National Museum of the American Indian

Nach dem African American Museum war dieses hier … anders. (Ich wollte eigentlich zum Kapitol, entschied mich aber um. Und da stand zufällig dieses Museum rum). Hier hat sich auch ein Architekt verwirklicht…
Am interessantesten zu Beginn noch die originalen Kleidungsstücke. Daneben ein Raum, der an Beispielen auflistete, wie sehr das indianische Einzug in den amerikanischen Alltag genommen hat. Und dann noch der Abschnitt, der sich mit der Vertreibung der indianischen Stämme von der Ostküste in die neugeschaffenen Indianerreservate weiter im Westen befasste. Und da kommt wieder Präsident Jefferson ins Spiel, der sich stark dafür einsetzte. (Jefferson war auch der, der selbst über 400 Sklaven hatte, eine davon schwängerte er gleich 10 Mal.) Sympathischer Mann. Häßlich war er auch noch, nur so nebenbei erwähnt. Knapp 68.000 Indianer wurden vertrieben, zuviele überlebten das nicht. Der letzte Teil war Pocahontas gewidmet. Die gab‘s offensichtlich nicht nur im Disneyfilm. Eine Häuptlingstochter, die den weissen Soldaten/Siedlern half, einen auch heiratet und in London Werbung für das Leben in der neuen Welt machte. Alt wurde sie dort nicht, hat das Wetter nicht vertragen. Im Kapitol hat sie ein Gemälde gewidmet bekommen. Grosses Kino für eine Indianerin.

Compared to the African American Museum, this one was... different. (I actually wanted to go to the Capitol, but changed my mind. And that's where this museum happened to be). An architect has also realized himself here...
Most interesting at the beginning are the original pieces of clothing. Next to it is a room that uses examples to list the extent to which Native Americans have entered everyday life in America. And then the section dealing with the expulsion of the Indian tribes from the east coast to the newly created Indian reservations further west. And that's where President Jefferson comes in again, who pushed hard for it. (Jefferson was also the one who had more than 400 slaves himself, one of them he got pregnant 10 times.) Likeable man. He was also ugly, just to mention that in passing. Almost 68,000 Indians were expelled, not all survived. The last part was dedicated to Pocahontas. Apparently it wasn't just a Disney movie. A chief's daughter who helped the white soldiers/settlers, also married one and promoted life in the new world in London. She didn't get old there - she couldn't stand the weather. A painting was dedicated to her in the Capitol. Great cinema for an Indian girl.Read more
