    Vientiane

    January 9, 2020 in Laos ⋅ 30 °C

I had a host in Vientiane, a woman named Soda offered to host me. She offered to pick me up on her motorbike but I couldn’t get a hold of her and the airport wi-fi sucked. I bought a drink to get the wi-fi password and I got directions to her place instead. I was able to find her place, hidden inside one of the alleys. It was a bit of a shabby shack but still homey. I was supposed to sleep on the sofa covered by a mosquito net. We talked for a bit, she likes playing the guitar, identified as a minimalist and she told me about her favorite rock star. I commented how arid Vientiane felt, the sunlight there was very orangey, almost a bit desert like. This made Soda laugh. Our conversations continued on for a while until I excused myself because I wanted to see more of the city and she told me I would find her again later here.

I had assumed Laos and Myanmar would be a bit similar since they were neighboring countries but to my surprise they were quite different. Both were still Buddhist countries, but the temple architecture and statues were nothing alike. I went to Wat Si Saket, Wat meaning temple. A huge roofed temple with pillars supporting it. They were a lot of people praying inside. I also passed by That Dam, a black stupa. I also went to Wat Si Muang, another Lao temple, there was a statue of Buddha being covered by snakes like an umbrella. On my way to Patuxai, I passed by a money exchange hoping to get rid of my Myanmar kyat but turns out I lost my chance.

Patuxai is one of the central monuments in Vientiane, it was smackdab in the middle of the main road, towering over the surrounding park and fountain. I was able to see some more important government buildings along the way. It seems like Vientiane was pretty big on elephants as well, as there were numerous elephant statues all around. I hanged out for a bit as the sun began to set, painting the sky an even more arid color. I started to head back another direction, passing by some more hidden temples. I arrived at Soda’s place and found the place to be locked. I was still feeling quite unwell and had to wait for several hours, I called her and sent messages but she wasn’t answering. There were some very angry dogs as well, which added to my nervousness. After a long time of waiting, I decided it was taking too long and went to look for a new place to stay. I stopped by a café before it closed and ordered some food so I could use the wi-fi and book a place. I booked a pretty good boutique hotel near my place, I hurried off.

Having approached the check-in counter, it seemed like my booking hadn’t fully been processed yet. I decided to have some dinner first in one of their restaurants. I was the only customer, I ordered some bruschetta but when the order came there was a huge bug so the waiter promptly replaced it with a new one. After my meal, I was able to check-in successfully. I was shown to my room, bigger, better, cleaner and not that expensive too. My family got in touch with me, as well as Soda. She apologized, turns out she was jogging along the Mekong river. I told her it was no problem and it was actually better this way for me since I was still sick. I took my shower, my meds and relaxed for a bit before drifting off to sleep.

I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. It was my birthday today, I had greeting from family and friends. I took my shower and headed back to Soda's place. She was going to help me get to Vang Vieng, I also wanted to visit Pha That Luang, Vientiane's own brand of a golden temple. I soon found myself back to Soda's place, we spoke for a bit before she offered to give me a ride on her motorbike to the temple. I happily got on and off we went.

We stopped by a sandwich place, similar to Vietnam's banh mi, but the Lao version. It was absolutely delicious, and such a hefty breakfast too, I couldn't finish it even after we arrived at the temple. The temple grounds were surprisingly empty, I had it all to myself, we walked around the golden stupa and took some photos before looking around the other parts of the temple grounds. There were golden reclining Buddha statues amongst other works of art.

Soda took me to the place where there were mini-buses going to Vang Vieng. We waited here for a bit, I also got nervous because there was a chance that it would not arrive, I just put all my trust in Soda. In the end, she did come through and I was able to get one of the cheapest rides to Vang Vieng. It was a long ride, couple of hours worth. We stopped by a souvenir shop/restaurant along the way for a short break before completing the rest of the journey.

    January 10, 2020 in Laos

Arriving in Vang Vieng, I was immediately lost again as I had no wi-fi. I asked some of the other passengers if they could search my hotel for me. They kindly did, and it seemed to be a bit of a walk away from the main town but it was a very high-end hotel that I booked since it was my birthday. It was almost a 20 minute walk until I arrived at the hotel. The Vietnamese concierge, Tom, gave me my keys and agreed to give me a ride back in town to exchange some money so I dropped off my stuff and went with him. Coming back, I also booked some tours for the next day.

I spent the rest of the day just relaxing in my room, texting with Janelle. Some hot air balloons started to fly above the town as well, I also accidentally locked myself out of the room and got another extra set of keys. Eventually, we had a huge fight as she felt I was leaving her just go traveling. On hindsight, she was right but at that time I was very angry that she chose to pull this off on my birthday and pretty much ruined the whole day. At night, I decided to head into town to buy some magic mushrooms from one of the restaurants with a "happy" menu. They were dried and I ate a bunch but they flopped and didn't work, I also ate some happy pizza as well and also thought they didn't work. In the middle of the night, they hit me hard and I straight up panicked just because I was getting too high. After I calmed down, getting some outside air. I went back to sleep still very buzzed.

I woke up the next day feeling very depressed just because we haven't resolved our fight yet. I had an amazing breakfast though and I got on our jeep for the day. We didn't talk to each other the whole day today, even though I had such an amazing line up of activities. I also wasn't in the mood to talk to any of my companions though they did try to talk to me.

Our first stop was to go tubing through some underground caves, that was really fun to be honest, I had to pull myself with a rope while my ass was submerged in cold water. Some people fell in and I can only imagine how fun that would have been. After tubing through the caves, we went to go kayaking across the Mekong river. I was the only solo-traveler so I got paired with one of the guides, lucky me because I really suck at kayaking that time so the guide really pulled my weight. The river itself was beautiful, brown from the soil but surrounded by amazing mountains and forests. It was a long way to the end goal, we stopped by a restaurant in along the way and had some pretty good food. One of the girls tried the swing on the river and ended up losing her glasses. After paddling for who knows how long, we finally reached the final destination, not before seeing a couple of boat crashes on one of the banks. This was one of the moments I was thankful to be paired with the guide.

Our last stop was the blue lagoon, it was really definitely blue and a lagoon. There was a swing but it was crowded by Koreans so I just stayed put for a bit and had a rest at one of the cafes nearby waiting for the final pick up. I was still quite depressed throughout the whole day. It was really a bummer. We got picked up and dropped off at one of the tour agencies office, I was asked again by one of my companions if I was okay and I just told them I was having problems with my girlfriend.

At night, I went off again to the restaurant to try some magic mushrooms again, this time I took the fresh one and gulped it along the way. Not even half way to my hotel, I already started feeling the effects. This was my first lesson on set and setting with psychedelics, taking them with such negative emotions in me was definitely not going to end well. It definitely led to a very bad trip, I ended up puking and there was so much sadness. I went down and talked with Tom for a bit, he was such a kind guy and just listened and comforted me knowing I was tripping balls. He offered me a cigarette and I just chilled with him on the poolside staring at the full moon. He led me back to my room and told me the puke was no problem and left me some bananas too. I later went out again to go to the open area and just stared at some trees that seemed to resemble a goddess. I took a shower and went back to bed, video chatted with some friends like Nikita and Sarah just for the laughs and funny story and finally went to sleep.

Arriving in Vientiane, I set off for the bus terminal going to Xieng Khuan, also known as the Buddha Park. It was my last day for the trip so I decided to really enjoy it and not miss my flight. Lugging my bag around town was really taking its toll on my shoulders so I was glad I was able to find the right bus after going around a couple of times. It was a bit far but not too far, I was able to leave my bag with the front desk and explore the park at leisure.

There were hundreds of Buddha statues in different poses, forms and shapes. It was a really interesting place, there was a route to follow so I went around the whole park and entered one of the stupas in the center that housed even more statues. The stupa had rooftop access and the view from above was spectacular as you could see the whole park with a bird's eye view. Beyond the park, there were flower fields as well. I decided I didn't want to risk another flight fiasco so I headed back to Vientiane.

My final stop for Laos, back to Vientiane. I had to wait for a long time for the right bus to arrive going to the airport, but the street vendors helped me with that. There was a lot of time to spare in the airport so I lazed about and let the time pass by until it was time for me to board my flight back to Tokyo.Read more
