      Colombo

      January 7 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

      Colombo, Sri Lanka Mar 24th

      March 24 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

Arriving in Colombo, Sri Lanka at 2 pm in the afternoon.
Our excursion today was a Central Colombo Walk. We chose this one because it was a walk through the city to get to see what the city and country is like at the street level. The streets were fairly empty since today was a Lunar Holiday and a national holiday. Many of the shops were closed and no alcohol is served.
We started out in Pettah which is a neighboring suburb of Colombo. It contained the 'Market' which is an area of streets and alleys where all the goods that flow through Sri Lanka are imported, sorted and re-sold for export. Each street contains certain categories of goods. For example there is the gold street, textile, party supplies, electronics, fish, and of course touristy things like knock-off luggage, purses, shirts, shoes, etc. It was interesting and full of a real understanding about the trade of goods through Sri Lanka. There are the 3-wheeled tuk-tuks all over. They are the really cheap local taxis. When we crossed the street our guide said to just walk out slowly and don't make eye contact and they will stop. Well, it does work... If I did this at home I would be in the hospital. And Scott got away from the group for a minute to buy some date bread from a shop. It was really good. I wished we had more time to browse through the shops a little.
Then we walked back toward Colombo and took in all the Buddhist temples, Mosques and old historic buildings that have unfortunately been abandoned or come under disrepair. However some of them have been restored. Sir Lanka has been conquered by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Many of the restored sites are old mansions and government buildings from these nations that took over and build their own government.
Our last stop was the Galle Face Hotel that was build in the Dutch period and converted to a hotel on the water / beach front in 1894. We had a refreshing mock-tail (since no alcohol can be served today) at the hotel on the veranda overlooking the beach.
Then back to the ship for another day in Sri Lanka tomorrow.

      Sri Lanka

      September 11 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Read more

      Colombo - Sri Lanka

      August 26 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Two nights in Colombo were more than enough.
With traffic pollution so thick masks were worn and the general vibe not one we felt we wanted to end Sri Lanka on, we retreated to a little boutique hotel for abit of luxury and a roof top bar * pool with giant tempura prawns.

      Colombo - Stadtbesichtigung

      March 29, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

      - Feucht (knapp 70% Luftfeuchtigkeit)
      - Unmengen an Menschen

      Sri Kailasanathar Swamy Devas Tempel

      February 13, 2022 in Sri Lanka ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

      Colombo, Sri Lanka

      March 13, 2015 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Once more off to watch the elephants but this time in a more civilized way. We took the express train to Pinnawala to an elephant rescue park that takes elephants that have been orphaned or acclimatized to human contact and can't take care of themselves in the wild. There are now about 60 elephants in the area. A few still need to be chained at times but most roam pretty freely around the area as you can see from the herd coming down the street by the restaurant we were eating at to use the river for their daily bath.
We watched the entire herd romp around the river and get their daily socializing done. Some played, some rested and others just would drape their trunk around each other and get close like they were old buddies telling secrets in each others ear.
We, of course, did the same in a restaurant just above the water with about 100 of the folks on the world cruise that we have gotten to know pretty well after being on the boat with some of them for almost 3 months.
The train was built in 1980 but recreated one of the old ones used during the WWII when the Commander of the Asian Command was headquartered just north of where we were. Much nicer then traveling by bus. Sri Lanka has come a long way from the days of the Civil War and terrorist bombings every week or so. It was good to see a country come out of something as bad as they went through with the spirit these people have. We wish them well. It is definitely worth a visit again in a few years to see what has happened.

      Colombo

      March 6, 2015 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

      Colombo, Sri Lanka

      December 20, 2017 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

To round off our travels with my parents in Sri Lanka, we spent a few days in the capital city Colombo. Our major activity here was buying Sri Lanka inspired/themed Christmas presents. We enjoyed a nice farewell meal with my parents at a pizza joint. Whit and I loved our time with my parents in Sri Lanka and we were sad to go our separate ways. While they head back to New Zealand for a summer Christmas, we fly to Switzerland to spend the holidays with our friends and family living abroad.Read more

    • Day 79

      Colombo, Sri Lanka

      March 23, 2014 in Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

28C at 9am and due to rise to 34C. As we left the ship, a group of musicians and dancers were performing for us. They looked very colourful in their costumes. We started with a tour of parts of the city which was run down but very lively. Most of the shops were closed as it was a Sunday but all the local markets were open. We stopped for photographs at some of the more important buildings and then stopped for a tour of the city museum, which contained ancient statues of Buddha, discovered in various parts of the country and items belonging to the last King of Ceylon. We then drove to Independence Square for more photographs and then to a Buddha temple. We stopped for refreshments before continuing along the seafront and promenade, passing some very modern and old hotels and some interesting colonial buildings.Read more
