      Arzŭa-Lavacolla 29 km

      July 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Etter 30 km i går gruet vi oss til nye 29 km i dag. Ikke fullt så kupert i dag, men seige stigninger siste timen tok ut det meste av energien samt 27 grader, skyfri himmel. Alt i alt så gikk det bedre enn forventet.

Mange mennesker i dag.

      We have made it!

      October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

What a day of adventure and emotions!
After an amazing breakfast of cereal fruit yoghurt and the beautiful local cheese and quince paste we set off in the wind rain and dark! I had 2 layers of ponchos on and looked like a bag lady!
But all we had was only 1 job to do today and that was to.put one foot in front of the other for 20 km.
How proud were we of the team of eight plodding on in the dark, torrential rain and rivers of water coming down the paths. I am sure the walk was pretty, but concentration was required to stop us completely tipping over in the mud and slush.
Given all that , there was such an exuberant atmosphere of all the pilgrims, some of which we have traveled with from the beginning ,knowing the end was near.
On we squelched with a coffee stop and then an
early lunch break 5 km away from the Cathedral. By then the rain had stopped and even some sun . We could see the spires in the distance of the Cathedral and it was all pretty exciting.
I looked down at my shoes with splits down the sides and was so happy I never have to put them on again!
On we walked and the crowd of pilgrims seemed to increase but the buzz was amazing. On the way in there were Mat and Tass and so excited to see us, plus many other familiar faces.
Finally we walked through a tunnel and came out into the square with the mighty Compestella Santiago before us. We had made it after 37 days and 780 km of walking.
What an adventure and Brian and I couldn't think of better friends then Jane and Lee to have walked the Camino with. Lots of fun and we were just the best team.
How proud Jack would have been of us walking the Frances Camino at our own medium pace and he would have said "whoa you did it!"
I may have to write a final blog tomorrow to sign off but now it's time to explore Santiago. Don't think I will be eating the octopus!

      Amenal

      June 12 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Day 41 Amenal
Distance from Ribadiso to Amenal 29kms

      Into the home stretch.
We have been walking for 6 weeks and on average a half marathon every day.
The end is in sight (well almost) with the last 15kms to Santiago tomorrow. It’s a surreal feeling and one we will relish having walked day after day week after week and realised a dream.
Today has been long but an easy walk cloudy for the most part with a light breeze to keep us cool. The terrain has been much the same as yesterday and as we draw closer to the big city we have started to loose the rural feel and the sights which we have both loved. We crossed over highways and onto forest paths through small towns passed by large vegetable gardens and
reached our destination for the night in a quiet hamlet for the last time.
May tomorrow bring us joy satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment.
      Buen Camino

      Santiago de Compostela

      August 13 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Checked out of my room because I had reserved only 1 night. I requested to extend by 1 night, but I didn't get a response. A young clerk phoned a taxi for me which took about 30 minutes. I got to my new room, but there was no way to get in (apartment building) and check-in wasn't until 3pm. Fortunately, a resident left the building and I snuck my bags in. I walked to the core of Santiago in weather that was grey and drizzling. There were lots of tourists. I spent the entire day wandering around the old streets. At 6:30, I hobbled to my rental. Of course, my luck, there was a message from my previous hostel saying that I could stay another night!!Read more

      One final word

      September 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I couldn't end this trip without expressing gratitude. God has been with us every step of the way. Literally.
In every smile, every act of kindness, in the beauty of nature, in the gifts from our angels, in the Cafe con Leche , in the gift of your prayers. We are sorry for the rain falling on the Pilgrims today, but it is a gift to the people of Portugal as the fires die. I thank God for my new friends, my old friends, my precious family, my Greg. God truly is everywhere, in all things. We only have to open our eyes and take the time To experience God's presence. I say goodbye to many things and hello to many more. I know not what Iies around the bend but I know God is with me and there will be fellow travelers to share the journey. And, I know when we reach the end of this road there is a whole new beautiful adventure awaiting us all!! Gracias a Dios y buen Camino.
I will see you on the road!!

      Destination-Santiago

      October 2 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

We woke today to rain, rain and more rain. It took all of 30 minutes back on the trail for us to become soaked to the bone. Despite rain jackets and pack rain covers everything was soaked through. There were areas of the trail where you were forced to walk through puddles of mud and mucky water. Our shoes and socks were soaked through in no time. Despite all of this, I was never cold. After 8-9 miles we finally made it! The anticipation seeing a portion of the cathedral grew larger the closer we got. It was beyond words. Pictures do not show its true magnificence. It was great to see some familiar faces also standing in awe. There was laughter, tears, hugs, pictures and many different emotions for many. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity and would run to sign back up again.Read more

    • Simetimes you just sit , sometimes think

      October 8, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

That's me at what must be the quietest airport in Europe anyway just a couple of hours to put in now . I can't begin to describe my experience over the last month and I'm not going to try now . I think I'd like to get home to Kim and the family process it all and maybe write a little more in a few days but for now this will be my last post barring a hijacking to Cuba or the likes . Actually it would be remiss of me not to thank everyone for all the support love advice and long arm fellowship you awarded me along the way it was so important and so enhancing of the whole experience .Thank you all . And finally I have to mention the many fellow walker's who give freely of friendship love and aid when needed and A special thanks to my Camino Family who made my last few weeks laughter filled and moving and poignant at times Adiós AmigosRead more

      To Salceda and San Paio

      October 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

      October 10-11

These last two days have been so relaxing - only 13 miles and 10 miles. We kind of laugh that those distances are relaxing, but going up the hills doesn’t really bother us anymore and the surface of the paths in Galicia have been easier on our feet.

These past few days have so many new people on the path, so it is really exciting when you see Camino friends from earlier on the journey. Today, our Switzerland friends (Birgitta, Yolanda, and Anke) stopped to rest at a bar with us. We thought we wouldn’t ever see them again, and we all greeted each other like long lost friends. 💕🙂 We finally got a group picture!

Even though it has been crowded with new pilgrims, we had SO much time to ourselves today walking through the eucalyptus forest and through the deep, worn down trail. We finally caught up with a group of middle school students and one of their teachers. What a joy they were! Some of them practiced their English by asking us questions and they were so excited when we asked if we could take their picture. 🙂

Tonight, we are staying at a place called Last 12K. We are beyond excited to have a comfortable bed and normal pillows. So often, the beds and pillows are hard and quite often, on a double bed, there is only one long pillow! 🙄 That doesn’t work too well for two people. 😂

Tomorrow, we will walk the last 12 kilometers to the Cathedral in Santiago. Hallelujah! We have tired bodies.

Candi and her friends have finished in Santiago and our friend Nika finished today. Our friends Don and Maryann will finish tomorrow, like us. We hope to welcome them as they walk into the square. 🙂

      Heading out of Madrid

      May 1 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

Paul found yet another interesting hotel for us to stay overnight in Madrid. I’m so grateful for his organization and planning!

Decent airport and a great place to walk and walk. But we didn’t get up to 15 miles yet.

Our Camino continues as we head to London, then Portland and integrate the growth and connection into our daily lives
