    • CoSprings: Downtown Holiday Cheer

      December 8, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Cold day, though the temp was not bad. It was the stiff breeze that made it uncomfortable to be outdoors during the day. Nonetheless, we bundled up and went out after nightfall to add to our "holiday cheer" memories. Luckily, by that time the wind had died down so that we could wander around in reasonable comfort.

This time we drove into downtown Colorado Springs to check out the lights. We parked near Acacia Park where the Colorado Springs Christmas Tree is located. Strolling through the park, we found the ice skating rink ... which was doing brisk business. With the shops closed on this Sunday night, the streets were quiet.

We don't make it a habit to go inside a hotel unless we are staying there ... or there is a pressing need to do so 😉 We made an exception in the case of The Antlers, a Wyndham property that is the third one to sit on the site ... the original hotel by that name was built first in 1883 and then again in 1901 after a fire destroyed the first building. The lobby was dazzling, to say the least.

After leaving The Antlers, we looked for a place that might be open and serving hot chocolate. No luck. I guess Sunday night after dinner is not a good time to be out and about in Colorado Springs on a cold winter night. But we saw what we came to see, so a good outing from our perspective.

    • CatC 4052 It Is

      June 27, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Normally, we prefer to book veranda cabins as I spend so much of my time on the ship sitting out there ... enjoying the fresh air and the sound of the ocean as the ship cleaves through the water.

Not this time. With so much of the itinerary calling on ports as we make our way around Australia, we decided to just book an oceanview cabin.

Here's the funny thing. We unintentionally booked the exact same cabin — #4052 — that we had on Regatta's sister ship Nautica when we did the Northern Glow and Vikings & Czars Grand Voyage in 2019.

    • PCR Testing Scheduled

      June 28, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

Back in March, we received an email from Quark outlining their COVID-19 precautions to embark Ultramarine. Those prerequisites for embarking the ship remain in place nearly three months later.

The requirements are fairly stringent ... especially considering that Canada has loosened its requirements considerably. We need to have proof of vaccination with some small print around getting a booster. Plus we need to get a PCR test ... not once, but twice in the span of three days.

I understand why Quark has these requirements. After all, we will be off in the High Arctic. Medical services won't be readily available in those waters.

      We have no problems complying.

We are vaxxed and boosted ... and scheduled to get our second boosters mid-July.

The embarkation PCR will be done by Quark's medical team when we join our group at the pre-expedition hotel on 1 August. Thus, we needeed to only figure out the PCR test required to be taken within three days prior to joining the group.

29 July ... our travel day to Toronto ... the earliest date on which we can do the first PCR test. Time to research options.

We were hoping to test at our local lab and then continue onto DEN for our flight to Toronto. With the current travel woes, however, the schedule was going to be a tad too tight. Scratch that off the list.

Air Canada has a PCR home kit. Unfortunately, it requires coordinating with a courier to get the sample to a lab in Toronto. Scratch that off the list.

DEN has a testing clinic. Alas, regular PCR test results take 3-5 days ... ridiculous. The Rapid PCR test costs $250pp ... ridiculous ... especially since less expensive options are available. Scratch that off the list.

So what did we decide to do? Fly to Toronto and visit a SwitchHealth Clinic for their PCR test ... results same day or the next day ... CAD$158 (less expensive when converted to USD). The clinic at Union Station is within 15-minute walking distance to the condo ... convenient.

Our appointments are scheduled for 9a on 30 July. The ASMO account we need to receive our results is already set up online. Now, we just need to show up to get our "nasal cavities" stirred.

Ahhh! The trials and tribulations of travel during COVID-19 times.

    • LF: Bye-Bye Bags

      December 5, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Despite the notice we received yesterday that our Luggage Forward pick-up window for today was noon to 5:00p, the UPS driver rang our doorbell at 10:44a. No worries ... we were ready for him.

We opened the garage door and the driver came in with his cart. Five minutes later, not only were our bags no longer in the garage, but the UPS truck was already on its way to the next stop on its route.

I have already received a notification from Luggage Forward that our bags have been picked up. The message includes a link that we can use to track the real-time progress of our shipment.

Eight more sleeps and a wake-up left before we set off on our adventure.

    • NCL Upgrade Bid Game

      August 15 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

      Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Isn’t that what they say? So, when we received an email from NCL today to bid for an upgrade for our TransAtlantic cruise, we decided to play the game ... especially since we won't be charged for the bid unless it is accepted.

I was surprised that all of the eligible categories — except one — were in The Haven ... NCL's "ship-within-a-ship" class of staterooms. The one exception was the Club Balcony. The differences between this category and the veranda we have booked isn't worth a bid IMHO. So, we crossed that one off the list and focused on the others.

Some of The Haven cabins were simply out of our price range — like the deluxe owner’s suite. Others were way too big for our needs — like the two-bedroom family villas. Yet others were not suitably located — like the courtyard or forward-facing penthouses. That left the aft-facing penthouses with large balconies — perfect!

This TransAtlantic cruise is simply transportation for us. And at our current fare, it is inexpensive transportation at that. Keeping that in mind, we decided to submit the minimum bid amount.

We might well miss out on an upgrade at the rates we submitted. NCL’s upgrade tool even rated our bids as such by showing them as being "poor." No matter. We really don’t want to spend too much more for this cruise. As nice as it would be to have the extra indoor space for what promises to be a cold-weather crossing, we’ll be satisfied with what we have booked if the upgrade bid is not accepted.

When will we find out if one of our bids is successful? Anytime between now and just before sailaway on 3 December.

    • MIA-DEN Logistics ✓

      August 28 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

After many months of checking for a reasonably-priced flight to return us to Colorado Springs at the end of our fall-winter trip, today we made a decision and took the plunge.

Since the fares on 15 December — the day we disembark NCL's Encore in Miami — were higher than we wanted to pay, Mui agreed to postpone his 12/16 appointment. Thus allowing us to book award tickets on the 16th instead ... on the 8:00a non-stop flight on United ... for a very reasonable number of miles.

True, flying out on the 16th means having to stay overnight in Miami on the 15th. But we knew that we could do so for less than the cost of the airfare we'd have to shell out to fly out on disembarkation day. So, we now have a hotel reservation near the Miami Airport ... booked through United's hotel portal.

Both the airfare and the hotel are fully refundable. If we find a better deal, we can cancel and rebook. In the meantime, it's nice to have these logistics checked off the to-do list.
