      Chester Zoo

      June 2 in England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

      About Chester Zoo:
Location: Upton-by-Chester, Cheshire, England. Chester Zoo was opened in 1931 by George Mottershead and his family. The zoo is one of the UK's largest zoos at 51 hectares and has a total land holding of approximately 160 hectares!

We were very spoilt. 1) The weather was smashing, and 2) Lisa made us a delicious packed lunch. We had sandwiches and a cous cous salad to keep us going! As we made our way around the park, enjoying all the wonderful animals and reading up on them, we stopped for a coffee break and ice creams too.

It was a fab day out ❤️

We got back to roast beef simmering in the slow cooker, and it smelt devine! We had all the trimmings and yorkshire pudding too! Mint chocolate ice cream for dessert 😋

Wafer Bars: a wafer biscuit covered in chocolate. Yum with a cuppa

      Jive: it's the Twix bar

      Chester

      October 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Read more

      Wales trip - day 2

      March 10, 2020 in Wales ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

After a lovely cooked breakfast - thanks Angela - we had a quiet day in Chester and Wrexham. Weather was OK for most of the day, there was a little rain but only when we were driving. Phil bought some new shoes and a new sweatshirt. Chester was a nice place to wander around and we had a lovely pub lunch there. Stopped off at Wrexham the way back but it was quite run down to be honest - wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to visit. Tomorrow Snowdonia beckons, weather permitting.Read more

North Wales Day Trip ( Part 2)

      May 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Nik - Betws - Y - Coed - A cute little idyllic Welsh Town. Like a fairy tail village. I had a sticky beak in the little local craft store then Suzie and I had a stroll through the pretty little town.

On our tour bus was a family. Mum, Dad and two children. While we were in this town I noticed the little boy who was maybe 6 or 7 running through the park and singing 'Cha Cha Cha', the song from Finland, and my favourite song this year too. I stuck up a conversation with the Mum. They were from Israel and this was their 12th time attending Eurovision. Wow! Lucky them!

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - Our last stop for today. We had the chance to walk across the Aqueduct. Lovely 360° views. Even saw a canal boat cross as we were walking. The aqueduct is seen as a Site of Outstanding Universal Value.

      Chester Family

      January 7, 2020 in England ⋅ 🌬 55 °F

One of the reasons to come this way was to reconnect with family. Colin was my moms cousin. I remember Adel and I playing at he and his wife Gail’s house about 1975 (yikes that was a long time ago). Had a wonderful very long lunch with Colin, Gail and a very tolerant Marc who listened on about family he never met.

Cheers to Family. Who are stuck with me no matter the challenges.

      Roman Gardens

      May 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

These are beautiful gardens created in the 1940's to showcase Roman discoveries in one place of peace and tranquillity. There is no doubt much more buried, waiting to be discovered. Very peaceful and a wonder to be walking through this history.Read more

      Chester

      April 21, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Chester is a little like Wells in that it was actually even neater than I expected. The little streets with all the half-timbered buildings are the Chester Rows, a unique shopping area with very old, historic buildings housing rows of shops on two floors (narrow little staircases here and there provide access). Apparently it's world famous (who knew). They've also got a Roman amphitheater (no one else was there, so I got it to myself -- I love when it drizzles and sends all the tourists indoors) and a few stretches of their old medieval walls (I briefly walked them on the way back to the station).Read more

      Chester-Friends Romans and Countrymen?

      January 7, 2020 in England ⋅ ☁️ 52 °F

The Romans were busy throughout Britain building walls and forts. Of course all that building required that the men keep clean. These are the remnants of Roman baths complete with heated floors and water. The romans also brought with them construction with mortar and rock. The English quickly utilized the building technique and stone construction took off.Read more

    • Day 21

He seemed quite friendly until . . .

      May 17, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

…. he heard our Australian accents - at which time he pulled a sword on us, muttering darkly ‘didn’t we send you people all off somewhere in boats years ago? - they obviously didn’t finish the job properly’😳

We arrived in Chester this morning after about 1.15 hr very scenic drive up the coastline and then inland to cross the border back into England, then shortly after arriving in Chester - the oldest Roman base in the UK. It was essentially built as a fortified city as a defence against the wild Welsh to the southwest.

Having been so frugal yesterday, I felt justified in lashing out and late last night purchased online a ‘hop on / off’ bus tour, combined with a short boat cruise on the river Dee - all at a discounted, combined online price, of course.

Our accommodation was situated right at the racecourse which is the oldest racecourse in both England (and indeed the world). Having arrived at about 10am, we were way too early to check in, so had a coffee while we waited for the open top bus which came right past the front door.

The bus commentary was very informative as we made the circuitous route around the city. We spotted the Chester Christadelphian hall along the way and decided we would go there for Bible Class tonight. However, we discovered on checking their website that it is held Tuesday evenings 😔.
We exited the bus at the Riverboat stop. The half hour trip up the river Dee on the boat was relaxing and similarly informative and by this stage we felt we were getting a feel for the layout of the city.
On return to the dock, it was now time to start exploring the city by foot. Highlights included:
*A circumnavigation on foot of the ancient walls,
      * Admiring the ‘second most photographed clock’ in the UK
*The unique 13thC timber houses called ‘The Rows’.
      * Shopping for some gloves for Loss (which will possibly be needed in Scotland but almost definitely in Iceland) to replace one which had been inadvertently lost along the way.
      * Loss finding £5 on the Roman walls pavement! (our first cash since Windsor Castle)
      * Checking out the Roman amphitheatre - the largest and most complete found in the UK.
      * Finding the ruins of a ‘Hypocaust’ directly underneath a cafe (as advised by one of my patients who had grown up here and told me about it recently)
      * Seeing the purpose built aircraft (Airbus Beluga) in the sky that flies Airbus wings manufactured here at Chester to the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France for final assembly.
      * Having an excellent dinner on a warm English evening, overlooking the Racecourse and enjoying a pint that was ‘on the house’ because the waitress said I would earn it if I could find the picture hung upside down on the walls of the bar / restaurant. (This I did while waiting for Loss to come back from the WC).
      * Avoiding being ‘terminated’ by our Roman army soldier friend.

All in all, a successful day.
