      Derby and Bakewell

      25 Jun 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Had a few dramas returning our hire car but won't bore you! Happily set out for Bakewell after leaving Derby and we were planning on having a famous Bakewell Tart. Sadly, when we realised they were full of jam we changed our minds and set about a brief exploration of the town. Bakewell is another market town located on the River Derwent. (nothing to do with the lakes district though) It was a busy market day, people everywhere but a friendly vibe. Visited another ancient church with remnants of earlier buildings dating from the 9th century. The stones were etched with symbols including the ancient staffordshire knot which adorned what is left of a cross in the church grounds. Astonishing antiquities which really link you to the past and the people that lived in these parts, maybe some our forebears!! Homeward bound through lovely farmland we spotted a dairy which used raw milk. Col had an icecream and me a delicious coffee. You could really taste the difference. Final stop was Ashborne, a pretty place with a Sainburys. Home with our stash of goodies and a pile of vegies and Cod for tea.Baca lagi

      Stalkers Cottage Day 1

      22 Jun 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Big sleep in after our long drive yesterday. Once we got going we drove to Cheadle to do a bit of shopping. While there we had a look at a church which is known as Pugin's Gem. Pugin is an architect who designed Big Ben and the interior of Westminster. The church was spectacularly colourful inside, quite different to most English churches. Afterwards we drove over to Alton where we went to a nice pub for a quiet drink in the sun. On the way home we found a local farmshop where we picked up some more supplies. Just down the road are the ruins of Croxden Abbey where we stopped for a quick look only (closing time)This is the Abbey we can see from our cottage and like Byland Abbey it was established by the Cistercian monks in the 12thC.Baca lagi

      You command , I follow

      18 Julai 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Enjoying the day in the Cannock Chase Woods. I like the scenery, the little seas and the silence away from town. It was an old military ground in the second world War. After that it was a refugee camp for refugees from communism and today a wildlife reserve. Tomorrow, i leave Birmingham and then it goes to Burton-upon-Trent.Baca lagi

      You never stop learning

      3 Mei 2022, England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Well, today started like no other we’ve had motorhoming, the RAC man arrived to sort our engine management light problem……and solve it he did, explained the issue and gave self help advice if it happens again. What more could you ask for? Basically a common problem for auto gearbox motorhome, they don’t get revved hard because the gearbox changes gear to prevent it and if you switch off the engine during the exhaust particulate filter regen (and there’s no warning to tell you its regening) it senses an incomplete regen and gives the engine management alarm. Only indication of the pending problem is cooling fan running after switching off the engine. Solution if the fan continues to run is start the engine until the fan stops. If the light comes on drive in power mode and “give it the gun” to rev it up or manually keep in lower gear and rev it up until the light goes out. Fingers crossed!! But in hindsight that’s intuitively what we did in Dubrovnik with the old van when the same light came up, but that was out of warranty and a week from the nearest Fiat dealer.

So, van fixed, we heading to see Eris (and Ellie) for coffee and cake, of course. Lots of nanny time cuddling, feeding, changing Eris (including one poonami) before we headed out in the car to Staunton Harold Reservoir and the National Trust cafe for a light lunch and walk. It was a light lunch, they only had 3 toasties and a vegan cheese and pesto roll left, so we had all of them and some chocolate brownies. Followed by a 40 minute walk by the reservoir, very quiet and pleasant, before back to the car to go home and see Ross who had come home from work by now. Another poonami then back to the motorhome for tea and planning of some future trips before going back tomorrow for a couple of jobs and more Eris time.

      Dubious Start

      2 Mei 2022, England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Things started to go wrong when we saw the signboard that the M40 was closed between Junction 11 and 12 in both directions due to an accident and the live updates looked like it would be for several hours so we took a “scenic route”. Next an engine management light flashed up followed by a message saying the stop start system wasn’t working! We stopped and studied the manual which said it was ok to continue and decided it wouldn’t be a problem as our vehicle is only 18 months old, under warrantee and has Fiat Camper Assist so it would be easy just to give them a call on arrival - THINK AGAIN!!! We started with calling the number in the Fiat information book and got the message number not recognised. We looked it up on the internet, same number, same message. The number was international so we tried different combination of plus signs instead of 00 etc but always got the same message. We then started looking for Fiat Professional garages on the Fiat website which also didn’t work very well. Next we logged into our Fiat profile and found 2 other numbers, first one - you guessed it number not recognised. Second number we got to speak to someone who preceded to tell us we weren’t covered on Fiat Assist then it sometimes takes a while for information to come through from Fiat, we pointed out we registered it in 2020 and even spoke to someone in Milan who confirmed we were covered for the first 3 years. The penny then dropped the call centre person hadn’t taken on board we were a motorhome not a car! So she tried to put us through to the camper department but it didn’t work. Loosing the will to live and imagining what this would have been like if we were in some foreign destination, with half the van ripped off due to an accident, I gave the number a try on my mobile and hallelujah we got through. A lovely lady called Laura found us on the system and is sending out someone to look at the van tomorrow morning. Tony has spent the last hour in “conversation” with Tesco mobile to see why his phone can’t call this number but not resolved. It is one of those days when you think “isn’t modern technology wonderful???”Baca lagi

      Alrewas

      21 Oktober 2020, England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

The rain remained with us through the morning, but just an hour from Fradley we stopped at the village of Alweras. The National Arboretum was nearby and we may stop there as we return through Alweras. As it was, we walked through the village and on to the Trent to scope out the next bit of the journey on which we joined the canal and had to navigate a weir (by which we mean, do NOT go near the weir!). Watching another boat make the join made it all look simple, so we returned to the sleepy, pleasant town and found a lovely cafe called The Bank where we partook in some lovely loose leaf tea and home made cakes (including an extra couple which we took away with us!). The local butcher was also fabulous with some lovely pies and sausages. Full of sugar, we went back to the boat and navigated our way on to the River Trent.Baca lagi

Findern and Spread Eagle for refreshment

      4 Mei 2022, England ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

A rainy start to the day but we were still able to walk to Ellie’s. I spent time with Eris whilst Tony and Ellie cleaned their motorhome ready for Eris’s first trip out in the motorhome on Saturday. In the afternoon we went to Dobbies garden centre for afternoon tea. In the evening we went with Ellie, Ross and Eris to The Spread Eagle in Rolleston for Eris’s first pub supper!

Tomorrow we head for Holyhead and the start of our Irish adventure!

      Shugborough

      30 Oktober 2020, England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We split up this morning, with Ben and I departing the boat at 8am for an hour's walk to the Shugborough National Trust estate. Mum and Kev stayed behind with the boat to visit the antique shops in Wolseley and buy a rabbit of their own.

The walk up the canalside in the early morning sunshine was lovely, and we visited the Essex Bridge at Greater Haywood, the oldest surviving packhorse bridge in the UK apparently. We took some time to play with our cameras taking photos at the bridge before walking through to the estate itself. COVID regulations meant an annoying myriad of one way or locked routes (annoying only as it seemed to serve little purpose to the prevention of spreading the disease), but we walked through and up to Hadrian's Arch under a threatening sky. Here we played some more with the cameras and then walked back down to the walled garden. The Head Gardener's house is stunning, if sadly disused, but the produce here was extensive and we took some deliciously fresh blackberries.

A call from mum informed us not only that they had moored up near us, but also that Kev had managed to fall in to the canal (although understanding why took work given her hysterical laughter!).

We wandered up the canal to the Canalside Farm Shop and Cafe where we had a well-deserved breakfast. The farm shop sells the most lovely looking food so I bought a few cakes for the final day before we went back to the boat to head for Stone.

      Wolseley Bridge

      17 Oktober 2020, England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

After our stunted start, we made good progress through the locks south of Stone. Travelling alongside the Trent, we saw masses of Canadian geese, ducks and even alpacas! The friendly swans visited us as we waited for locks to fill. I took over driving for a while, which turned out to be a challenge - my driving was fine but Ben's map reading was so questionable he got off far too early for a lock and ended up having to get back on the boat!

En route we found a lovely farm shop/cafe just outside of Great Haywood, picking up some lovely bread and cakes for the journey. The rain misted in as we left the farm shop but not enough to hold us back.

We were aiming for Great/Little Haywood, but decided to push on just little to Wolseley Bridge. A quick wander from the boat revealed a 26 acre wildlife refuge and antiques shops that made planning for tomorrow very simple. Whilst the Indian restaurant and the local pub had no table available for us to eat at, we had a few pints at the Wolseley Arms before eating some of our recently purchased baked goods on the boat (after a quick stop at Londis for playing cards that we obviously forgot - standard). Given the local amenities, and the tiredness of end of term, we had an early night in anticipation of the onward journey.
