      Day 32

      September 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

This morning started unexpectedly damp!! A quick root through my bag to find my waterproof coat, extra long sleeved top and rucksack cover and off I eventually go…
Today’s walk wasn’t too far, so I opted to take the alternative scenic route despite it being about 7km further. A good decision, it was a very undulating day, through wooded tracks, trails and villages with very little on, or alongside the roads.
Due to this I met less people, quite nice as the route apparently becomes quite busy from Sarria to Compostela.
Once again I bumped into Alexander ( barefoot ) he commented that I’d passed him a few times and that he remembered me saying hello to him at the statue outside of O’Cebreiro yesterday. He then asked if I’d take a photo of him ( with his phone ) and offered to do the same for me..
On my arrival in Sarria, I met the three Irish ladies again, they had just finished.and we’re quite giddy. The stages between Leon and Sarria were all they had left to do having started it years ago.. they did the final section last time just in case anything happened to one of them so that they’d have their Camino certificates. They too asked me to take their picture and I asked if they’d mind if I took one of them .. they’re fabulous 🥰
The temperature has dramatically dropped this evening, fortunately I’ve found a fleece blanket under my bed, that is now definitely on top of it!!!
Off for dinner now.. I wonder what culinary delight awaits.. 😂

Through Hamlets & Woodlands to Sarria

      October 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

What a gift today's weather has been! Wore shorts & a t-shirt for the first time in a couple of weeks. Sunshine & blue sky was with us through our mostly woodland, rolling-hill walk to Sarria. There were several times we had to break out the rain ponchos for brief sprinkles, but then the sun returned. The temps were in the high 60's for most of the day.
Saw a farmer harvesting chestnuts with a cool rake, he posed for me. Saw lots of gardens with pumpkins & squash. Many farms with goats & chickens. There was a pretty unusual black-headed, white body goat we took a pic of. Also, got treated to 2 pretty cool rainbows!

      “The second arrow”

      August 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Loneliness seems to be right at the surface the past few days. Leaving Triacastela and heading for Samos, a less traveled detour off the main Camino trail, I felt lonely again walking by myself without any other pilgrims in sight on the trail.

There were nice parts of the walk and nice parts of the day. A lot of the trail was lush and green and forested, which felt serene to walk in the misty weather. I got to visit the 1,000 year old Cypress tree and tour the monastery. Mostly, though, today felt lonely.

I realized when reflecting on the day how true the Buddhist teaching is about the difference between pain and suffering. I noticed how when I was feeling lonely today, my reaction to the loneliness made it worse. It felt easy to start to judge and question why I chose to do the Camino alone and think, “You chose this, so it’s your fault you’re feeling this way.”

Noticing this extra layer of suffering (judgmental thoughts) in reaction to the pain (loneliness) is helping me try to be compassionate toward myself and remember that there are reasons I chose to do this walk alone and that I couldn’t have known that August was the unofficial month of Italian pilgrims.

I am hoping the rest of my trip isn’t as lonely as the past few days have been, but if they are, I’ll try my best not to add to the pain by judging or blaming myself for it.

I also want to acknowledge and appreciate all of Dylan’s love and support from afar in keeping me afloat. I’m grateful for FaceTime calls and texting conversations to keep me company.

      Sarria

      September 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Arrived in Sarria early afternoon, so stopped for a sandwich before checking in. The hotel is towards the end of the city with easy access back onto the Camino.
Again wished I had a longer walk today, but was rewarded with 5 baby kittens and their sweet mama at the hostel.

Staying at the Sleeping Sarria Hostel, nice comfortable bedroom with huge private bath across the room. Nice people.

Just had a nice dinner with Kelly and Juan from Elk Grove. They started at O Cebrero, 2 days ago, and have the same itinerary as I, so will probably see them sooner or later, but have plans for dinner with them in Santiago.
