      Richmond Ruins & Royals

      June 17 in England ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

What a fabulous day visiting all the ruins and learning some of our history. The Easby Abbey, Richmond Castle and Green Howard Museum was fascinating to visit. The views high on the hill were breath taking with the rooftops, paddocks and horizon far beyond. More coffee and cake and dark chocolate Mocha to enjoy. The cobblestone market place and streets take you back. Many cafes, pubs, gift shops to visit. Out to a French restuarant tonight. People very friendly, hospitality very attentive and helpful. A great adventure so far.
Tomorrow back on the C2C. 22km. About 180km so far..😍👌👍

      Finally diagnosed Mike's Condition

      March 28, 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

      Hello folks,

Mike and I have finished our week in England. We spent the past 3 days in the Yorkshire area where we explored some small villages and managed some walks to ward off some of the damage caused by pub lunches and pies. As part of our walk in the market town of Richmond, we popped into a microbrewery where Mike read about « cenosillicaphobia » and realized that this is the condition from which he has been suffering. This condition is the fear of an empty glass. He feels better knowing his condition is actually medical and that there may be a treatment.
In Richmond we also took a tour of the oldest working theatre in the UK. An old Georgian Theatre which has been restored to it’s original state with modern amenities like lighting and electric lights so that it can continue to work. Yesterday we made a stop in the city of York where we looked in on the York Minster cathedral and impressive gothic structure built for the catholic church but converted during the reformation.

The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful rolling hills and valleys with frequent small stone villages. Lots of tea shops , old pubs and farms. The people have broad accents like listening to BBC 1 shows ( eg Last Tango in Halifax)We had lunch on the North York Moors in a very old pub where Ron and Mike stayed last year. An overriding smell in many villages is that of burning coal as many places are still heated with coal. Have to say the Northern area is quite pleasant especially since we hit a dry spell weather-wise. It is far more scenic and pleasant than the very densely populated southern regions of England. Worth another visit. Mac there is a great air museum in York but we didn’t stop in.

Today we repack and head to Portugal on a Ryan Air flight from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Looking forward to reconvening with our biking buddies Helen and Laura tonight.
Just returned our rental car to Enterprise. It was unscathed which was a feat considering the narrow ways we travelled. Our waistlines are not as unaffected!

That’s all for now. Thanks for all the comments and notes. Happy Easter!

    • On to Richmond

      August 6, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We walked from Reeth to Richmond today, which wasn’t too far (16 km) and only 260 meter ascent. The weather spit rain a few times, just enough to make us stop and put on our jackets before it quit. It’s amazing how the laws of probability work on the trail. You stop for a pee just as people show up. You stop to eat a snack in an inconvenient spot and then find a nice spot around the corner. You meet a traffic jam at the narrowest spot in a road. But the good luck balances the bad all in all. At one point today we met a sign saying the path was closed with no indication of where to go. So we decided to follow a bridlepath down to a paved narrow road which went past farm buildings. We got off track - luckily a farmer came out to tell us that we were about to go into a field with a bull. He set us on the right path, so that was an example of good luck, especially since Bob was wearing a red shirt; but it was a little awkward trying to figure out the way around old farm buildings, passing a dead sheep, avoiding stinging nettles and thistle. There are bridlepaths everywhere but most are badly grown over and poorly marked. I guess people don’t walk much anymore and certainly don’t take bridled horses. We got back on the Coast to Coast path at Marske, the ancient home of the Hutton family, with a big obelisk on the hill dedicated to a Hutton from 1816. The trail was great from there to Richmond. We arrived early (around 2:30) and had coffee at Costa, and visited a nice pet shop. Then we checked into our B&B (Williance House) - beautiful room with a window seat! Our limbs are tingling from going through stinging nettles today when we were detouring.Read more

      Home Sweet Home?

      June 2, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

If home is where you were born then here I am. On the other hand if home is where your heart is...

Strange being back in the place I was born in and grew up in until the age of 14. Well actually only 9 years as we lived elsewhere and in Canada for several years. Anyway it's strange... I still love the glorious countryside of the Yorkshire Dale's and it will always have a place in my heart but I have been so many other countries and lived so many other places that it always feels odd coming here. I have not been back for 10 years and I find being here I feel just as much a stranger in a strange land as I do on my other travels.

Despite the deep familiarity that can only come from a place you grew up in, it still feels as if I'm just another tourist in this green and pleasant land.

Home is where the heart is and as that is inside me then wherever I am is home!

Day 9 - arrived at Richmond.

      July 5, 2017 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

The cross England pub crawl continues...
After walking 124 miles (200 km) in 9 days, we've made it to Richmond where a rest day awaits.

      Top little town, this.

Had to have a Black Sheep tonight, but curiosity got the better of me, so tried that brew too. Another good (short) walk today. Had scones with jam & cream in a church dating back to about 1200. Walked through a paddock with some menacing looking bulls (with help from the local farmer). Found more mud, and met more people on the walk.
Very impressed with the boys... taking it all all in their stride, so to speak, no complaints.

      Richmond

      June 25, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Off we go again, I doh know whether I am coming or actually going theym moving me about such a lot. So Richmond it is - if only we can find somewhere to park! I ay a big lad like some an can squeeze in a car park space wiv a bit of overhang, but sideways is tight, so car park one is out. A quick search finds car park two by the old Richmond Station so we nip in and wots this, a low bridge of 9ft. A quick look at his spec card and we have 6 inches of clearance. So out she pops to mek sure I doh bang me head, it's very tight but wim through. And I can't believe I telling you this, they am off to Pickering Castle. Wot is goin on with these pair? Apart from one tower it's, a pile of old stones so they doh waste much time and go and Ave a look round the town, which boasts one of the biggest market places anywhere and a great selection of shops, cafes etc. After a pint in Spoons they visit the Georgian Theatre with a great guided tour round the oldest working theatres in the country dating back to the 18th century. A fascinating experience at a bargain £5 each. Out of Richmond to spend the night high up in the Dales at a remote farm.Read more
