      Riverboat Discovery

      September 8, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌫 12 °C

Yep it is touristy but it was an enjoyable day. Weather wise it could not have been a more perfect day.
The riverboat was a paddle boat. We watched a bush float plane display, visited the home and kennels of the late Susan Butchart, an Iditarod champion, (we watched the dogs in action - not pulling a sled because of the lack of snow but a quad. They got very excited when the were harnessed up to the quad and obviously loved pulling it. Those who missed out went ballistic) and were immersed in the Athabascan Culture at mock Chena River native village.
Like I said it was very touristy but interesting.
With the weather as it was today and the vibrancy of the colours it is so hard to imagine that in perhaps just two months the winter weather will have set in, the river starting to freeze over and everything will be white. Locals will use the river as their winter highway for dog sleds. Would love to see it but it won’t happen this trip I don’t think.

      Athabascan Introduction

      June 4, 2014 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 54 °F

At breakfast in the Princess Fairbanks River Lodge we were surprised to learn that until 8:30 AM one could not order from a menu, but only from the buffet, which cost $16 per person. Glenda's omelet was claimed by a man who came into the line after us, but she quickly corrected the mistake. The riverboat cruise on the Chena River was far more than just a cruise; it was an excellent introduction to the varied elements of Alaskan culture and history. As we cruised down the river, we stopped to hear presentations on bush pilots, dog sledding and native culture. The presenters were on the bank of the narrow, shallow river, and their words were broadcast to the entire boat by wireless microphone and television. We stopped for more than an hour at the reproduction of a native Athabascan village. Young people demonstrated elements of hunting, housing and folkways. Another presentation won Glenda's heart. Laura Alloway, a contender in this year's Iditerod dog sled race, had dogs with her and discussed her preparations for the race. Back on shore we enjoyed a delicious lunch of beef stew, apple-pecan-goat cheese salad, and a rich chocolate brownie. During lunch, four-time Iditerod winner Lance Mackey spoke to the crowd about his recovery from throat cancer and his Iditerod victories.Read more

Day 37 Ends @ the Pump House

      June 8, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Mui chipped a tooth while we were @ Denali NP. Nothing serious, but he wanted to have it checked out to make sure there wasn’t an underlying issue that needed to be looked at.

This morning was his appointment, so we set the day aside for further provisioning, chores, and errands, including a haircut for me. The wait at the barber was too long, so Mui’s going to try again for his cut tomorrow when the shop opens up.

The weather was overcast and much cooler today ... with occasional rain showers ... one of which started just as we arrived at the Pump House for dinner. No al fresco dining on the terrace as planned.

The restaurant is housed in a reconstructed pump house associated with gold mining operations in the area ... with an ambiance reminiscent of “... an 1890s Gold Rush motif and atmosphere which was associated with the ‘Rip Roaring’ but still Victorian Era in Fairbanks.” The place was hopping — especially the Oyster Bar in the Senator’s Saloon. Glad we had a reservation ... sorry we didn’t get to dine with a view of the Chena River.

      ————————————

For those interested in such things ... Mui ordered a red Zinfandel from Oregon; I ordered the Kassik’s Beaver Tail blonde beer. We shared an order of Fried Alaskan Barley-Coated Calamari served with two sauces ... marinara and lemon butter. My main course was an herb-crusted halibut with pan fried potatoes, spinach, portobello mushrooms, apples, grape tomatoes, asparagus ... in a lemon butter sauce. It was good, but I’ve had better halibut elsewhere. Mui was very pleased with his reindeer medallions, served with a berry demi-glaze, polenta, and chef’s veggies. For dessert, we shared a chocolate mousse ... tasty, but the portion was too big for just the two of us.
