      Another day another slay, we started today in Notting Hill at the real Notting Hill bookstore and then walked through the Portobello markets, Hyde park and Kensington Palace which was a tad bit windy and cold.

      By far the highlight was definitely West Minister Abbey. Today we were able to actually go in and it was magnificent. Lots of dead people’s tombs but also the most incredible architecture I’ve ever seen.

      Just Brilliant

      This past week has been full of adventures!

      I saw Grease the Musical, we ate bravely (eel, quail, a mystery meal at the Cook Book shop/test kitchen), we visited the Liverpool Street station to learn about the Kindertransport, I climbed in a castle, rode bikes along the river, and costed the famous Notting Hill Book Shop!

      We also visited Coventry Cathedral, a place bombed in the Blitz of WWII. This church decided to start the “Community of the Cross of Nails,” an international organization dedicated to reconciliation and forgiveness (a challenging thing after being bombed). This group is still partner cities with Dresden, Germany, which was also heavily bombed.

      Notting Hill Market

      Early rising today and a short 2 minute walk to Embankment Tube: gotta say I absolutely LOVE the Tube PT system! Never more than 5 minutes wait for next train 🚊 fast, efficient, easy to understand, circular, not just in and out! They also have such clear & concise communication around changes and delays…Metro: take note! Have always loved the tube 🚇❤️❤️❤️

      Also loving not having any access to my phone during most of the day! I forgot how liberating it is to just live in the moment and not be distracted by notifications all day. I wish or hope I could do it at home. The ultimate mindful zone.There is Wi-Fi everywhere so if I really need to check directions or anything else I just connect. I was going to get a local Sim card but decided against it after this light weight feeling and freedom entered my heart and soul!

      Interestingly, while in this zone, I was able to just sit back and watch complete human obsession with their phone. On the train to market I actually heard exclamation from one passenger when she realised the person she was texting was actually 4 seats along! This only happened after both being on same train for 5 stations 🚉😳🤦‍♂️
      Preoccupation with our devices is slowly robbing us of the special interaction in the real world 🌍😢

      With a rumbling tummy I excitedly arrived at Portobello Notting Hill markets and instantly spied the Moroccan tea and pastry man! He carefully crushed real mint leaves into his own special blend in such care and consideration! A great refreshing start to the day! 🫖

      Portobello Road market is absolutely bloody amazing! There is so much to look at, food and unique stuff! Although, I’m always reminding myself that I don’t need any more stuff! I did pretty well as I only bought a lambs wool scarf for the Melbourne winter I dread returning to 😫

      Eating my way up the meandering road filled with sight & smells of delight: Had the crisp, fresh Greek salad 🥗 freshly baked home made flakey sausage roll & relaxed with a Guinness at The Castle Pub - another favourite of mine!

      It sprinkled a few drops of rain but not near enough to dampen my spirits! I found the obligatory William Thacker’s Notting Hill bookshop from the movie… Just an FYI, the outside is as you see in the movie but the inside was just a set! Sorry. Not sorry!

      Another slight observation: every French tourist I come across or run into are rude, self entitled pricks! They seem to be oblivious to everything around them…only confirming why Paris is never in my Top Ten places to adore! 🤫

      PS: Absolutely love ❤️ coming to Markets alone! Never needing to wonder where your companion is or has wandered off to, selfishly lingering longer at anything that interest your fancy and duck and dive at your hearts content 🥰🕺🏼Self indulgence is wonderful 👍🏻      Read more

      Jamie, our guide, saw my email address and said that the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has the nickname, Boejo! Oh, dear…not sure that I want to share the name with him!
      Rebecca and I were on our own for today. We took off to Notting Hill to a very large street market. These markets are a part of the culture in Europe and can be found everyday in many towns. We got there early, but it became crowded rather quickly. The area is so charming with all the colored townhouses. We stopped in at the Travel Book Store from the movie “Notting Hill” with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
      Our next stop was Kensington Palace and where we saw the Diana statue. William and Kate live there. We walked a little in Kensington Gardens.
      We had an excellent lunch and gelato at an Italian restaurant cafe… we were in great need to rest our feet!
      Our last stop was Trafalgar where we dropped into the National Gallery for a quick peek of some of our favorite painters’ works…Monet, VanGogh, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat, Constable, and Gainsborough’s paintings including Blue Boy.
      We walked and toured nonstop for 8 hours today, so we returned to hotel at 5:30 and are in for the night. We both need to rest up for our flight to Edinburgh tomorrow where we will begin our Scotland trip.      Read more

      Green Park und Notting Hill

      Heute verschlägt es uns nochmal in den Green Park, da es hier von Eichhörnchen wimmelt die doch sehr zutraulich sind. Wenn man die richtige Überzeugungskraft hat 🥜🌰😅
      Danach ging es dann weiter nach Notting Hill auf die Portobello Road und den dort angesiedelten Roadmarket. 😎
      Da war aber auch die Hölle los an einem Samstag Nachmittag. 😅
      Außerdem gab es noch viele bunte Häuser zu begutachten, für die der Stadtteil bekannt ist. 🏘🌈

      Am Abend hat es uns ins Kings Head verschlagen, wo es zum Abschied nochmal einen Pie und Bier gab. 🤤
      Phänomenal gut 🤤🫓🍺
      Morgen geht es dann schon wieder heim und der Kurztrip ist beendet.
      War ein cooler Ausflug und London lohnt definitiv eine Reise.

      Daher in diesem Sinne, heute ist nicht aller Tage, ich Reise wieder keine Frage. 😉😎

      Portobello Market

      Today, we walked in the footsteps 👣 of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts as we meandered through the Portobello Rd Market in Notting Hill, where we each found a treasure (or two) to bring home with us. The children were also very excited to stumble upon Mr Grubbers shop, which is featured in the Paddington movies, which they've been watching a lot since we came to England.Read more

      So, I am posting about a day behind. I will try and catch up.

      Today we wanted to hit a few fun/ novelty type spots. First up, the Sherlock Holmes museum. So we hopped on a double decker bus and headed over. The bus was a nice change from the subway and it uses the same travel card. So super easy.

      The museum was really well done. Very interesting guides and stories. It was nice to see what a period home would have been like. And... it was just super cool being at 221B Baker Street.

      Afterwards we walked around and took in the 7 Dials neighborhood. We went to an indoor market and everyone got to choose what they felt like eating for a change. Then we were off to the Charles Dickens museum. It is the home where he actually lived for the first few years of his marriage and where he penned Oliver Twist. Also really well done and full of things he actually owned and used instead of just period replicas. Seeing the desk he used to write at was cool and hearing the stories about his process was fascinating.

      Afterwards we decided to head over and do a Notting Hill tour. Jen and I love the Notting Hill movie so it was cool to see where they shot some of the scenes. We had some yummy treats at a French place and then we headed home for the night.

      We ended the day just over 21,000 steps so it was another long walking day but the kids are still into it so that is great. Until tomorrow...      Read more

      Heute haben wir uns auf den Weg nach Notting Hill gemacht, leckeren Tee gekauft und uns irgendwie durch die Menschenmassen auf dem dortigen Flohmarkt gekämpft. Danach ging es zum Forbidden Planet (bekannter Shop für alle Arten von Comics, Fantasy-Büchern und Merch) und nach Chinatown. Zur Belohnung gab es leckere Pizza 🤩Read more
