    The finaly day

    Leaving Karsruhe quiet on time, I headed further north to Mainz and Frankfurt.
    I stopped in Frankurt for a nice lunch break. Before getting home, I stopped at the trusted Fressnapf and got some Torgas Roots for Ambra and Ole and arrived at around 6 pm.
    Being on the go for almost 4 weeks.
    6990 km
    6 ferries
    1 week on a sailing yacht
    Hopping 8 islands
    Crossing 9 countries
    I have not counted the number of charges.

    But I understood that this roadtrip was worth every single minute.
    I got back happy and full of impressions and experiences.

    I wish to do this again very soon, maybe with an e-Motorbike? :)    Les mer

    Passing the beautiful Swiss

    From Milano I continued my journey home passing Swiss. I had to get the vigniette and luckily crossed the boarder without being checked :) Well nothing serious since I was crossing Swiss anyway only. But having some declarable goods on board would be probably nothing funny. Because of a huge traffic jam on the highway, googlemaps offered an alternative route via the epic Gotthard Pass. Luckily I accepted and did not follow my normal behaviour to stay on the highway. Incredible impressive scenery.
    Worth to mention, the incredible charging infrastructure in Swiss. Literally every rest area has a charging station and quiet a number of IONITY charger.
    I stopped to see a friend in Lucern, had dinner there and then continued towards Germany and stopped for another night in a hotel in Karsruhe.    Les mer

    Milano

    Since I was already in Milano, I had to explore the city. For the 3 hours I was there, I experienced a lot.
    Found a charging station. Got through the chaos of the traffic. Saw a FFF demonstration. :)
    Went to the epic Apple Store and did other sightseeing.
    Oh and there was the Fashion Week in Milano :D    Les mer

    Italy

    24 hours, later, 23 hours according to timeline change..
    Before leaving the boat, there was one more challenge. Finding the car. Because of all the stress with the tight parking, I completely forgot to remember where I parked. I had a feeling it was level one. But I was not sure, And was it part 1 or 2? Shoot, I talked with one of the guys I met on board and also double checked with the reception and reflected where I came from, First try - correct. Lucky me :)
    I arrived in Ancona Italy. Finding a charging station first.
    There they also had a quiet good rest area with lots of veggies.
    And then I had to make a decision, drive though Austria, Swiss or make another detour. Hard question.
    Finally made the decision to drive though Swiss and that was the right decision.
    But first, Stopping in Milan. Found a hotel on booking.com incredibly expensive but it was supposed to have a charging station. In fact it had two, but when arrived, I found out that they only have one special cable for 1 of 2 stations and that was in use. The other stations was blocked by non EVs. I need to mention that I noted in my booking that I need to charge the car. Service level 0.    Les mer

    24 hours on the ferry

    With a cabin, everything is so much nice, because you have this personal area where you can always can get back to, leave your stuff and relax.
    Honestly, the first hours you wonder what to do with all the 24 hours, but after a while you come down relax and start reading, enjoying the sun on deck or look at people or just look at the sea.
    It is perfect to relax.
    Now I kind of understand why people like cruises its a limited space where you have to relax - however looking at the exhausts is disgusting. Really    Les mer

    Leaving Athens

    Actually I wanted to go for a run outside or on the treadmill in the morning and then slowly getting ready to go - no run though. But then my uncle called and wanted to come over for a last coffee. So nice, just for 40 mins or so taking all the long way. It was worth it and I was so happy to see them once again and say bye bye. The drive to Patras then could have been super relaxing, but I needed to pass by my other cousin and hand over the keys to his apartment - that took longer than expected and so I started with a delay of 45 mins + the need to charge the car prior embarkation - well i did not.
    Passed through Greece towards Patras and honestly this scenery is breathtaking. Absolutely amazing how impressive the country is on that side. Huge mountains close to the coast fantastic. Arrived in Patras I had to collect the tickets - only checking is not possible for international routes.
    When arriving at the port, it was quiet tricky to find the right gate and I was quiet early. Not recommend. They put us all down to deck 1, the lowest one. See the video, quiet tight.

    Sightseeing Athens

    I just need to go to Acropolis every time am in Athens. It’s just so nice to walk this roots where the foundation of the world we live in where initiated. This time I was very lucky with the timing. I could see how soldiers take down the Greek flag and also enjoy the sunset.
    And then after leaving the Acropolis down to Monastiraki, there was this street musician - amazing. Listen..

    Bottom line, being back in the metropolitan area is nice, but the islands were just NICER!    Les mer

    Kos to Athens

    Right, I was quiet optimistic, that I would be able to get a bed on the ferry. Remember, on the inbound drive, I could last minute book one onsite. This time I was even better prepared to remediate my initial mistake of booking a ferry without a cabin. But no.. No rooms available I was told.
    Well, I wanted to accept it. During the time onboard I spent a lot of time walking around, and since space is limited, I passed by the reception quiet often. Surprisingly every time I passed, it seemed like another room was given to a passenger last minute.
    Meanwhile chilling out on deck - trying to make myself as much as possible comfortable, looking at the stars or enjoying to fresh breeze. I gave up my booked airplane like seat hours ago. Just chaotic. Nobody follows seat reservations and everything the ferry stopped at another port, people came in and discussion or fights about seats started. After I fall as sleep and then woke up because of the fights I gave up the seat. Quiet upset I went to the reception and jelled at the guys there - still friendly but made my point clear. Funny thing, only the people boarded at the last port will get potentially available cabin. I tried to understand that logic while trying to sleep, got woke up by crew members who told me / us that we are not allowed to sleep here and there fall asleep again and eventually arrived in Athens.
    Lessons learned, 8 hours + ferry journey only with a cabin.    Les mer

    The day of leaving the Greek Islands

    The last day on Kos I walked around the town Center, chilled out at the beach and eventually gave back the rented Scooter. Actually nothing worth mentioning, but overall a quiet good last day - considering that the leaving day, even though ferry was scheduled for the evening, is usually difficult to fill with activities.
    Anyways, said good bye to the people I learned to like there and also had finally some proper Greek food on Kos.

    And I am alone on Kos again

    What a fantastic week, so many things happened, so much experience gained, so much learned.
    After the guys leaving i decided to go back to my favourite hotel and - so nice - they gave me early checkin again :)
    After shower and relaxing, I rented a scooter and discovered the island. Finding a scooter with a proper engine was not that easy.. and I was almost willing to take a smaller engine, but then I found one. Quiet nice to discover the island, and I did a round trip of about 50 ish km. Bottom line tough, Kos is not my favourite - I am so happy that we were able to discover traditional islands this summer.    Les mer

    Last day offshore

    After topping up fuel and getting some bottles of water and so, we chilled a bit close to the Marina of Kos. That was indeed a good idea, because the queue at the petrol station got longer and longer over time and you definitely do not want to waste hours of the last days queuing for petrol. Lessons learned :)
    When arrived at the Marina, the “checkout” was quiet smooth. Nothing broken, nothing to complain about from the charter company. FYI, even though checkout done in the afternoon, you can stay and sleep on board until Saturday 9 am.    Les mer

    The Vulcano - an active one

    Special about Nisiros is that it is a volcano which is still active and where you can walk on the crater. Don’t expect any lava, but smoke coming out of earth. To get there, I decided to not party all night long, but go to sleep early and rent a bike next morning. The way to the crater is about 35 minutes all the way the mountain up and the rental shops only open at 8 am, we planned though to get to Kos Marina for topping up fuel that morning at 09:30 - as expected that was not happening on time, which gave me a very short but sufficient window of time to make my trip. See the pictures. Stunning.

    Heading to Nisiros

    So finally tail wind and perfect conditions for the Gennaker.. With that we had a chill day on the sea and arrived at Nisiros Island at this small village called Paloi. We had with all the boats a nice dinner at a Taverna across the boats and a nice evening. You see I slept in the bunk, as I caught a cold from all the strong wind and hence I decided to have my sleep in a more wind protected area.Les mer

    And Astypalaia

    After this nice hike we were ready to head to Astypalaia. Wind and waves were similar like the previous day, but, at least no cross waves and tailwind. So this sail was way more comfortable. Astypalaia is a nice island and the people take good care of the environment. I really appreciate this, because every now and then you realise that this beauty of the Aegean Sea is being destroyed by the many tourists - and that is so sad.Les mer

    It is getting rough

    With wind speed of more then 24, we put sails and head to Astypalaia. Well that’s what we planned that morning. Strong wind is one thing, but getting cross waves for hours, and Garmin GPS measured more elevation of more than 12 meters. So sailing felt more like surfing. Even though I enjoyed surfing the boat on the waves, it was kinda scary as you don’t know the limits. With that being said, we made last minute change, seeking for protection of the waves - after more than 4 hours of rough see - behind some islands. And that, that brought us to this wonderful lonely islands called Levitha. Levitha is an island where only 5 humans, and virtually hundreds of goats and sheep live. The Family offers 8 buoys and a small cute restaurant with this “typical” daily menu where you may be lucky to get what you order, or not if its out. So that’s fresh. The family really understands hospitality and I’d always go back there when possible. Next day, we did a short but tough hike to one of the mountains. 140 meters of elevation on a not existing rocky trail.
    We saw the goats and sheep and how they were given water by the farmer. Where the vines grow and also found some interesting crystals and munitions from Second World War.    Les mer

    Patmos here we come

    Enjoying the nice wind, before it gets rough. Our sail to Patmos was really nice and arrived there a “traditional” Paella was in the making. Delicious as always. Because I can just not not explore an island full of food I went exploring Patmos. Found a lovely place where you can see the “Magic Rock”, collected some olives and we had the first time kind of flowers on board.
    And then, well, charging electronic devices on board is always a nightmare. First of all, devices batteries seem to drain faster offshore, second, the electricity on board, by generator or shore power is not as powerful as it is like at home. But, that’s fine, some digital detox    Les mer

    Hoist the sails

    As expected, Dodecanese Islands have awesome wind and we headed over to Kalymnos. Arrived there we had a nice dinner made on board and hence I was missing the exploring the island thing. So I went on a night hike to this one epic Monasteri somewhere in the mountains, which gave a fabulous view to the port. Epic.Les mer

    Waiting to be complete

    After hanging a bit on the veranda of the hotel, talking to my new friends eventually the rest of the crew arrived. Some issues to get a taxi for 7 but eventually they did it. You got to know that grabbing a taxi on Kos is an issue during the high season. So better book one 24 prior your appointment.
    While they were on their way from the airport to the Hotel, I organised some refreshments waiting for them ice cooled, surrounded by Zizikia :D they do such a loud noise, especially when it is hot. After checkin we went to this nice beach bar called C Food n Mood, next to the Marina of Kos. Obviously not the greatest location on a Friday, when all the charter boats return from their trips, because they would open the waste tanks prior check in to the marina. Better choose the place wisely - we were lucky though :)
    Had a couple of drinks there and then decided to stay also for the dinner. The food is, I’d call it modern Greek. So quiet nice. Afterwards, went to the city Center of Kos to get a couple of drinks. Some stayed longer, so some almost missed the check out date and the checkin date for the marina. :D Well, nothing unexpected.
    Procedure then as usual, skipper to take over the boat. Well, not as usual, because the agencies insurance did not accept the boat license. It was managed by the agency responsible to be defined as the skipper. So technically we never chartered the boat.
    The other group, and that was really as usual, went to get grocery shopping. Here the supermarket offered - and especially because of the taxi issue - a delivery service at no costs. Respect.    Les mer

    Kalymnos is different. People are friendly, love their island and take good care of it. Restaurants are authentic and delicious. Kalymnos is a genuine Greek island.Les mer

    Discovering Kos City

    So arrived early in the morning. I love to experience Islands in the very early morning hours. All is quiet and you few busy people who follow their traditional work. Let’s say, the tourism has not waken up by that time and so it is hard to get a taxi. ;) I managed and got to the Hotel. The cab driver though, tried to pick up as many other people as possible on the drive to the hotel :D something you have to accept.
    Arriving there, the story continued. Tourism still as sleep, so I got to chat with the staff of the Hotel. Well, in greek as much as possible as per my abilities. It worked out well. And once again, I realise that what I‘ve learned in my child ages, is still preserved. It felt so good to experience the real people of the island, so friendly and open heard. And they helped me to get my room way earlier than the standard checkin would. So used the time to get a nap from the ferry journey. Checked a couple of restaurants afterwards, kinda disappointed as most of them serve junk food. Just can’t get why they adopt so much to the tourism and do not stay with their roots. Hey, that’s why we come here. But, I should make better experiences later as I decided to do a quick hop to Kalymnos island just for the evening.    Les mer

    Kos here we come - well not all at once

    Going to Kos Island to meet the crew on Friday for sailing. Pretty much the main reason of going to greece.
    Said, this time no planes and that’s why I chooses the ferry.
    12 hours from Athens Port Piraeus to Kos with Blue Star 2. This monster makes 48 km/h I recommend to check in online latest two hours prior departure, else you need to pick up your ticket onsite and queue - lessons learned from last year.
    This time, all Covid measures are also followed by the crew which I respect a lot.

    Another lessons learned for next time is, if the trip is longer than 8 hours, I will book the bunk in advance. If not booked in advance, one needs to wait until departure and then hope for a free bunk. I got one, but no window and top level below the exhausts. Not too comfortable. Just saying, no issue for me.    Les mer
