  • Rates!

    June 24, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

Today was a longer walk than I thought! 16 miles! So hot! So many cornfields! I kept wetting my buff to help with my neck sunburn from the day before and the general heat with no shade. I’m proud of us for finding our way from the coastal to the central, when the way was not always clear. We never got lost! So thankful that beds have been fairly easy to come by! Albergues have not been as full as I expected. Another 10 euros for bed, shower and a place to wash and hang my clothes! We share our room with 4 French people who can not speak ANY English. We mostly play charades to understand each other. This evening we sat at an outdoor picnic table enjoying the cold air and visited with, Alex… another French man, while bats flew overhead!Read more

  • Just keeps getting better.

    June 25, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Not a great sleep for me last night. Too hot, not comfortable, achy. But, we got an early start today to beat the heat and it’s even more beautiful than the other days! First coffee and quiche at a shop across the street and then a cool Misty morning walk! ❤️Read more

  • What happened to our “easy day”?

    June 25, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We were feeling so good this morning with an early start and a cool morning. We were halfway to Barcelos before we knew it! Sooooo, when we saw a special variant path for the Camino that looked like it went through the woods, we went for it! And it did… but it was all uphill and then down hill! 😆 So now our feet and knees are killing ups and we are taking much needed break before we cover the last 3 miles to Barcelos!Read more

  • Barcelos!

    June 25, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Thankfully, we’ve arrived in Barcelos much earlier than our other stays! Beat the heat a bit better! Only thing is that our check-in at the hostel is not until 3pm. So, poor us, we have to wait and have lunch in this perfect picturesque square with covered seating and a fountain flowing in the background! We met up with our Irish friend, McDara, who we first saw in Porto! We are all enjoying rest time until check-in!Read more

  • No alburgue room?… No problem!

    June 25, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

So when we went to check-in at the Barcelos Albergue they had no more beds, unless there were no-shows later in the day. They did offer us mattresses on the floor of an attic alcove with no window…. So hot 🥵! Next, we went to a place practically next door called the Residential 41 and got a room all to oursleves, with “real” beds, our own bathroom AND air conditioning for 42 Euros! What a gift! For dinner we met up with our friend McDara and met a girl from North Carolina, Ellie! (She was at our albergue last night). It was a fun meal!Read more

  • Breakfast in Riberia!

    June 26, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We got another early start today to take advantage of the cool morning. Feels warmer already today! Many people walk to Ponte De Lima from Barcelos. One reason is there aren’t many places to stay between the two. Casa De Fernanda is one and popular, but Andrea emailed two days ago and there’s no availability! She found us a place, though, about 13miles (yesterday was 13.6 for us) from Barcelos, so that seems do-able and is our destination!Read more

  • Casa Sagres Hostel

    June 26, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

Today was a beautiful 16 mile walk. However, whoever said the Portuguese Camino was mostly flat lied! 🤣 Today we walked many hills, past vineyards, farmlands and small towns. There were gifts for the Perigrinos on the side of the road like plums, water and even beer! Many more fountains too! We found there to be far fewer cafes or markets, though. My favorite stop was by an old Roman bridge. It was a beautiful water pool where we dipped our hot swollen feet for a while! I discovered I had the beginnings of a blister on my big toe and was able to bandage it up before it got bad. We are at Casa Sagres Hostel tonight. It’s 28 euros for a bed (top bunks only available), dinner and breakfast!Read more

  • On our way - Ponte De Lima

    June 27, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Here are a couple pics of the amazing bathroom in last nights Hostel! I slept good, after I stole the air conditioner remote from our French “friends”! 🤣. I woke up at one point sweating… they had turned off the air! So I turned it on to 28c which is 80 degrees and then took the remote to bed with me!! Ha ha ha! I can only imagine how hot it was that 80 degrees was cooler! Looking forward to a short walk day with temperatures on the rise! The walk so far has been really pleasant! Most of the walk has been shaded by old rock walls, grape vines or trees!Read more

  • Arrived in Ponte De Lima

    June 27, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

It was a nice short and mostly flat walk to Ponte De Lima! We decided air conditioning was going to be a must and found a guest house, Casa De Travessa, that is rated very high! It’s very cute, very central and the host is very nice! 👍 We walked around a bit and found some lunch! Already 🥵 we’ve decided we might stay a second night, since temperatures are supposed to drop after that by about 10 degrees.Read more

  • Another evening amongst friends

    June 27, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

Ponte de Lima is charming! Bigger, but not really big. When we got back to our wonderfully air conditioned room, I took a nap. We found out that McDarra had stayed an extra day in town and we messaged him to join us for dinner. On our way to find dinner l we ran into Ellie, who had walked an extra long day! So the crew was back together! We also ran into our French “friends” a couple of times!! No mention of the missing air conditioning remote. 😉🫣 Evening was beautiful and the temp is once again bareable, but it makes it hard to call it a night early. Both Ellie and Mcdarra walk on tomorrow, while we take a rest day.Read more

  • Que sera sera

    June 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

No alarm this morning… so nice! Today is really a “whatever will be, will be” day. Felt only a tiny bit guilty watching a few pilgrims leave town and knowing our friends are on their way… but only a TINY bit! We looked at temperatures today and the altitude of “the climb” that is part of the next stage of our walk and… we’re good!👍 How about an after-breakfast nap?! 😁Read more

  • Staying cool!

    June 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

After a bit of meandering through some some riverside gardens and getting lunch, we decided to walk down the other side of the river a bit and do some swimming! After a while, we heard sounds of people and splashing! We have happened upon a hidden from view and obviously not advertised public pool! Only 2 euro and we are in! We scored a cool pool afternoon and a spot in the shade!Read more

  • Best Salmon Ever

    June 28, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Finished off this rest day with a dinner of the best Salmon I’ve ever eaten! Portugal serves huge portions, which is great for our Camino appetites, but I can never finish my plate and there’s no taking it home! It’s 9pm and we just got back from dinner. I’ve still got to check on my laundry that’s air drying, shower and do a little pre-packing!Read more

  • At the foot of “the hill”!

    June 29, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

I started the day a bit rough with diarrhea, but it’s getting better as the morning goes on. I got a walking stick from a small Camino vender on our way out of Ponte De Lima that I hope will be a help on todays climb! It’s supposed to be a very steep 1200 ft climb… and just as steep down the other side! Thankful we are starting it out on rested legs!Read more

  • The top!

    June 29, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Just arrived at the highest point in our climb! A wonderful breeze has accompanied us since we left this morning! It feels amazing! We made the decision yesterday that we would send our packs on ahead of us (for the sake of our knees) just for today! So glad we did! We packed lots of water, snacks, sunscreen and first aid in daypacks and we are good to go! Now we must make our way down, which can sometimes be harder on the body!Read more

  • Albergue in Pacos!

    June 29, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Not only did we have the highest altitude gain on our walk today, but it’s our longest walk at 19.2 miles! Geeesh, we out did ourselves! Thankfully the breeze was with us all day and the weather was a great deal cooler! Our Albergue tonight, Quinta Estrada Romana, is picturesque on the outsside and very cute inside! We pretty much have a whole floor to oursleves and 4 Americans from Minnesota are on the floor below us. I don’t know when our luck will run out with these nice places and not being full, but really enjoying it while it lasts!Read more

  • Walk to Tui (part 1)

    June 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We woke up today to a sweet napkin message from our Minnesota friends. The morning was cool and clear. We decided that today would be a shorter walk (approx 8miles) to Tui. But first, we passed through Valenca, which has a large star shaped fortress! You could look across the river and see Tui! Definitely a highlight! This is also the location of my last Pastella De Nada!Read more

  • Walk to Tui (part 2)

    June 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Next to the Valenca fortress is a bridge and, after a short walk across, we were in Spain! Now my Obrigado must become Grasias and switch my Bom Dia for Buenas Dias! We toured the Tui cathedral which has the largest set of organs I think I’ve ever seen. Luckily, our place to stay allows early check-in at 1pm! Another nice, clean place with bunk beds (top is mine 😁)! Looks like it will be full tonight, although we are first to arrive. We dropped our bags off, got lunch and walked a bit more!Read more

  • Tui (part 3)

    June 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Look who we ran into! Ellie!! We all did a touristy thing and took a tour train/tram ride through Tui and Valenca! Turned into a great opportunity to put my feet up and still see the town! Back in time for some showers before dinner. There’s a 1hr time difference, just since entering Spain that’s throwing us a bit. Evenings are suddenly much cooler too! I might actually use that jacket I’ve been carrying around since Porto! 😆Read more

  • The perfect croissant!

    July 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Another beautiful morning! With Spain being an hour difference we were walking before the sun was up! We walked about 4 miles before we came across the most picturesque cafe! I NEED my breakfast and, since I started my period, I need my drugs, so the this place was heaven sent! And they just happen to have the best croissants EVER! 😋😍Read more

  • Complementario!

    July 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We had some advice early on in our Camino from an albergue host… “always take the Complementario way”! In other words the scenic route! Today it means walking 1km farther, but avoiding an industrial section of the walk! Worth it! Now for a churro and ice tea break!Read more

  • O Porrino

    July 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We arrived at the Alojamiento Alburgue in O Porrino at 12:01! Check in is at noon! 😆 Easy day and our earliest arrival yet! We even stopped by a stream as we entered the city to cool out feet! The poor hostess, Lucy, seemed surprised to see us already, but was very accommodating. We were able to get two bottom bunks! I am, unfortunately, plagued by my period and diarrhea today, so it may taint my opinion a bit, but I’m unimpressed with O Porrino. It’s just a stopping place, but I wouldn’t want to linger. Poor Andrea is out on the hunt for dinner for herself and the Spanish form of Imodium for me. 🫣😣Read more

  • Arrived in Redondela!

    July 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

I had a rough night, but today I feel better. I started off with just a yogurt for breakfast, then a banana for snack and for lunch I had to get the Risotto! I’m hoping the Imodium is working! Today was only 10 miles, but OY-VEY the hills!!Many more walkers today. A few are always in sight! We walked with Rebecca from Hungary for a long time! Redondela is a city where the Coastal way joins, so even more walkers and more of a challenge getting a place to stay! We found a nice one, though, for 14 euros! Now for that shower! 🚿 🥰Read more

  • Feeling better!

    July 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

As the day has gone on I’ve been able to eat with no repercussions! This is good news, since I’m surrounded by delicious looking food! 😆 Not to mention it helps my Camino! Praying this continues through tonight. I had a choco-cream puff (couldn’t resist), we saw a portion of the Berlin Wall that was given to Spain, and here’s a picture of all the shoes of the pilgrims at this albergue!Read more

  • Top of yet another climb!

    July 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

It’s another pleasant day to walk! Feeling much better today! On the way out of Redondela, we met Andrea from Portland who is also a teacher! 😄 I loved the walk through Arcade… although very hilly! And it’s been a steady climb ever since! Love the shaded trail that goes by creeks and has old Roman road stones still in place! Stopped at the top at a vendor for pilgrims and got a fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade! Letting the feet get some air and then we start a steady descent.Read more
