    Leaving for TRT tomorrow

    September 6, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I should be in South Lake Tahoe by 2PM Pacific Time, if the rain in Boston doesn't delay my flight. Right now I'm trying to remember how to use this travel blog. I'll send out a link to the regular followers. I'll be in sunny California, so the pictures should be nice.Read more

Sitting on 5 hour 45 minute flight to the San Francisco connection to Reno. I'll catch up on my sleep for sure. With the time change I end up at Reno at noon. Looking forward to something interesting to talk about.Read more

  • Reno Airport

    September 7, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Sorry, just another footprint to register. I want to see the zig zag route I took to get to Tahoe. West, then east, then south. I missed the bus by 2 minutes, so I'm waiting 2.5 hours for the next one. Ya think I'm bored?Read more

  • Montbleu Casino and Hotel

    September 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I stayed here last night and got out at 8am to hike. 4 miles uphill to reach the trail. When I got to South Lake Tahoe, I met up with Janine and Michael for dinner. It was great because I just spent 18 hours traveling. They offered to bring me to the trailhead, but I decided to walk. Cheesy casino hotel. The room was nice, but slot machines everywhere.Read more

  • First day done early.

    September 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Well.. the first day. As I mentioned, I hiked 4 miles uphill to reach the TRT. I started on my journey at around 10:30, and all was well. A young guy was hiking towards me, so I asked if he was hiking the whole trail. He said yep. Counterclockwise? He said, No, clockwise. I informed him he was going the wrong way. He turned around and we hiked together all day. Colin from Oregon. Nice kid, like most on the trail. We reached Star Lake where I was going to stop for the night. 14 miles with 3k elevation gain was enough for one day. As soon as we found a suitable spot to put up tents, it started to hail. We hunkered under trees until it simmered down. I got my tent up just before the hail came back. Warm and dry now. Colin moved on. Fast hiker. I won't see him again.Read more

  • Big Meadow

    September 10, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

This is the end of day two. I didn't plan it but hiked 15 miles. That seems to be the average around here. I met a guy from Seattle, Perry, about my age, retired from Starbucks Corporate. He started working with them when they were just a small company. Anyway I hiked with him all day, and all day we passed runners doing the Tahoe 200 Trail Race. Yep, that 200 is the milage. They were at about 80 miles at that point. That slowed us up because I ended up talking to a lot of them. We reached Big Meadow late in the afternoon,. and just pull into the woods to camp.Read more

  • Shower Lake

    September 10, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Perry and I got up as soon as we saw sunlight. My tent and sleeping bag got wet from condensation, so I was taking longer to pack up. He left ahead of me with a plan for me to catch up when he took a long lunch. I get going and before long I came across Colin going the wrong way again. He said he had to get back home for some emergency. I wished him luck and hiked on. I got to the juncture where the Pacific Crest Trail meets the TRT, and went the wrong way. Long story, but some PCT kids set me straight. I kept hiking realizing I wasn't going to catch Perry. I got over it quickly and went back to hiking my own hike. I ended today early with 8 or so miles and decided I like Shower Lake. I took a swim... A little cool, and got a nice picture to send. Yes, it's real. The first picture is Shower Lake. The second is just a sample of the scenery I've been looking at all day.Read more

  • Lake Aloha

    September 12, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Ok, This was the last picture I got before my battery got low. I explained this spot already. Google it. Everyone talked about this place, but I found the terrain and lakes before and after Dick's Pass much nicer. Around the thunderstorms I saw the most beautiful terrain early in morning. I got pictures and videos on my real camera, so all is not lost.Read more

  • Dick's Lake

    September 13, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Sorry, my phone battery got weak, so I had to hold off on sending out posts. I'll do some catch up now. I had a perfect camping night at Shower Lake, then headed deeper into Desolation Wilderness towards Lake Aloha. It was kind of a tough hike, and longer than I thought it would take. I fell short and landed at a small lake called Tamarack. I setup my tent and got my dinner ready just as the thunderstorm hit. Lots of lightening too. I was dry in my tent, and just fell asleep..I was tired. The storm hung out for a couple of hours and move on, so it was sunny the next day. I hiked by Lake Aloha in the morning with beautiful sunshine. I didn't hang too long because I had to get over Dick's Pass before the afternoon storms arrived. I barely got over it when the rain and hail started. I hiked 2 miles to Dick's Lake. Big thunder and lightning that afternoon. I managed to get my tent up without getting too wet. I liked it there the next morning when the sun came out.Read more

  • Tahoe City

    September 14, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

I'm losing track. After staying at Dick's Lake, I headed on to Richardson's Lake. I realized as I moved on that I had passed the best section of Desolation Wilderness. I stopped there partly because the storms were approaching. I wasn't tired, and should have moved on, but the water sources weren't easy to find. I was bored and decided to just b-line it to Tahoe City, 24 miles ahead. That's unheard of in New England, but very doable in these mountains. I climbed over Barker Pass by the morning, and had generally downhill hiking from there. I made it here by 3pm. Nice little town right on the lake. I picked up my resupply package at the sporting goods store, and checked into the hotel. Got a hiker rate. Real cheap. Having breakfast and should be back on the trail by 8:30. Lots of climbing to get 13 miles done. That's Watson Lake, the next water source. Batteries are charged.Read more

  • View of Lake Tahoe

    September 16, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

I've been looking for a great view of the lake for two days. Unfortunately it has been hazy the whole time. Some of it may be smoke from the Oregon fires. The trail has been dull up to now, so I started early this morning to get a sunrise, if I get lucky. I got lucky. Cold this morning with frost in the medows. Moving on. I probably have 5 days left at this pace.Read more

  • Gray Lake

    September 16, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

I had to stop here because it is the only water source for 20 miles. Did 17 today, mostly uphill. Kind of tired. The views got better. A couple of more big climbs tomorrow then it eases up for the rest of the journey. That's Lake Tahoe from the north side. I'm in Nevada now.Read more

  • Mt. Rose Campground

    September 17, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This is a car camping site that is closed for the season. I moved in anyway. I got here at around 2;30 after a lot of climbing in the Mt.Rose Wilderness Area. Great day to hike and enjoy the views all around. This picture is from the top of Relay Peak at 10300 feet. I think it is the tallest point of the TRT. I'm used to the elevations now, so it was no problem. Not much left to see, so I'm hustling to finish up. About 40 miles to go.Read more

  • Above Spooner Summit

    September 19, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Just took this picture a few minutes ago. It's been real windy since yesterday, but that's good. It cleared the lake, so I could get the pictures I wanted. I've got 4 miles to a campsite for my last night. I cruise into Stateline tommorow. These other pictures were from early this morning. Early morning hiking is the best time for pictures. I was hiking through those mountains on the other side of the lake last week.Read more

  • Finish Line

    September 20, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Right now I'm settled in at the bar at the Montbleu Casino hotel sipping a local beer. Lot different from being out in the woods. My last night went fine. It remained sunny until.the sun went down. I found a camp spot out of the wind for the night, and only ten miles to the finish line. Still had 3 miles to get into town, but it was mostly downhill. Still haven't taken a shower. I needed this beer first.Read more

  • Snow!

    September 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

I've been hunkered down in this hotel since Wednesday night, because I was running early on my hike. It took 13 days, not the 14 I expected. I can't believe my luck. It snowed in the mountains on Wednesday night, off and on yesterday, and last night also. I know there must be a lot more in the elevations. There are hikers up there still. I would not have been a happy camper.Read more
