    Historiska Museet

    July 2, 2018 in Sweden ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

At this museum we concentrated on two areas, the Gulddrummet (Gold Room) and the history of the Vikings. The period between AD 800 and AD 1050 is traditionally known as the Viking age. The stereotypical legends of violent warriors pillaging and raiding neighbouring lands to the east and west are familiar around the world, but the reality was quite different. Few of the people of that era were actually stereotypical Vikings. For most Scandanavians, life centred on farming, and the communities around them. For the people in the North, hunting and trading furs provided the opportunity to have contact with people from the South.

Only a small group ventured abroad to trade, and sometimes to pillage, and they would return home with new customs and practices and artefacts that influenced and changed daily life.

The gold room contained many gold artefacts, and there is a total of 53kg of gold in the room in total.
