Wat Paknam wurde bereits während der Ayutthaya-Periode – zwischen 1488 und 1630 – erbaut. König Rama III. ließ ihn renovieren und verlieh ihm dann den Status „Königlicher Tempel Dritter Klasse“. König Mongkut ließ an der Mündung des Khlong Phasi Charoen, der den Mae Nam Tha Chin (Tha-Chin-Fluss) über den Khlong Bangkok Yai mit dem Mae Nam Chao Phraya verbindet, direkt am Tempel eine Zollstation erbauen. Seitdem nennen Einheimische den Tempel Wat Paknam, was „Tempel an der Mündung des Flusses“ bedeutet. Der Hauptanziehungspunkt ist natürlich der Goldene Buddha. Er ist 69 Meter hoch und 32 Meter breit und wiegt 250 Tonnen. Es handelt sich um eine der größten Buddha-Statuen der Welt. Aber weil der Tempel etwas außerhalb des Zentrum ist, sind hier nicht die Massen an Touristen.
Wat Paknam was built during the Ayutthaya period - between 1488 and 1630. King Rama III had it renovated and then gave it the status of “Third Class Royal Temple”.
