pat and I are currently the only ones sitting in the huge garden. The restaurant must be alot of fun when it's open.

      Days 26, 27, 28 & 29 - Camponaraya

      October 5, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

This Camino keeps delivering certain lessons whether we want them or not. Today’s? Our bodies need more time to heal, so we’ll be spending another four nights here for rest and recovery.

We’re very thankful we were able to extend our stay at the Hostal La Medina de Camponaraya through Sunday.

Our room is comfortable, the staff very nice, and whatever we might need is available close by.

The eighth wonder of the world

      October 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Just when I think I have transcended the capacity to get any more wet I'm proved wrong, but I've become one with the damp life now 😌 34K definitely justified beers in (non bunk!!) beds followed by one of the most lovely evenings so far with the owners sat down having dinner with us. Susi who ran it had decided spontaneously while walking the camino to sell her flower shop back in Aus on gumtree and buy a delapitated old barn to do up as an albergue. Her partner was a pilgrim who had met her staying there and proposed within 4 hours (!!) An incredible story!!Read more

Q3 review - one million steps!

      April 20 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Three quarters of the way through the Camino Frances, let's update our stats:

      Days on Camino: 26
Days walking: 24 (have not taken any rest days since Burgos on 8 April)

      Total distance walked: 729km/1,024,009 steps
      Camino distance walked: ~600km
      Camino distance remaining: 185km

Average daily cost: €34/$54.40 (accommodation €11.60/$18.50, eating and drinking €22.40/$35.80, rising as I have developed a mild caffeine addiction and started eating out more)

Least used item: head torch. Ive only started walking pre-dawn a few times, and I don't use it in the dorm because I'm not a disorganised psychopath, so unless you were walking at a time of year when the sunrise is significantly later, I'd cull it. Everything else is in either constantly rotation or for a period, it was the most important thing but I can't ditch it now (rain gear and medical canister).

Shoe update: we've had a blow out! Noticed it yesterday, whoever had front left of right shoe in the sweeps please make yourself known, and for double or nothing pick which of the two hot spots will be next to fall. Tread has been fairly trodden but is holding on, that tear will compromise the waterproofing but I haven't had rain in nearly two weeks so fingers crossed, and the heels are holding on. I reckon we can do this easy.

Our first day of steady rain

      October 23, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

It has been a month of walking, this afternoon was the first day we walked under a steady rain. And windy, as we walked over the top of several low hills in the valley.

Not a lot of pictures, especially towards the end of the walk. But we made it, tired and damp!Read more

      26. Etappe nach Camponaraya

      April 16 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Das sieht mir ähnlich, was?!

Day 31: Molinaseca to Cacabelos, part 2

      June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

This might be my favorite part of Spain so far.

1.-4. Mountains surrounded me all day, and then the last part of the day gave me views of vineyards, too.
      5. I hadn’t seen hydrangeas blooming until today. Purple!!
      6. Cacabelos street
      7. and 8. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Plaza, which…
      9. … happens to be across the street from my hotel. This is the view from my balcony.
