A Brief Intro to WNE

I am a little behind on posting, but welcome to a log of my European study abroad program! Our first stop is Rostrevor, Mourne and Down, County Down, Northern Ireland. This place is the definition of quaint and cozy. No other music but folk will suffice. In fact, C.S. Lewis claimed this valley to be the inspiration for Narnia. If you thought it was a fantasy land, you should come visit.

Probably my favorite day of the trip thus far! The senior gang (Isabella, Tyler, Sarah, and Halle) saw many sights, including The Book of Kells, the famous Temple Bar, and Trinity College! We then headed over to the Jameson Whiskey Distillery for a tour, and of course, some tasting. Irish Triple Distilled “Water of Life” just might rival Tennessee Whiskey in smoothness (sorry Chris Stapleton).

We had brunch at Bread 41 (10/10, must try the Croissant Benedict), and dinner at the Woolen Mills (also 10/10).

Overall, it was so great to get out of Rostrevor and explore a city with such rich history and even richer whiskey!Read more

On this day, the gang went out to a Warrenpoint Town FC match! This club, founded in 1987 has been impressive in rising to the NIFL (Northern Irish Football League, the Premiership of North Irish football) despite being from such a small town, and for being such a young team.

We witnessed a clash with Armagh City in the Bob Radcliffe Cup. Warrenpoint proved the dominant side, posting a 3-1 victory.

At half, the gang and I enjoyed a £10 bucket of beer at The Point Social. Onward Warrenpoint!Read more

Traveler Papa and I love following your travels. Some of the pictures bring back some great memories of our trip to Ireland. Seeing the library at Trinity College and the exhibit introducing the Book of Kells was definitely a favorite of ours.

Belfast

This past Tuesday the gang drove up to Belfast! During our visit, Halle, Joel, and I were in change of giving a report on the Civil Rights Movement. This movement was led by students at Queens university in the 1960’s, and advocated for the rights of the Catholic population who were being discriminated against.

Belfast has been the site for many historic and gruesome conflict, but much of that would not be apparent in the way the city has continued to develop and progress. When walking by the school back ti the coach, a few of us were invited by students to a church BBQ, where we got to talk to many Christian students from Queen’s about their mission to build community.

We also visited the titanic museum, as it was built and docked in the Belfast lochs.Read more

Today the gang leaves Rostrevor to go to London!

The last few days we have been so much fun and it is sad to be leaving such a beautiful place!

It is crazy how fast this trip is moving along!

The gang made it safely to London!!! Our first day and half have consisted of double decker buses, many baked goods, and lots of walking! I’m so stoked to be spending some time here, even if it is Arsenal country!

This week has been incredible and non-stop, so I am going to do some bullet points:

• Big Ben is pretty big
• Blueberry Danish with crème
• Ed Sheeran’s restaurant, Bertie Blossoms (see the Burrata)
• The Imperial War Museum (featuring a Dutch army helmet!)
• The Globe Theatre
• Unauthorized private Banksy Collection
• The Gunner Pub (“what do we think of Tottenham? … 💩!”)
• Harry Potter Statue
• Covent Garden

London is such a fun and lively city, it is so accessible, and there are so many wonderful things to see! If only the underground tube wasn’t one million degrees (yes, in Celsius)…Read more

Day 36
Just Brilliant

This past week has been full of adventures!

I saw Grease the Musical, we ate bravely (eel, quail, a mystery meal at the Cook Book shop/test kitchen), we visited the Liverpool Street station to learn about the Kindertransport, I climbed in a castle, rode bikes along the river, and costed the famous Notting Hill Book Shop!

We also visited Coventry Cathedral, a place bombed in the Blitz of WWII. This church decided to start the “Community of the Cross of Nails,” an international organization dedicated to reconciliation and forgiveness (a challenging thing after being bombed). This group is still partner cities with Dresden, Germany, which was also heavily bombed.

Friday was out last full day in London, and boy was it a full one!

In the morning I set out on a solo adventure to the home of Ted Lasso himself, Richmond! I enjoyed a pastry and a coffee on the Richmond Green!

Next, Halle, Sarah and I went to Notting Hill and had lunch at a cook book shop/test kitchen (£7 for 3 courses)!

Lastly, Tyler and I visited the Abbey Road Studio’s, where countless amazing albums have been recorded, including the Beatles famed album named after the road itself!

What a lovely way to wrap up our time in London, and now, we are on to Berlin!Read more
