  • Breakfast at Sherman Tree

    12 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We woke up early to try and time a road closure issue - but that ended up being no big deal. Still, the kids were great about packing up fast and waiting to eat breakfast until after we arrived at our next walk.

    Things we learned:
    - Grey water tanks need to be emptied
    - Grey water tanks can be emptied almost anywhere (if no one is looking)

    Things we haven't used YET
    - Pee cup

  • Driving around the Sierras

    12 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

First off - thank goodness for the wonderful ranger we met in the foothills visitor center as we descended out of Sequoia. I wanted to ask for advice about taking the Sherman Pass road over the southern end of the range. The first two rangers I asked at the desk said they weren't sure - but why not try. Not really satisfied I noticed there was an old guy with a white beard. He had been over the road and said it must' much fun and wasn't very scenic. Over the next few days others confirmed this would have not been fun.

The kids and I were chatting after about the importance of asking older folks who know, when Samantha said (direct quote) "Never trust anyone under 30". Take that baby-boomers! I told her about the 60's inverse of that and she said "why would anyone say that?!?"

He said we should check out Mt. Whitney - another huge favor he did us as it turns out. The pics here are just what the kids slept through or watched as we listened to The Sword of Shanara on the stereo.

  • Lone Pine to Mt. Whitney

    12 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We pulled in to the moderately prosperous town of Lone Pine to gather supplies and stretch our legs. We then turned west and went through some remarkable rock formations on our way up the campground that serves as a staging area for those attempting to summit the tallest mountain in the lower 48.

We were lucky and got a great campsite right away.

The long shot down to the valley is from our drive out the next day. But that's Lone Pine down in the valley. The campsite itself is at about 8300 ft.

  • Gondola to the summit

    14 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We decided to take the Gondola to the top - 10,048 ft! I asked the lift attendant what the easiest way down was. He rolled his eyes and said (for the millionth time) "There is no easy way down. Experts only". I rolled my eyes right back and said only "Nevertheless...". He blinked first and said "Cornice Bowl". Ha! Score one for the newbies!

This is a double black diamond but the snow was nice and mushy. Over two days we probably skied it 16 times. It was our main run.

  • Full disclosure

    14 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We did stop off at a local campground for a nice hot shower - our first since San Diego. At least I *think* I showered in San Diego.

In my defense - Daddy Camp usually features lots of swimming to keep clean - but with all the rain this winter, the swimming holes I'd found online were all too raging with whitewater for a safe swim.Leggi altro

  • Fishing on Lake George

    15 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Having had no luck casting from shore, we headed out to deeper waters. The kids took turns driving and casting. Oh - and for the record - not even a nibble! But it was great!

  • Off to Yosemite and another bear!

    16 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

For the 3rd day in a row we got up at 6:30 am. The previous two were to ski. This one was to get to a campsite in time to get a site.

We came in from the east via the Tioga Pass and discovered that the Tuolumne Meadows campground was still closed because of flooding.

So - the ranger at the gate suggested we try Tamarack Flats.

In hindsight I think we got quite lucky - but we managed to get a great spot - though Franklin noted it was right in a mountain lion's kill box (under a large rock)! We were also told there was a very active bear in the area that had climbed a tree right next to our site. However - the bear didn't stop by during our trip. The ranger said that it might come sniffing around the van but as soon as we woke up and made noise it would leave. We also met a woman on the "bear team" from the department of fish and wildlife who was there to deal with the bear. She looked super tough!

Oh - and we saw another bear!!! This one was right at the top of the access road to the campground - about three miles from the campground. We love bears!

  • Down in the valley

    16 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We headed down to the valley even though it was a Sunday. It was pretty busy but we found a good parking spot and walked over to Yosemite Village. We ended up taking the shuttle to Half Dome Village for lunch and to investigate bike and/or boat rentals but we agreed the prices were high for what you get.

Samantha did achieve an important life goal however of hugging a bear and surviving!

  • Swimming in the Merced

    16 luglio 2017, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

After lunch we walked around and then wandered over to the river for a swim. The water was COLD and I was quite nervous about the strong current we watched one adult almost drown! She tried to swim across to her friend and turned around about 2/3 of the way across and barely made it back. There were lots of people and those closer moved in to help her.

After these pics we put on our life jackets and went a bit deep, including a short float in the current, but I didn't feel I could hold onto both of them and swim to shore very well so that was that. Still it was very refreshing and beautiful.
