      Avondje met Lon en Cecilia, Lon is de lokale Citroen specialist die met z'n 1964 DS afgelopen jaar ook in Amsterdam en Frankrijk was. Met de witte break scheuren we af en toe door SC op zoek naar onderdelen voor de boot, want we hebben al sinds vorig jaar een zeiltochtje gepland.       Crazy Quilt

      Iedere 1e zondag van de maand is er de Sunday Antiques Fair hier downtown. Gelukkig maar want als hij wekelijks zou zijn zouden we met vier koffers terugkomen. Deze keer kochten we, naast allerlei kleine dingetjes, ook deze Crazy Quilt, zo genoemd omdat de patronen veel wilder zijn dan van de traditionele quilts. Deze vorm was populair eind 1800 en geïnspireerd door de borduurtechnieken die uit Engeland kwamen em ook door de Japanse kunst, Een deskundige schreef ons:"Crazy quilts werden gemaakt van mooie stoffen. Kun je ook hier zien, er zit veel zijde in. Dat is ook wat hier vergaan is. Het waren meestal "show-offs" en werden gebruikt om in de parlor over een bank te hangen. Zo konden de bezoekers niet alleen zien, dat er kostbare stoffen voor kleding, zijde, fluweel was gebruikt, maar ook dat de vrouw des huizes genoeg personeel had en dus tijd om te handwerken.       Op weg naar de Blitzer gallery

      Op weg naar de Blitzer Gallery in de voormalige Wrighley kauwgum fabrieken. Prachtig industrieel gebouw met veel creatieve studio's, leuke sfeer. Birgitt plukt zo hier en daar wat wilde bloemen. Nou ja, wild...in ieder geval niet uit de voortuinen. Een van de favoriete knipplekken is de lokale kweker waar heel wat door het hekwerk steekt en Birgitt trimt het zorgvuldig bij. Iemand moet tenslotte voor het onderhoud zorgen :-) We hebben in ieder geval steeds een mooi boeket op tafel.Read more

      Uiteraard is Birgitt aan het schilderen, het deck is weer omgetoverd tot atelier, en ik heb me weer bij de tafeltennisclub aangesloten, drie ochtenden in de week met veel lol een balletje slaan. En Billie bewaakt weer als vanouds de achtertuin. Alsof we niet zijn weggeweest :-)Read more

      How much is that doggie in the window?

      Billie is hier geliefd, er zijn behoorlijk wat honden en hondenliefhebber in Santa Cruz. Ook van de wat ruigere soort...Wel jammer is dat honden in Amerika vrijwel nergens binnen mogen in restaurants. Uitzondering is de BBQ Mission en we herinneren ons ook een Chinees restaurant in San Francisco vorig jaar maar verder: sorry, tenzij het een service animal is. Die zijn er dus inmiddels steeds meer en volgende keer gaan we ook kijken hoe we Billie kunnen upgraden tot dat niveau. Of misschien telt ook de passieve vorm, een hond die geserviced wordt?Read more

      Huisje kopen?

      En uiteraard zijn we altijd geinteresseerd in de lokale OG markt en doen we het spelletje 'wat kost nou zo'n huis'. Zoals deze, een paar deuren verderop in de straat, behoorlijk vervallen, moet helemaal worden uitgebroken, woonoppervlak iets meer dan 100 m2 en de vraagprijs: 875.000 dollar.... Overigens zijn de garages hier vaak net zo groot als de huizen hoewel er zelden een auto in staat, meestal is het een opslagplaats geworden, vandaar de regelmatige garage sales.
      Er staat hier trouwens veel te koop, wellicht een teken dat de markt hoog is en mensen graag willen verkopen, maar het lijkt ook weer niet snel te gaan, de huizen in de buurt staan in ieder geval al sinds wij er zijn te koop en we zien ook weinig 'SOLD' bordjes. Er zijn zelfs stukken grond te koop in een aardige buurt waar je al minstens 8 ton voor moet betalen en dan moet je nog gaan bouwen....
      Verder is het net als overal: voor 1.6 miljoen, dus een beetje het dubbele bedrag heb je een fantastisch historisch gebouw met 300 m2 oppervlak, schitterend gelegen. Wel bekeken maar we aarzelen nog :-)      Read more

      All Packed Up

      Lots of hellos and goodbyes this week. Made it back to Quaker Men's Coffee, the Redwood Community, and Friend's Meeting. We also had some pleasant dinners with good friends. It has been nice being back.

      Augie and I got out paddling with friends Greg and Alexander. We headed out searching for Parasitic Jaegers and chanced into a pair of Humpback whales. I keep forgetting how much life there is out in the Monterey Bay.

      Spent a couple of days catching up with the yard work. Five hours using a Shop Vac to clean the copious dates from the gravel. One of those things one cannot possibly have imagined growing up in the Midwest. We've also set up a trellis for some new bougainvillea plants.

      Augie has been busy setting things up for Saigon and studying for the GRE. We now have an Airbnb with a nice balcony street view and parking for our bikes. $25 per night.

      We'll spend the first three nights there before beginning our ride north.
      Funny, the last time we were on motorcycles together was in Sri Lanka with Sophie and Nancy. We'll be missing them on this adventure. Here's a link to remember that epic trip!

      Yesterday I surprised Nancy with a Nespresso machine. It is just like the machines we used in Amsterdam and Ghent the past couple of summers. We've been together pretty much every day for the past two years of traveling. I figure about 770 out of 780 days. It will seem strange to be on the road without her. We've grown dependent on one another as we've been traveling. I'm sure she's feeling a bit off being left behind too. Good thing I'll be traveling with Augie and at least she'll have really good coffee!

      Flights leave Wednesday out of SFO. Next note will be from Ho Chi Minh City!

      Day 30

      Well. What a month that was!

      Our last day riding was a microcosm of all the day's rides from the previous month; a little highway, a little dirt, a country lane, villages, small cities, beautiful landscapes, and one huge city. The day was also the most sketchy of our ride. Two trucks approaching fast, passing side by side and forcing us off of the pavement. Twenty minutes of rush hour on a single lane road with cars, scooters, and bicycles approaching and again leaving us little room for error. Becoming separated in Hanoi traffic (the first and only such moment of the whole trip) and making it to the rental offices on our own. Ending our day sitting in little plastic chairs by the roadside and toasting to the conclusion of a great adventure.

      I am so glad that our son invited me on this trip. One of the very best months of my long/short life.

      Augie has moved on to Chang Mai Thailand and will be utilizing a live/workspace as he finishes up his applications for work and grad school. I'm now back in Santa Cruz. Yesterday Nancy met me at the airport with a kiss, flowers, and snacks. She fed me a delicious dinner, helped me unpack, and generally treated me like a king. This afternoon I meet with Don for lunch. This weekend we enjoy an outing in Elkhorn Slough with friends. Saturday we visit Alma to plan for Thanksgiving. Sunday it's back to QM. The nice routine.

      And next? A whole, new adventure begins just one month from today when Sophie, Augie, Nancy, and I meet in the Delhi Airport.      Read more

      Day 1

      Off to the Subcontinent

      Subcontinent. Who calls India that anyway? British probably.

      We're all packed and off again. Our friend Don just dropped us off at SFO. California to Vancouver followed by a short, 14 hour flight to Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi. Sophie met us here with a box of macarons given to her by a person who owns a french bakery in the airport.(see photo) It seems Sophie helped this woman load her bag in the airport shuttle and was repaid in confections! Augie is currently in route from a small town Laos to Thailand and will meet us at the airport in Delhi.

      As usual our plan is anything but simple.

      Keoladeo. Driver meets us at the airport and drives us four hours to the Iora Guest House in Biratpur. We take day trips to Chand Boari Stepwell, the Taj Mahal, and frequent visits to the nearby Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary.

      Southern India. We fly from Delhi to the south Indian city of Kochi where we join this Intrepid Travel tour. I am particularly interested in the food tours. Sophie is looking for block printing places, Augie likes the temples, and Nancy is just taking it all in. https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us/india/souther…

      Mumbai. We fly to Mumbai and attend the week long wedding of the nephew of our dear friends John (Jules) and Varsha. Nancy and I will also be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary on New Year's Eve. After all of the celebrating Sophie leaves us and flies back to the States. :(

      Rajasthan. We fly to Jaipur and take a circuitous route exploring Bundi, Bikaner (camel festival), to Jaisalmer and everything in between. Sometime in there Augie flies back to the States. :(

      The Punjab. Train to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple and (perhaps) rent motorbikes to explore the foothills of the Himalaya from Dharamshala to Shimla.

      Exit Indira Gandhi Airport and return to Santa Cruz in early February.

      Whew!
