      Topkapi Palace

      29 Mayıs 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

The Topkapı Palace ('cannon gate palace') or the Seraglio is a large museum in the east of the Fatih district of Istanbul in Turkey. In the 15th and 16th centuries it served as the main residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans.Construction, ordered by the Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, began in 1459, six years after the conquest of Constantinople.

There are 4 courtyards. Each very different since they were all built at different times by different rulers.

      Hagia Sophia

      29 Mayıs 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

      Hagia Sophia is unique.

Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it temporarily became a Roman Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. In 1935, the Republic of Turkey established it as a museum. In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque.

Another unique feature are the huge number of Christian symbols including paintings of Jesus Christ and the Holy Cross.

I felt overwhelmed when I went in.

      Ready to nap Istanbul edition

      Galata Tower

      28 Mayıs 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

The Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) or with the current official name Galata Kulesi Museum (Galata Kulesi Müzesi) was built as a watchtower as a part of the Walls of Galata, the tower is currently being used as an exhibition place and a museum. It's one of the symbols of Beyoğlu and Istanbul..

The views from the top are amazing. You go up in an elevator but come down walking. The neighbourhood is extremely vibrant.

      Mısır Çarşısı

      28 Mayıs 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Mısır Çarşısı or the Spice Bazar is the place to be. Once you enter it is mind-boggling. The colours, smells, sights and sounds engulf all your senses at once. It is right out of the Arabian nights. The spices, condiments, honey, tea, dried fruit and nuts, jewelry are literally out of this world. We spent quite some time savouring the delights visually as well as tasting them (initially I thought I would write gustatorily...is that even a word?)

We were told that the Great Bazar is more of a tourist attraction as opposed to the Spice Bazar which is authentic.

      Istanbul, Turkey

      10 Kasım 2023, Türkiye ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Definitely not the way we had hoped to start the next Chapter. The day after arriving in Istanbul I had to fly back to Oz for 5 days so left Jessie to explore the city on her own.

We initially booked an apartment in Istanbul's Beyoğlu District. Unfortunately for Jessie, it was directly above a nightclub which made the 5 days pretty torturous. We were drawn to the area as it was promoted as being "more local" than the southern side of the Golden Horn. The southern side is where most of the tourist attractions like the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar are located. It turns out Beyoğlu is just as busy, but more as a shopping and nightlife area. I arrived back in Istanbul on Friday afternoon. After dropping my bag back we went for a walk down to Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn and enjoyed a shisha as the sun set. The perfect way to return.

The forecast predicted heavy rain for Saturday. We got out early and made our way to the Walls of Constantine before the rain set in. I'd say the walls are arguably the reason Istanbul, or Constantinople as it was called, is famous. Based on this I expected them to be a must-see destination. We caught the bus out to where Google Maps had a point marked for the Walls of Constantinople. All we found was a main road passing through a segment of neglected ancient wall. I guess that's what happens during endless years of conquest. Once conquered, likely forgotten.

On Sunday, we had an overnight bus to Bodrum. We packed up our gear and stored it at a bag storage place near the Grand Bazaar. Then, we explored the main tourist highlights: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Topkani Palace. We had dinner before trying to get to the Bus station however ended up missing the connecting metro because the train didn’t arrive as per the schedule. We ended up catching a bus and train in the opposite direction so we could meet the original bus at its third stop of the journey. Nothing like a last-minute adrenaline dump to push you to your next destination.

      Istanbul Wrap-Up

      6 Ekim 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Left my hotel after 9 and got to the airport stupidly early for a 1325 flight but there was nothing else to do and I AM an airport geek! IST airport is impressive. Only opened 2019 and is Europe's largest and busiest airport. Top notch spaces, services and facilities. They even have a dedicated lounge for 'Special People ' (Down Syndrome, dementia etc listed) to provide a calm space and dedicated staff to assist.

Istanbul is a fascinating place. All too short a visit, although I saw the main historic sights. It is quite a clean city. I don't know if Turks just don't litter, or if there is very efficient cleaning. You get the flavour of the 'orient' with the markets and the shops along the streets, but it is still a European city (not technically part of the Middle East) and the infrastructure is all up to date and maintenance levels are high. And so much history from the Roman Empire through the Byzantine era, then the Ottoman Empire, it was a leading city for some 1500 years.

Day 1 Tuesday, Oct 3rd: Arrival day, so really travel time. But did get the one event in. Put in 8,028 steps , mostly in airports. It was partly cloudy on arrival and about 20.

Day 2, Oct 4th: Long day today and saw a huge amount. Really experienced the hustle and bustle of this place and all its chaos. Was mainly a walking tour of the south bank and overdid the walking with 20,772 steps. The weird thing about Istanbul is that it is very hilly and they built all their main buildings at the tops of hills! Mostly cloudy and it wasn't too hot.

Day 3: Oct 5th. Got up and was worried I couldn't do anything. After I got home last night I fell asleep for an hour then couldn't get back to sleep and was also really sore this morning. However, got a shower and breakfast and took a cab to the first stop to save my muscles for important stuff! Weather was a bit iffy too. Had really heavy rains overnight and it was cool cloudy and we had intermittent light rain. For me, though, better than 30 degrees! Ended up doing one museum less than planned but also managed to walk all the way back today. Today was basically the #1 and #2 sites on the tourist trail. Easy day of 12,350 steps in cool weather..

      Lunch facing the Bosphorus

      28 Mayıs 2022, Türkiye ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

That's our lunch. I had a lamb sheesh kebab and Shyama had buttered prawns. One interesting thing: we had just ordered these two dishes. We were served bread and tea on the house. Yummmmmmmm
