    1. Day Mersin I

    August 22, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

I know, I'm late. Meanwhile 3 days, we are currently in Cyprus and leave today for Nicosia for 7 days, hope to catch up in time and be back up to date for you.

Arriving in Mersin, we took bus number 11 to go to Pocso. What surprised us was that it is a very lively neighbourhood and that you can find many bars and restaurants there.

After arriving at our accommodation, we visited the Archaeological Museum to learn more about the city.

Afterwards we went to the sea and had a look at the promenade and walked back to our neighbourhood and sat down in a very trendy bar. Afterwards we went to eat Tantuni, unfortunately I was already so drunk that I forgot to take pictures. :)

  • 2. Day Mersin (Corycian Caves) I

    August 23, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

On our last day in Mersin and also on the Turkish mainland, we really wanted to see 3 sights, so we rented a small automatic car from Garenta, which cost us about 40 € without petrol.

After picking up the car in the morning, we drove to the Corycian Caves and had a look at everything.

It was an incredible experience, unfortunately the pictures cannot convey what we saw.

  • 2. Day Mersin (Corycian Caves) III

    August 23, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The Corykian Caves are two collapse dolines in Cilicia. They are located near Narlıkuyu on Turkey's southern coast, east of Silifke in Mersin province. They are named after the nearby ancient city of Korykos, now Kızkalesi, their Turkish name is Cennet ve Cehennem (Heaven and Hell), the ancient name is Korykion Antron.

The caves owe their existence to an underground river that also flows underground into the Mediterranean at Narlikuyu. It formed a cave system in the karst, the ceiling of which collapsed, forming the two sinkholes.

Next Trip on the day Kizkalesi Castle ;)

  • 2. Day Mersin (Kizkalesi)

    August 23, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After we had been to the Corycian Caves, we drove past Kizkalesi on the way back, actually we wanted to visit the castle in the middle of the sea, but unfortunately the ferries left very irregularly and we didn't have much time, so we visited the castle directly on the beach. Unfortunately, it was no longer completely open to visitors.

Kızkalesi is located on the site of the ancient Korykos. In the village, the castle, also called Korykos, and the girl's castle (Turkish: Kız Kalesi) on an offshore island, the landmark of the village, have been preserved. The castle takes its name from the legend that a local ruler brought his daughter there after prophesying that she would die of a snake bite. The snake got her anyway via a food basket.

  • 2. Day Mersin (Adamkayalar)

    August 23, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Our last stop was the Men of Rock. For this we had to drive about 10 kilometres up a mountain and then another 2-3 kilometres through roads that were difficult to access. It was very exciting and definitely worth it, the view alone was breathtaking. Unfortunately, we were not able to see the reliefs from close up.

The Adamkayalar (Turkish for human rock) are Roman tomb reliefs in Cilicia. They are located near the ancient Korykos near the present-day village of Kızkalesi.

About eight kilometres north of Kızkalesi, in the steep, almost vertical walls of the Şeytan Deresi (Devil's Valley), several Roman family tombs carved into the rock with thirteen associated reliefs lie in a place that is difficult to access. They are dated to the 2nd to 1st century BC.

At the upper edge of the gorge, the ruins of several buildings, sarcophagi and a cistern can be seen. The populated hilltop of about 100 metres in diameter is surrounded by a polygonal defence wall up to the edge of the gorge. Crosses can be seen on some of the buildings. Based on the masonry technique, the settlement can be dated from Hellenistic to early Byzantine times.

  • 2. Day Mersin (Departure to Aggia Nappa)

    August 23, 2022 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After all the day's adventures and dropping off the rental car, we went to the port and picked up our tickets to Famagusta (Turkish: Gazimagusa) in Northern Cyprus. The tickets cost us a total of €62 for two people with the provider Akgünler. The crossing took 10 hours plus 2 hours delay. It has to be said that it was not a ferry but rather a freight ferry. Not for everyone and not comfortable at all. Nevertheless, it was an experience and we were very happy to finally arrive in Cyprus.Read more
