      1.den jez.Derborence - Cabane Rambert

      July 12, 2021 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Stoupání 1328 m
      Klesání 245 m
      Délka 11,3 km
      8.40 - 16.00
      Polojasno

Zdolali jsme sedlo Col de La Forcia 2541m , pak sedýlko pod chatou Rambert, a nakonec vytoužená chata Rambert 2582m.

      July 14, 2021 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Stoupání 200 m
      Klesání 1330 m
      Trasa 7 km
      8.15 - 15.30

Dnešní etapa měla mít 16 km, nastoupat 1000m a sklesat 2000m.
Adam má v Sionu kamaráda, ten by mohl pomoci!
Z Dorénazu jsme došli pěšky (asi 2km) do Vernayaz. My zůstali ve vlaku a co čert nechtěl, přišel průvodčí, a to už jsme vyjížděli do naší cílové zastávky.

      Cesta do Sionu

      July 11, 2021 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more

      Verbier, Switzerland

      February 3, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ -2 °C

Friends we made in Vietnam, Eddy and Inga, work at the famous Swiss ski resort, Verbier. They invited us to come stay in the lodging above the bar they are working at so we jumped at the offer. Our Australian friend Adam is working in England so he joined us for a weekend of snowboarding and fun. When we arrived, Andreas and I were both blown away by the quaint beauty of this snowy village among the Swiss alps. The first night we went out to ‘Apre Ski,’ basically drinks after a hard day of skiing. We danced the night away to a band in a packed bar and were glad to have our snow jackets as the done thing is to spray your beer over the crowd (no idea why).

We woke up to a snow storm so we decided to go sledding. Now this isn’t ordinary sledding. You take the gondola up and sled down a 40 min run similar to a ski slope. It gets wild! This is unfortunately why I had my accident and hurt my knee. However, I think it was worth it because the run before I injured myself I told Andreas “my happiness levels are maxed out!” On the positive, I got to ride down in a medic toboggan and on a snow mobile. Diagnosis: partially torn MCL, stretched ACL, and bruised bone. I have to wear a hinged brace for a while and then it should be ok.

Andreas, Adam, and Eddy went up snowboarding the next two days. I was jealous as it was blue bird skies with perfect powder. Needless to say, they had an awesome time. I still rode the gondola all the way to the top, drank hot chocolate, and threw a few snowballs. Verbier kicked my butt physically but it was still a weekend we will always remember. We will be back for you Verbier!!

      Nendaz ⛷

      March 21, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

The best thing about starting our Europe trip at the end of Winter is we caught the end of the ski season… John’s Auntie & Uncle have a chalet above Nendaz and insisted we go. We didn’t need persuading!

The most gorgeous slice of mountain paradise awaited us, it was Dan’s first Europe ski trip and boy was he impressed….not by the snow (it hadn’t snowed for a few months) but by the vibrant European culture of 10am beers and long boozey lunches on the slopes in 15 degree sunshine… heaven. We bought a 4 valleys lift pass and made our way over to Verbier each day for a bit more variety.

Nothing beats a March bluebird (aprés) ski trip in the Swiss Alps! ⛷

      Sun-Kissed Sion

      September 17, 2018 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Sion is in a valley of vineyards and fruit orchards. It is recognizable from a distance by the two castles on hills overlooking the old town.

The old town is fun to walk around. The 17th Century town hall has an astronomical clock in the tower. Beyond the city streets you can see the vineyards that surround the city.Read more

      Rendezvous in Switzerland

      July 31, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

While skiing in the Sierra Nevada a couple of years ago, we met fellow Brits Michelle and Shaun on a ski lift. It turned out that we were all staying in the same hotel and so we spent a few days skiing together. They own a chalet in La Tzoumaz, Switzerland where they spend some time in the summer and asked us if we wanted to join them and friends Bob & Diane there. How could we refuse.

At the French/Swiss border we had to stop and purchase a vignette for the motorhome and trailer to allow us to use the Swiss motorways. From there, we passed Lake Geneva and headed south to Martigny and then east along the Rhone Valley floor before the zigzag climb up the mountain to La Tzoumaz at 1500m.

We all marvelled at the stunning mountain views before us from the chalet balcony as we settled in to our new environment, with the motorhome and trailer parked next door as we couldn't get them onto their drive!

Next day, we took the ski lift higher up the mountain then down into Verbier, walked through the town and then took a series of lifts as high as we could go at 3360m for stunning panoramic views. The return journey included a walk with a picnic lunch en route watching fearless mountain bikers descend the cycle tracks at high speed, as paragilders soared around us.

We loved the idea of descending the mountain at speed on a bike but no longer have the fearlessness of youth to do it. The solution was to 'trottinette' down instead. A trottinette is a mountain-style bicycle that has no seat, gears or pedals that you stand on and is designed just for going downhill. It's basically a cross between a bike and a scooter with very good brakes, and is great fun. It took us an hour to descend following the designated route and, after a tentative and steep start, we could have gone straight back up and done all over again.

After all the activity of walking and biking, when Michelle suggested a day at a local spa, some of us couldn't resist. The setting in the bottom of the valley was breathtaking as the lazy river current took us on a meandering journey before we headed over to the sauna and steam room and then into the outdoor and indoor jacuzzi pools. By the time we returned, we were so clean that we didn't need to shower for another week!

Our time together included watching magnificent fireworks in Martigny to celebrate Swiss National Day, a visit to the town of Sion and a boat ride on Europe's largest underground lake.

Evenings were spent enjoying Shaun's cooking and then relaxing or playing table games.

Michelle and Shaun were great hosts and we are very grateful that they shared their Swiss escape with us. It was a real treat to be in the mountains in the summer, rather than skiing in the winter, and we fell in love with it.

      Notre-Dame de Montorge

      July 27, 2017 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Then it was onto Sion. It’s known for 2 hilltop fortifications: the 13th-century Tourbillon Castle ruins and the Valère Castle complex, with a basilica housing an organ over 500 years old. The 15th-century Cathedral of Notre-Dame-du-Glarier and the conical Witches’ Tower are in the old town.

When we arrived we walked/hiked up to a 792m hilltop overlooking the airport and city. On it was the ruins of an old fort called Notre-Dame de Montorge.
