    Rhossili, Wales

    July 17, 2019 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Rhossili Bay has been voted one of the best beaches in the UK. We drove along the Gower, although only a small area, it includes rolling hillsides, craggy clifftops, golden sands a shipwreck or two, whitewashed cottages and the most captivating coastline. The magnificent Three Cliffs Bay, with a trio of triangular crags and sandy coast. Rhossili, a vast west facing beach unfolding beneath a steep, windy headland. Worm's Head sees a spactular end to the headland. To the west of Rhossili is Llangennith probably Wales's best surfing spot. It was interesting to see all signs in Wales to have both English and Welsh lettering, as much a we practiced we have no grasp on any words. For those with some space still empty on their bucket list, a walk along the entire glorious Gower coastline approximately 50 Kms, would be a definite addition.Read more

    Rhossilli As Beautiful As Ever

    July 15, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After a lazy morning I went to Rhossilli, another windy cloudy day but at least it was dry. Its July but I could have done with my gloves! Rhossilli was quieter than I expected, that may be down to the weather. There didnt appear to be any NT volunteers or staff at Rhossilli.. I set off across the wild flower meadows, they didnt disappoint and not a sole in sight. The National Trust are planting specific plants to add nutrients to the soil, attract butterflies etc etc..The grass is very long which was strange as usually all the grass is flattened by all the visitors. I was a little concerned about not being able to see the dreaded adders but consoled myself with the fact they were unlikely to be about on such a chilly day. I made my way to cliffs above Fall Bay where I ate lunch, it was high tide so I knew I wouldn't be able to get onto the beach. The view over Fall Bay is one of my favourite views on Gower. I spent several hours watching the seals and the waves. Around 5pm, fall back in amazement we had a short spell of sunshine. Today felt almost like a normal day, it seems a longtime since we had any normality. For a short time I was able to escape what is going on in the world.Read more

    The Sunflower fields

    July 25, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

As the National Trust staff were on furlough the Sunflower seeds didnt get planted this year. A farmer who owns the adjoining fields stepped in and planted his own Sunflowers. The fields of which I think there are 2 are accessed through the National Trust fields. I was disappointed with what I saw today, the weather wasnt helping. There were very few in bloom, hopefully the display will be bit more dramatic over the coming weeks. Sadly they aren't going to be as impressive as the 400,000 the National Trust plant. They have also gone with multi coloured varietes which arent as bright as the traditional yellow sunflowers.
There is food and drink available in the field to purchase, making it a bit more commercial than what the NT do. I believe a percentage of the profits will go to local charities. What this space to see if the display becomes more dramatic in the coming weeks!

    Fall Bay

    July 25, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Rhossilli was pretty busy as I expected as its the weekend and the Sunflowers open for viewing today. I set off across country to avoid the crowds and walk to Fall bay. Low tide is 4.30 ish today giving me plenty of time to walk across the rocks onto the beach. As I expected Fall Bay was very quiet, most people don't walk much further than the coast guard station overlooking Worms Head. I chatted with a couple of local lads who were looking in the rock pools for spider crabs to take home for there families to eat. There are lots of rock pools on route to the beach. There were a few young locals on the beach, they soon left, I enjoyed listening to the sea, the views and peace and quiet.Read more

    Rhossilli

    July 29, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

This morning the weather has been ok but quite nippy and cloudy. I decided to have lunch at the van then head out to Rhossilli for a potter about. I was surprised to find it even busier than at the weekend. I have made my way to the cliff top overlooking Fall Bay where there arent many people. I feel a little sad sitting here, as someone died on Fall Bay on Sunday. A man who was free climbing alone on the rocky cliff, fell to his death. The incident was observed by some children who were on the beach at the time, that must have been very distressing for everyone. The coastguard was called, but sadly there wasnt anything they could do. I had been pottering around beneath those cliffs/rocks only 24 hours before.
As the afternoon has gone on I have had the view across Fall Bay to myself. The weather has improved so I have spent the afternoon watching the sea and typing up my Penguin updates. Its going a bit nippy again now, so will soon to be time to pack up and head back to the car.

    Fall Bay

    September 11, 2020 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I was up early today to get some more jobs done before a trip out. I managed to get one side of the van cleaned and part of the other side done but drizzle stopped me finishing it.
This afternoon the weather totally changed, time to head out. High tide was around lunchtime today so mid afternoon I headed to Rhossilli to walk to Fall bay which I should be able to access as the tide goes out. At least that was the plan, the low tide was in fact a very high low tide, as the water hardly went out all afternoon I didnt make it onto the beach. Its strange as I have never had a problem crossing the rocks before as the tide goes out. Yes, it was going out I double checked as I was starting to question it. Never mind its beautiful to look at and I was happy pottering around on the rocks, looking in rock pools. It turned into another lovely afternoon/evening. I didnt see a soul all the time I was down on the rocks.Read more
