      Stoke-on-Trent: Wedgwood

      4 augustus 2023, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today was an epic day of travelling. Our drive from Birmingham to Yorkshire took us 3.5 hours last Sunday, and today was meant to be the reverse of that, 4 hours to Gloucester. 2 hours would get us halfway to Stoke-on-Trent where I wanted to check out the china shop. Alas that took 4 hours to SoT 😵‍💫. Partly because Murgatroyd (our satnav lady) thought we'd prefer a scenic detour, and partly because the M6 was very congested in places.

On the bright side, I found a lovely Royal Albert mug for £12 (less than half price). I love a bargain! It was from a set of 5 mugs which they reproduced as part of a centenary celebration. Mine is Spring Meadow from the 1920s. I presume the set got broken up for some reason. If I bought the single mug with a box it would have cost me £37. Hopefully it gets home in one piece.

The trip to Gloucestershire from there was driven mostly at 20 mph for the first hour. We arrived at 5:30pm having been on the road sine 9:30am. Admittedly we had a couple of stops, but we could have got to Melbourne in that time! Ian's leg is tired from hovering over the accelerator and brake. He's a trooper!

Our accommodation feels very luxurious. It is pretty modern inside. Their place is an old barn from the late 1700s. Our place was originally old dairy milking sheds. They were rebuilt in the 70s and used as garages for vintage cars. I think only some of the original building was able to be reused. The bricks out the front are modern. They bought the place a couple of years ago and renovated into a bnb. It has a dishwasher and a washing machine, which is currently in use. Some things don't change on holidays!

      Toiletbreak 2

      16 augustus 2022, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Even 3 kwartier pauze na 3,5 uur rijden.

It all started in 1755 !

      9 augustus 2023, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

      The birth place.

This 'off the grid' holiday break opportunity stems from the foresight of Liverpool merchants from nearly 300 years ago!

Traffic was heavy on the trip south. In front of us a single woman was fortunate to gain the service of a renowned face from Facebook Robb to assist her in navigating the first five locks.
Bless his daily efforts to help people on their way. In fact, contra to CRT regulations, he deliberately left the paddle open to fill the lock for US..
      Big thank you from me.

Our gain was lost after extending our lunch break. 2 boats jumped ahead, so it caused further delays on the next set of locks.
But hey, we are chilling off the grid enjoying the moment.

Landed off the grid start point

      2 augustus 2023, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

An earlier rise to farm the corgis to our daughter before navigating the security queues @ CPH. Stats not bad at 30 mins from drop off to leaving the extra 3rd World security check at terminal E.😉
The good weather took a rain check, which revealed its colours on arrival at Manchester. The standard baggage delay ensured our departure missed by 2 minutes at the train terminal. On a positive note, saved 18 € on delayed ticket! 🤭
Arriving at Stone, the clouds had relented, so no dripping wet clothes. Short trip to my mums by taxi spent down digging old school memories from my early youth! The taxi driver was from the same school year & school! Names of pupils and former teachers throwen about, revealed we were at different inflexions of the scale .
Didn't realise the old memory cells were still functioning , 😆
In all trip time 8 hrs!

      Standon Church

      10 augustus 2023, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Squeezed between a working Canal Boat and a poor man's cruiser, it felt like we were breaking equitte! Our hemp deflectors were literally kissing both our neighbours' deflectors. A short walk to my favourite Marks & Spencer food shop revealed that boaters usually left a good meter between mooring line🤫
To avoid issues, we shipped out early to our destination - Standon Church.
After a sediate cruise enjoying the warm sunny weather, we arrived at our destination. Reality was a nerve-wracking walk, dodging high-speed vehicles exceeding 60km/hrs along the country lane.
The steep rise to the church revealed an enchanting view of the countryside beyond the ancient graveyard. Wandering among the graves presented the curse of child mortality from earlier times. Revealing the curse strikes both poor and rich! Note that all these graves indicate the local gentry. Poor families couldn't afford burial sites. Records dated back to 1311😶😶.
After a safe return to our Angela, the cruise continued to a final pub lunch before returning to Stone for our final night.

      Final Day

      11 augustus 2023, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

So, another vacation draws to a close! Off the grid works for me. Visiting glimmers of former times, sinks home the advances we have accomplished the last 200 years.
Unfortunately, time and events reveal that we have not learned the lessons. Mankind's greed to satisfy his grievance affects the future of all, especially our planet Earth.

Our final journey started smoothly, returning Angela to her waiting sisters !

Then, the everyday issues appeared! Booked taxi to collect us from my mother's, allowing a 20-minute window to the train station.
Fortunately, my instincts suspected a delay confirmed after ringing to the taxi firm. Thanks, guys, for the update. Plan B executed without a hitch, thanks to mums neighbour.

Well, it Friday! Feeder train 3 minutes late, Fortunately, connection to Manchester was on the same platform (3&4). So, the guard shut the doors as we ventured into the packed coach!

Well, Manchester airport security lived up to its reputation! Warning notice advised passengers to remove all usual suspect objects. Failure to comply would enforce a 30-minute delay before resolution of the offending objects. Stuttered through without any extra inspection.

I am grateful that my Scottish principles pushed me to take the cheaper EasyJet option. SAS cancelled their flight. The usual 30-minute delay was also included, now we jutted wanted to get home.

So the final hurdle was the Danish Immigration check point, poorly manned on a late Friday evening.

      Trip over.....

      There and Back Again

      28 mei, Engeland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Our only lock for the day came early in our journey, a jigsaw worthy scene and, as is often the case, friendly boaters heading the other way. The rain was set in for the morning but spirits were not dampened.

A few old large houses overlook the canal with rather an air of Toad Hall to them, but Toad, Mole, Ratty and Badger did not make an appearance today.

The canal follows a much more wiggly route with many blind bends. Having met relatively few oncoming boats over the last few days of course today would be the day with the most traffic. The skipper had to manoeuvre the boat to allow numerous others to pass the other way, inevitably at the narrowest points.

Passing over the Brindley Bank aqueduct, while it may lack some of the splendour of the Llangollen aqueducts, it is still an amazing feat of engineering given its age. A sharp bend took us into the outskirts of Rugeley and past some interesting and varied gardens. On the other side of the town we stopped to fill up with water and then for lunch.

Shortly after our lunch stop we encountered the remains of Armitage Tunnel. The roof was taken off in the 70s due to subsidence, but it is still a tricky, dark, narrow section. With no clear view of the other end, it is necessary to send crew forward to check that the way is clear before radioing back to the skipper. A short while later we passed the Armitage Shanks factory with the smell of fired porcelain in the air.

On the other side of Armitage it was time to wind and thankfully no other vessels appeared to complicate matters. Back past the factory, through the narrows and into Rugeley we were all rewarded with the sight of a kingfisher shooting past the boat and several times shooting out in front of the boat as we neared its perch. A little too fast and small to photograph.

We moored for the night just before the aqueduct.

      Shugborough Estate

      5 september 2018, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well that was a little unexpected.
Shugborough is a very large estate that the National Trust took control of it from Staffordshire Council authority last year.

It’s remarkably intact, Mansion, Farm, Estate, Follies, ruins, Cat Monument, etc, etc.

Belonging to the Anson family since 1642 (including Admiral George Anson, famous for circumnavigating the world and capturing a Spanish Silver ship in 1743.)

      He made a packet.

The NT have start to put their stamp on the place: parking, shop, garden centre, cafe, gardens.

For all those Women Weekly followers Patrick Lichfield, 5th Earl and the famous fashion photographer gifted the estate to the National Trust.
Death duties are a real game changer.

Everyone has probbaly seen his photographs, the Royals, Dianna, Mike Jagger, Lulu and all the rest.
