      Day 5 - It's all about Abe.

      April 26, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

At 3.40am I was rudely awoken by a loud thud, followed by Jackie wailing & crying. I jumped out of bed to find Jackie virtually naked with her backside wedged into the deep gap at the bottom of the door steps. I had to use all of my strength & pull her back out.

HOW? Jackie has been sleeping on the bed above the cab. Apparently she got out of bed & attempted to step down on to a chair, missed her footing & somersaulted on to the floor and then down the steps, at the same time smashing her head into the fire extinguisher. What a sorry mess!

We both got back to sleep & woke up at 6.30 & 8.00am respectively. I went out & found Linda, the campsite manager & paid up for our stopover. Linda was lovely & we hadn’t buggered up the night before. I showered on site, but Jackie was too shy & squeezed into the RV shower. By the way, the campsite was lovely in daylight, it was just a shame we got there so late the previous evening AND my ‘Adventure Sandals’ were getting their first airing of the trip.

After a breakfast of cereal & English muffins (no more skillets for a while), we headed out on the road to Springfield, Illinois, the home of Abraham Lincoln. After some good attempts at going down one way streets the wrong way looking for a car park , we finally decided to stop in a parking space on the road. Only 25c for 30 minutes, another bargain. We spent a dollar.

First stop was the imposing Illinois State Capitol with it’s zinc domes that shown brightly in the sun. There we a few statues in the grounds so I took a photo or 2, particularly of Abraham Lincoln smack bang in front of the building. We investigated as to whether were allowed to look inside & discovered we were allowed to pretty much walk round the whole building. It was stunning, all marble walls & floors, a glass dome & loads of statues. The building still houses the legislative & executive branches o the Government of the State of Illinois.

We then passed The Governor’ house & headed to the Abraham Lincoln historic district. We went into the Old State Capitol, slightly inferior to Illinois State Capitol from the outside, but inside it had the feel more of a museum. I took a photo & we left fearing we might have to pay. We took in the Abraham Lincoln statues dotted all around Union Square Park.

We the entered the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, but quickly left when we were directed to where we could buy tickets. We returned to the RV & drove a couple of blocks to Abraham Lincoln’s house. It was in a road of houses now owned by the US National Park Service & it was free. Abraham Lincoln lived In his house between 1844 & 1861. It was interesting, but Jackie wasn’t happy that they had painted the houses.

A final visit in Springfield was to Oak Ridge Cemetery to visit the Tomb of Abraham Lincoln. Oak Ridge Cemetery is pretty big, because we drove in & managed to get lost. After a quite a lengthy cemetery driving tour, we found our way back out & literally abandoned the RV just entrance & walked back in.

The 117 foot obelisk looked magnificent. As I took a photo, a tour guide came over & said “ You won’t ever get a better time to take a photo. clear blue skies, just a couple of school parties & the blossom in full bloom”. He was right. We then went inside to see the brass statue of Lincoln & his tomb.

We were now all Abe’d out & hit the Highway 55 southbound. We pulled off at a tiny place called Farmersville for Jackie to make a coffee & sandwich. We then carried on Highway 55 which runs side by side with Route 66, so we were able to see some of the Route 66 landmarks, including Pink Elephant Antiques.

We pulled off at Collinsville & somehow managed to miss ‘The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle’. This would be the last time we saw Route 66 whilst in the RV!

We now headed westwards to Cahokia Mounds State National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cahokia Mounds is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American City & is described as one of the greatest cities of the world. Cahokia was larger than London in 1250 AD. The park’s Visitors centre contained displays depicting life back then & lots of Native Americans selling their wares.

Cahokia now consists of 80 mounds in 3.5 square miles, but in it’s heyday the city was nearly twice as late. We decided to scale the largest mound - Monks Mound (well I did & Jackie felt obliged to follow). The summit provided us with decent views all around including St. Louis & it’s Gateway Arch. The site is sacred for Native Americans & I am really glad we made the effort to visit.

We then hotfooted it up to Granite City to Walmart for more provisions. Amongst other things, we went in for a dish cloth & came out with a pack of 18 & their smallest bottle of tomato sauce - enough to sink a battleship! We also had never seen so many weirdos (l won’t go into details) all in one place, everyone had something wrong with them or were just absolutely filthy or both - we fitted in well!

At Walmart, I rang the local KOA campsite. They were just closing for the night but agreed to stay on for our arrival. We arrived at 6.00pm & hooked up. It was only now that we discovered that as a consequence of Jackie’s fall, her head had smashed a plastic cover on the inside of the door. Brilliant....that’s some of the deposit lost already!

The site was not as scenic as last nights, but it suited our purposes. A nice hot shower & after a nice cold beer at the outside tables, Jackie cooked Arabiata pasta. We were both asleep around 9.00pm.

      Illinois State Fair

      August 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

This was on at Springfield Illinois. On route 66. We were told it was the big thing to see here. Tried my first corn dog & battered cheese stick. Absolutely disgusting & never having another one of either of those. Listened to the Gettysburg address from Abe Lincoln. He was fantastic, loved his job & spoke only in the first person. Incredible. Also picked up this little kinda ten's machine, real small that I'll start using on my leg (explain that later too). 31deg here need some free way riding on this part. • Day 1

      Springfield Illinois

      June 9, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Our first day of driving after I had PD all day! It was a good start. We did meet some wildlife at a dog park. He wanted to jump in the van! Jeff considered it.

    • Day 7

      Day 7 - The Alamo

      July 11, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today’s drive was a bit long. Around six hours. We started our drive and landed up at Steve Fazio’s again to pick up two amps Doug left for repair. We returned the 2x10 and Doug told him he didn’t like it, which we were informed it had the cheapest speakers possible with smooth cones not to mention it was wired for lower wattage. we then made our way to Springfield.

Like last time in Springfield, we have two rooms at the State House Inn. Since this is the land of Lincoln the hotel has tons of pictures of him throughout including the rooms. We checked in and got ready as we needed to get to a restaurant to meet a blues society guy.

We get to this little brewery/restaurant and this dude runs out and tells us he’s in their beer garden. The menu has like four things and we’re informed it’ll take 45 minutes at least. This is also when the guy says he already ate. So we went to their normal restaurant and all got baby sized salads and talked to him for an hour or so and then headed to the club.

The show overall went great. Bob Keiser of Blues Blast was there and the crowd was good for a Monday. It was also good to have Andrew back and not random bass players. It was a really fun night. We did have a guitarist sit in, named T-Mo or whatever. Doug simply said to me “it’s my turn tonight!” Double guitar shred. During the set Doug’s amp he just got back started making insane noises (video below) so he had to swap for his big amp which he also just got back. That one was fine.

After the gig we tore down and the guitarist said he had a ton of drumsticks which he gave me, all completely shredded up and no use. I tried to leave them but they kept getting handed back to me so I just threw them away. After leaving we wanted to get food and everywhere was closed, even Arby’s which Doug really wanted. We went to a gas station and they had nothing. We even went to Dominos and they wouldn’t let us order for some insane reason, so we finally went to McDonalds and waited in line for an hour.

We finally got back to the hotel and I was exhausted. I pretty much slept instantly.

    • Day 13

      Day 12 - The Alamo

      September 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Unfortunately we did not play in the basement. Regardless, this gig was cool. When we first got there we found out we were super early because they decided to push the gig to 7:30. Plus there was some kind of memorial happening. We decided to go get a sandwich but when we got back everyone wanted to talk to us so we didn’t get to eat. There were people from St. Louis and elsewhere who came out that I recognized.

The set was good, although we played tons of tunes super fast. The big problem was sound. The guy they had put like twenty monitors plus subwoofers and kept upping the volume during guitar solos and such. Ridiculous.

After the gig we went and got some stuff at the gas station then went back to our rooms. Good night overall. By the way, I had half of my sandwich during break.

Yeah, that’s Abe Lincoln. This mural was staring at me all night.

    • Day 117

      Lincoln locations in Springfield

      September 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Was a slightly difficult night for sleep; warm, muggy, then rain and lightning. It was nice to have a relatively cool morning, although it did not last long.
IHOP just happened to be down the street so enjoyed a quick breakfast at really one of Toms favorite breakfast stops. Then drive back until Springfield just to get in a couple of more Lincoln stops.
First was Oak Ridge Cemetry for his tomb. Very well located on a hill in the cemetery. Really well done. You walk through a circular path, much like a masoleum, and there are several niches with sculptures off Lincoln fromm various ages of his life. Tombs for Mary and 3 of the 4 boys they had are here as well. The only son that did survive was buried at Arlington.
Sincere we were already downtown we did a quick drive by you see the state capital building, and finally to take a look at the Lincoln home. Once he left for Washington as president he never actually lives here again. We really enjoyed and appreciated the time we had to reaquaint ourselves with Lincoln and his impact.
Headed back to IHOP, we had dropped the jeep to drive in town. Hooked back up and headed to st.louis, just about 100 miles. We are overnighting at a KOA IN Granite City, which is still in Illinois, north and east of St. Louis. Hot, muggy and so thankful that we have an awesome AC. It was 96°, the all-time record for this day in history was 97°. You can't imagine the discussions we have about who should be walking the pup...or maybe you can! The weather person was very optimistic that tomorrow we would see a record setting temperature!

    • Day 116

      Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum

      September 18, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Drove most of the morning to arrive in Springfield, Illinois at about noon. Had a bit of a hiccup as we tried locking up the RV and couldn't find the door and storage keys. After about 30 minutes they were located but both Tom and we drenched in sweat... Finally got the generator going, animals settled, ands we went into the museum.
We both loved this museum. As you moved through the chronological exhibits you just felt like you got a closer look at house life. It was like reading a book in an afternoon. And we both forgot just how significant he was as a president. Just a great experience AND reminder there we are "all created equal".
Fortunately our overnight stay was right in Springfield so not too far to drive. This overnight was through Harvest Host again. This host was Springfield Beer Company.
Cute little brewery with ready parking lot to navigate and right next to a hamburger place. We were able to get burgers and then head into the brewery to eat then with some local beer and watch football. Unfortunately Las Vegas lost, again.
So warm that we left the generator on so that's we could run the AC. Only downside is collectively both of these units make some noise, so after tossing and turning we turned them off. But it's had us in time to experience a real thunder and lightning show!
