The already scenic route was given a dramatic effect by the clouds overhanging the mountains. At some places we crossed 4200 mts above msl.

There was this one section of the road near Potosi where there were some amazing geological formations right next to the road. The land had uplifted and multiple layers of different textures and colors had been exposed to the atmosphere. The softer layers like sandstone had been eroded while the hard lava basalt had remained to make for some very dramatic formations. There were honeycomb erosion effects as well there.
A lovely spot, worth stopping by for a few minutes.Les mer

Beautiful landscape on the Sucre-Potosi road continued further towards Potosi. We decided to stop at Potosi for the night. Since we had data now, searching and booking the room was not that hard.

We found a nice place to stay at Hotel Churata at Potosi. They had their own garage so the vehicle was safe but the parking in the basement was a bit of a challenge as can be seen in the pics. They charged is 150 b$ for a twin room.Les mer

Potosi Town

It was just 5pm so we decided to go check out the town of Potosi. The town is about 3800 mts above sea level and we found out that the city center was about 3 kms from the hotel. That would have been too much of a climb since we had not yet acclamatized to the altitude. Luckily, there we frequent buses from opposite the hotel to the city center. We took one of these and got off very near the city center at the main Marcado when our micro banged into the vehicle behind and the fight started.Les mer

Potosi - Main square

From the Mercado Central, we walked to main square that has many interesting buildings from the colonial era. The main one being the National Mint of Bolivia. We saw a nice building a bit away from the main square and decided to have a look. It was the tower of Jesus and had a staircase to the bell tower. We decided to go ans have a look at the town from above. What luck and what a great idea it was. The views from above were stunning.Les mer

It was about 8 pm by now so we decided to go to the Mercado Central for some food. On the way, we saw an old lady selling popcorn and of course decided to taste a few. She was using a pretty manual way of popping them but we got them hot and really enjoyed it.
At the Mercado Central, we found that the market was quite different than the ones we had seen in other town. There were no food stalls, only fruits, vegetables and meat sellers, those had closed everything by now. We asked around and were told that the food stalls were near one of the exits of the market.Les mer

Potosi - Food hunt goes vegetarian

There were quite many food stalls near the market. People were sitting and eating in the open air. But, we couldn't find anything vegetarian there so we decided to go on and search a bit further in the markets that were never ending. We ended up at the beautifully lit San Clemente church. There we searched on Google and found a few restaurants nearby. We decided to go to Magic Manzana (Magic Apple).Les mer

Magic Manzana

When reached Magic Manzana, we found it was a vegetarian restaurant. That was a surprise and a pleasant one for me 😁
As soon as we entered the restaurant, we heard music and fireworks outside. The owner explained it was a protest march by the students of the university against politicians not respecting the constitution. A parody march actually. It was a lot of music and dancing and students dressed up as politicians and devil. It lasted for about 15-20 minutes and we watched the whole procession from the restaurant window.

The procession continued for a few minutes while we enjoyed it from our vantage position.
After that we had a good 2 course vegetarian meal. I had cream of tomato soup and a quinoa burger. Both were very delicious.
After the food, we decided to walk the 2 kms back to the hotel. On the way we came across a huge local market that had closed by this time but the covered stalls were still there and my guess is it was a good part of 1.5 kms. One of the juice stalls was still open so we had papaya juice. I had it with milk and Hristo with water.Les mer

Refueling on the way

Once beyond Potosi, fuel is hard to get by and after Uyuni, it wouldn't be available at all so we decided to refill at one of the villages where we saw a fuel pump sign.
We drove around the small village but couldn't find the pump. After talking to the locals we figured, almost everyone of them sells gasoline. So we found one of the locals that had some available and bought 20L for 120 b$. This we learnt later was a bit higher than the normal fuel rate of 3.73 b$.Les mer

Uyuni - Train cemetery

Once we reached Uyuni, our 1st stopover was a the train cemetery. Its the last resting place of old steam locomotives that were the main power horses during the Spanish colonial era. Now, there's not much use left for these so they were all dumped in the desert around Uyuni.
Its a nice tourist attraction now.Les mer

Colchani festival

After Uyuni, we drove to Colchani. More or less the raw salt desert starts from this small village. We planned to see the salt museum in the village.
When we reached there, we found out that the salt museum was closed since there was a local festival going on.
Again, right place, right time for us 😁
We decided to have a look. It was a nice mix of local singing and dancing, followed by some sort of a modern concert on the stage. The villagers from all around were there with their traditional dresses and headgear. It was a riot of colors and heasy dancing.Les mer

Our 1st stop was at the Palacio de Sal. One of the many hotels in this area, made fully of salt. We stopped and had a look around the place. The room rent for 1 night is $190 for the cheapest room.Les mer

The eye of the salt is a clear salted water pool bubbling out from below the ground in the middle of the salar salt plains.
The water is clear but very salty. We dipped our hands in the water to feel the consistency and immediately on drying, the hands were white with salt. We tasted it and found it to be very salty. I'm not sure why and how salt water is seeping out from below the ground.
All around us were baked and crystallized salt planes. Its a surreal sight.Les mer

In the middle of the salt plains is the monument commemorating the Dakar race held in the salar in 2014. There are llama figurines made of salt nearby. We stopped there for a while.

Near the Dakar monument, there is a place where one can find flags from quite a few countries in the world. Hristo found the Bulgarian flag and I found 2 Indian flags. Unfortunately, no Swedish flag 😯
