    Gilroy for the night

    September 14 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We’re awake and refreshed from our night stay in Gilroy! We couldn’t find further (affordable) accommodation last minute in Santa Cruz so we decided to stay one night in a hotel in Gilroy because camping wasn’t an option for Theo (who is just now recovering from a small fever).

Fun fact: Gilroy is also known as Garlic city because they have garlic plantations/farms in the area so everrrrything smells so strongly of fresh garlic bread

Today we drive to Carmel by the Sea and tomorrow we go to Monterey. We’re staying in an Airbnb in Salinas which is a 20min drive from those two places and much cheaper than staying in Monterey.

I really enjoyed Santa Cruz. Being by the ocean is so relaxing and really helped lift my mood. Theo loves it too! Yesterday we drove to some forest with redwood trees but unfortunately didn’t get to explore because Theo had his fever and was not in a good mood. We gave him some medicine and decided to drive to capitola village instead. He seemed to be happy in Capitola village which was right by the ocean and full of bright colors and lively music. There was a wine festival on that we were unaware of so it was quite crowded, but not an issue for us.

We looked at a lot of stalls of local art and a lot of it was VERY cool that it’s such a pity we can’t bring it all back to Germany.

Read more

    US west coast beach day

    October 7, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

From Pink Bermuda beaches and the long warm Florida beach to the cold waters of the Pacific on the west coast of the US. This coastline remind me so much of the western cape except for the Star spangled banner on most porches.

Each of these are beautiful in its own ways, no doubt doubt we will find ourselves on a lot of beaches over the next few months, i hope they will all take our breath away like this one.

P.S. Spot the girl on the beach who's use to Bermuda summers and not California summer.

Santa Cruz- Natural bridges state park

    October 7, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After a great sleep in, we head to the beach with the boys and Louis. Rather chilly but scenic. You know you are from Bermuda if everyone is wearing bikini's and you sit with a hoodie.

Me and Dolf went for a walk along the coast, Saw seagulls, butterflies and a sea-lion. Remind me of South Africa's coast.

Packing up the boys are somewhat a challenge with sand over the sandwiches and pretty much everywhere.

Roadtrip 2.1: Sophie, Silvetta and me

    June 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Juhuuu, another renting car, another roadtrip! We were a bit disappointed that it wasn't pink so we changed the planned name of Rosetta to Silvetta and off we were! It is such a difference to sing along to silly songs when you are two. It's so so nice that Sophie is with me. We stopped at places we liked, had lunch in a very English pub, visited a bunker, a lighthouse and went to the mistery spot. It is somewhere in the woods where the compass needle does funny things (that's what they say.) So everything is very steep and queer. You are in a cabin, all is tilted at a 17° angle. Your brain does not get it so you are a bit dizzy, you walk like a drunk and are surprised when the water is running upwards. With the very bad jokes of our guide (it reminded me of the tunnel tour back in Perth) this was a very funny thing to do. We arrived in Santa Cruz, our first stop and ended the day with some delicious fish on the beach - what more to ask for!Read more

    The Last Night... damn!

    November 6, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A last night treat away from The Partridge Family, a RV Park with camping places underneath tall Coastal Redwoods, not Sequoias, we’ve learnt that much, it was a very beautiful spot.

It should have been very peaceful too, it was except for a constantly yapping dog whose owners probably thought it was having an intelligent conversation with them, it probably was seeing each yap consisted of more syllables than any of the grunts they uttered.

The place was probably wasted on us though because we had to leave early.
We weren’t that far from San Francisco but experiencing the traffic here we count distances in hours not miles.
This drive was no exception especially in peak hour, just another 8 lane highway crawl, though a few sections did open up so we did too.
All that driving through South Dakota, Nebraska and Arizona didn’t go to waste, it was pedal to the metal for a while then hit the anchors hard to stop 5 tons of RV rear ending the commuting class.

Good luck and a solid break foot got us back to Cruise America without one scratch on the RV and that was after many thousands of miles through desert, mountains, cities, deserts, mountains, etc... it goes on like this for a while and it was all good.

    Bonny Doon

    March 18 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

We drove up Highway 1 through Big Sur hoping to enjoy spectacular coastal views, but the fog meant it was hard to see much of anything. Still beautiful.
Our final weeks in the US were spent catching up with family and organizing ourselves for the big move to New Zealand. We’ll miss this side of the family SOOOO much! Love you guys.Read more

    Santa Cruz

    September 12 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We arrived here yesterday afternoon and it was unbelievably hot - a full 10 degrees difference between here and Yosemite. Because of the heat, we headed straight to the beach and threw ourselves into the ocean. The cold water was incredibly satisfying and Theo was both excited and terrified at the strength and roar of the ocean waves. We stayed long enough to watch the sunset and also watched the moon rise above the lighthouse further left of us.

Once Theo was in bed, we ate seafood for dinner and went to bed, freshly showered and rejuvenated.

    Santa Cruz

    April 12 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C
