      Wallace Monument

      Nur weil wir gestern zufällig einen Flyer vom Wallace Monument in der Hand hatten und das Bild echt spektakulär aussah, sind wir heute nach Stirling gefahren. Was für ein Glück!
      Eigentlich wollten wir erst zum Stirling Castle, da war aber der Parkplatz voll und irgendwo in der Stadt parken (mit Anhänger) war auch nicht einfach möglich.
      Dann eben erst zum Monument, da war nicht nur genug Platz, der Parkplatz ist auch noch kostenlos. 👍🏼
      Das Wallace Monument ist ein 67m hoher Turm, der - Überraschung - zu Ehren dem Freiheitskämpfer William Wallace gebaut wurde.
      Bis zur Aussichtsplattform braucht man nur 246 Stufen in einer engen Wendeltreppe hochzuklettern, dann hat man eine wunderbare Aussicht. Leider muss man später die Stufen auch wieder nach unten laufen.      Læs mere

      Keep cool and stay LEFT!

      We have left Edinburgh and rented ourselves a car! A nice car! (we basically had no choice). Rentals were ridiculously priced and very low inventory. We will just have to grin and bear it! 😆😉 Driving on the right side of the car, in the left lane, in a country that loves their roundabouts… well, it’s been something!! We had a very quick stop at the Linlithgow Castle (Mary Queen of Scotts was born there). Then we drove to Stirling and will be spending one night here in an inexpensive hotel. The highlight of today was the Stirling Castle, but you’ll have to see the next post for that! I also got a few pics of the Wallace Monument just as sun was setting.       Off to Scotland

      Today we said good bye to Scarborough and headed north for our family trek through Scotland. A big day of driving, but interesting to see the landscape change the further northern we got. We stayed overnight in a group of "pods", which were quite warm and comfortable. And sheep!Læs mere

      Weil plötzlich beide Scheinwerfer nicht mehr funktionieren musste ich nach Stirling in die Werkstatt und bin dann gleich da geblieben. Ein besonderes Denkmal und noch jede Menge alter Steine bestimmen das Stadtbild.
      Also habe ich heute nicht so viele Höhenmetrr sondern mehr Streckenmeter gemacht.

      Stirling Castle

      We visited the Kelpies on the way out of Falkirk this morning.
      The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies. They represent the heavy horses of Scottish history pulling the wagons, ploughs and barges across Scotland.
      Further north we spent time having a tour of Stirling Castle.
      Some of the earlier buildings were dated early 12th century and additions were made between the 1400's and 1600's
      It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs, giving it a strong defense position.
      Many seiges occured there as it was the home of royality and the centre of politics before Scotish independence. Our guide could have told stories for hours but we needed to move on to Culloden near Inverness for the next two nights.      Læs mere

      246 Steps, wir haben es getan!

      Anno Domini 1297, England unterdrückt die Schotten! Aber ein junger mutiger Schotte schaft es die Clans zu vereinigen und in einer entscheidenden Schlacht, hier bei Stirling, kann die kleine schottische Truppe die weitaus größere englisch Macht unter Edward dem Ersten vernichtend schlagen. Wallace hatte die Engländer in eine Falle gelockt und die für den Rückzug erforderliche Brücke angesägt.
      Ein Jahr später kam die englische Armee wieder, da ging es andersherum. Aber das Ereignis 1297 war damals der Anfang der schottischen Unabhängigkeit, die 1328 erfolgte.
      Diese Ereignisse führten 1869 zum errichten des "National Wallace Monument"
      Und dazu das 1995 ein gewisser Mel Gibson in einem Film darüber spielen konnte. Da wurde die Handlung leicht verändert.
      Wallace wurde später leider gefangen genommen, gehängt, ausgeweidet und gevierteilt, ja das war damals so üblich.
      Und deshalb ist er heute der schottische Nationalheld. Ich weiss nicht ob es ihm was nutzt, aber so ist das ja mit allen Helden.

      William Wallace Monument.

      We’ve got a plan this morning to see the William Wallace Monument. We thought it was just a monument you climbed up the hill and had a look at but no it’s a whole experience apparently. We’ve booked for 10 o’clock and once more our timing is impeccable and there are only a few people out and about that early. It’s a bit cool today and the wind is picking up.

      The monument was built and funded by the people of Scotland to celebrate one of their heroes and his efforts to free Scotland from the rule of England. It has 246 steps to the top but luckily there are three floors of displays to break the steps up. The Hall of Arms, The Hall of Heroes, The Royal Chamber and then of course The Crown at the very top. All the displays are so well done but the crowning glory is really at the very top. It is such a clear day we had magic views across the whole landscape in every direction. Jesus, Mary and Joseph the wind was horrendous. I think it was gusty up to 50ks, it was certainly giving us a bad hair day. Not to mention the wind chill factor.

      They had an actor there as well at then end telling the story of William Wallace. Most people know the story thanks to the film Braveheart and after visiting the monument we all want to watch the film again.

      Back into town for a pub lunch, we tried to park in town but it is impossible, luckily our accomodation is not far away so took the car home and walked into town. We passed a bit of a market in the Main Street and one of the vendors was selling home made pies so we bought a selection of them to have for supper. Personally I thought they were much better than the lunch I had. Everyone else had chicken, I had Mac and Cheese, wrong choice!

      Stirling, einkaufen und Füsse ablaufen

      Donnerstag Nachmittag, Stirling ,Old Bridge, das ist genau da wo Wallace die Engländer abgestochen hat. Der Fluss war blutrot.

      Wir sind dann noch durch die Stadt gelaufen, Grillzeug gekauft und Milchkaffee im Porticulli.
      Regenwetter!
      Als wir zu dem Mopeds kommen steht da eine Frau mit ihrem Kleinkind und macht Fotos, also Kind und Moped als Hintergrund, weil so toll.
      Und bevor wir losfahren kommt ein Schotte und sagt er wäre extra her gefahren um die Mopeds zu sehen. Er hat eine Guzzi Quota und eine Ural. Gibt uns Tourentipps, er ist voll begeistert.
      Etwas ähnliches hatten wir gestern schon auf dem Campingplatz, da kam ein 80jähriger und hat erst mal 20 Minuten Fotos gemacht.
      Gespanne sind eine echte Attraktion.      Læs mere

      Stirling Castle!

      Stirling Castle has records as far back as 1110 and is one of the largest and most historically important castles in Scotland! (So much history in-fact that I will not be going into detail 😆). It was a lovely afternoon and the sun lit up Stirling Castle for us in the most beautiful ways! The castle stands on the edge of a cliffside on the top of a hill and the views from the walls of the castle are breathtaking! I was in picture taking heaven!       William Wallace Monument

      William Wallace war einer der Anführer des Widerstandes gegen Eduard I. von England (Edward Longshanks), der die Oberherrschaft über Schottland beanspruchte und den schottischen König John de Balliol 1296 zur Abdankung gezwungen hatte. Gemeinsam mit Andrew de Moray fügte Wallace am 11. September 1297 in der Schlacht von Stirling Bridge den englischen Truppen unter John de Warenne eine vernichtende Niederlage zu, bei der Moray jedoch schwer verwundet wurde. In der Folge vertrieben die beiden nun die Reste der englischen Administration aus Schottland und wurden vom schottischen Adel als Guardians of the Realm zu Regenten Schottlands im Namen des in englischer Gefangenschaft befindlichen Königs John Balliol proklamiert. Wallace wurde zudem in Selkirk zum Ritter geschlagen.[4] Wallace führte sogar, möglicherweise gemeinsam mit Malise, Earl of Strathearn, einen Plünderungszug durch die englischen Grafschaften Northumberland und Cumberland aus. Aus dieser Zeit, nämlich vom 11. Oktober 1297, stammt die einzige erhaltene Urkunde, die auf William Wallace und Andrew Moray als Aussteller zurückgeht und mit der sie den Hansestädten Hamburg und Lübeck freien Verkehr mit allen schottischen Häfen zusagten. Sie wird im Archiv der Hansestadt Lübeck verwahrt.[5] Schon am 22. Juli 1298 wurde er von Eduard I. in der Schlacht von Falkirk besiegt. Als Konsequenz aus der Niederlage trat Wallace von seinem Amt als Guardian zurück und hielt sich zeitweise in Frankreich auf. Seine Nachfolger als Guardians wurden Robert the Bruce, 4.
