VA, PA, NY, NJ, MA VT travel days

      April 18 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Heading north towards Montreal now. Seen many states, low bridges and tunnels, farm stores, ancient barns, small towns, 1700/1800’s architecture, Amish farmers, Quaker country and so much more! What a drive. Take the slow road…skip the interstates…it’s soooo much better. Thoroughly enjoyed the Hudson Valley! Poughkeepsie, Hudson, Athens, Hyde Park and many many more, all easily accessible to NYC by car or train. The architecture and way of life is so old and slow. In a good way lol.
Had coffee and a snack from the Poughkeepsie Grind and ate at a cute little place in Hudson called Kitty’s. Not a single Walmart or Dollar General the entire ride. There must be some, but none that ever tarnished the landscape of the quaint little towns. Highly recommend! Spent our last 3 nights in the US in Plattsburgh NY. Tomorrow we are back in Canada baby!

      White Mountains State Park

      September 3, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      Murder on North Winooski

      July 25, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Something had tipped Herb over the edge at 63 North Winooski and NBC wanted to be sure to catch a first sighting.
Meanwhile, our young holiday makers were making their own weather with a cycle ride and a swim in the algae plagued Lake Champlain.Read more

      VT - Hamilton Falls Trail

      September 14, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Hamilton Falls is located in Jamaica State Park - one of Vermont's State Parks along the VT100.

It's a spectacular tiered waterfall with a jaw- dropping 125-foot drop. The out and back trail (roughly 10km) starts as an easy trail on a disused railtrack but went up quite steeply after 2 miles on a path with rocks and roots and lots of water due to the downpours the day before.

The water source for the Falls is Cobb Brook which literally slices its way sideways through deeply cut gorge walls before landing at the bottom.

It was a great hike and scenery. Beautiful scenery and both Hamilton Falls and the West River were roaringly loud.

Can't do without some little titbits
👆 The area around Jamaica State Park was once an important hunting and fishing area along a major transportation route for the Sokoki Abenaki people, who travelled by canoe between the Connecticut River and Lake Champlain.
👆And then there’s the site of The Salmon Hole Massacre. In 1748, the site was one of several areas where skirmishes between British soldiers and Frenchmen and American Indians took place.
While relaxing near the river, 80 British soldiers on a scouting trip from Fort Dummer were ambushed by a small band of French men and Native Americans. Six of the soldiers were killed in what became known as the Salmon Hole Massacre.
👆The trail along West River was once a precarious railroad between Londonderry and Brattleboro.
The railroad was built with cheap, narrow-gauge track to save money, and it quickly became known as 36 miles of trouble for many reasons.
The wood-burning locomotives were not powerful enough to pull the cars up the narrow tracks. Passengers would often get out and walk along the tracks because it was faster than riding. Construction and maintenance problems, along with heavy snow and constant flooding meant that the trains were never on time, and wrecks were common. It got abandoned in 1927

And yes, the trail went through a shady area with lots of fertile soil for mushrooms. So many different ones and not one I recognised. Need some lessons from Kinsey, our guide in Yellowstone 😂

      VT - Mount Equinox

      September 15, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Mount Equinox is the highest mountain in the Taconic Range, the climb is steep and unrelenting. It's about a 1000m ascent and the same down.
Apparently, the first half is pure incline like setting your treadmill at 15%. The second half is more stairmaster-like with stepping up rocks.

Hence we decided not to do it 😃

But there is a very nice but very steep drive up to the top - Skyline Drive. Surely one of the most expensive private toll routes in the world but totally worth it for the views and saving my knees going down.

When we got up the summit, the temperature had plummeted to 8 degrees with a keen wind
But the views are stunning even if the Green Mountains are still a bit greener than we would have liked. But there are hints of Autumn colours coming through.

From the summit we took a small hiking trail to Lookout Rock. Not a bad view of Manchester Village but can't beat the 360 degree view from the top.

Driving down I was glad when we reached the bottom. The high revs of the car engine didn't sound nice 😬

VT - mooching around in Manchester

      September 15, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Enjoying a lazy afternoon wandering around Manchester, soaking up the sunshine in the crisp autumn air and tasting some local seasonal produce - apple cider doughnut and apple cider.

Autumn is definitely here. Seems everyone and everywhere is gearing up for Halloween too. So many pumpkins!!Read more

VT - VT100 scenic byway drive

      September 16, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

At 216.6 miles, Vermont’s longest state highway is also one of the most scenic and well-loved, meandering through the Green Mountains, as well as charming New England villages with all the quintessential Vermont goodness that we have been dreaming of.

VT100 runs straight through the centre of the state, from north to south. It's a actually quite hard to choose where to stop. There are so many places worth visiting and exploring. Can't do all, at least not in three days!

👆 Wilmington - a small town at the southern edge of the Green Mountain National Forest.
👆 Woodstock - named after Woodstock in Oxfordshire. The town was first settled in 1761. It's a very pretty town of renovated brick and clapboard Georgian houses. Restoration of the town was a result of the generosity of philanthropists such as the Rockefeller family.
It's a gorgeous place to spend some time wandering the streets and along the river.
👆 Quechee Gorge - at 165 ft / 50m deep, the deepest gorge in Vermont. Stunning views from the top.

The VT100 runs until Newport on the Canadian border. We leave it at Stowe where we will spend a few days in the Alpine Mountains of Vermont - hiking and hopefully tasting some of the local craft beers.

      One last thing ...
In 1609, French explorer Samuel de Champlain was the first European to set foot in Vermont. The State's name is derived from the French word for green (vert) and from mountain (mont).
Having driven through the state from South to North - one can totally understand why.
Just would like it to be a little more yellow and red at the moment 😬

      VT - Burlington

      September 18, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Burlington is a city in northwestern Vermont, on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, south of the Canadian border.

The lake was named after the French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who encountered it in July, 1609. Today the lake is the border between the states of New York and Vermont.

French inheritance here (and generally in Vermont) is palpable in many places with information boards both in English and French as well as products in shops include the French description too.

According to our guide book Burlington is a 'must-see' when in Vermont. However, we weren't too impressed with the city.
Maybe the beauty can't be found in a rainy Sunday with the city in Pride fever 🤷

But there are still a couple of titbits to note ...
👆In 1978, the ice cream enterprise Ben & Jerry's was founded in Burlington in a renovated gas station.
👆 Burlington is home to 'Zero Gravity' brewery, the producer of the 'Little Wolf' beer I like 😬

      VT - Montpelier

      September 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Having got up really early to watch the Queen's funeral, we have a long drive ahead of us to reach our next stop in North Conway in New Hampshire.

The plan is stop in a few places to break up the journey.

First up, Montpelier, the state capital of Vermont.
Montpelier has the distinction of being the smallest state capital in the United States, with a population of just over 8,000 people.

Vermont State House is certainly worth a visit. And it amazes me that the public can just walk through the building looking into various governors offices, Representatives' Hall and Senate Chamber.
The State House was built in 1859 in Italian Renaissance Revival Style and has been renovated over two decades at the end of the 20th century.

It's truly a small town but we counted 6 churches around the downtown area. In fact, there are 11 churches.

But there isn't much else worth exploring so it was a quicker pitstop than we anticipated

      To Vermont we go

      February 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ -5 °C

We woke up to Eric Church’s ‘Some of It’ song, which is the alarm song on my phone, at 7.00am, so that we could get ready for our day exploring Vermont. We left home at about 8.30am driving north through some amazing countryside covered in beautiful white crisp snow into the state of Vermont to a little township called Weston.

We have been to Weston 3 times now and it never ceases to take my breath away with its beauty each and every time. Though the temperature was crisp at about -5 degrees, the sun was out and we couldn’t have picked a better day to explore this beautiful township.

We started by exploring the township of Weston, running through the gorgeous snow, having snow fights, staring in amazement at the frozen waterfalls and just taking in all the beauty of this town. Then it was time to explore the Vermont Country Store. This shop has everything you can imagine in it. Pre-covid the store often had many a sample of all its goods, from maple syrup (my favourite), to cheesecake dip, fudge, biscuits and cheese just to name a few. Unfortunately covid has brought an end to that.

From here we went another half hour north to a township of Rockingham where there is another Vermont Country Store. It was only today that I realised there were 2 stores and it was the first time Cathy had visited this store also. Along the way there were 2 covered bridges which we stopped to explore and photograph, such beautiful structures. Dave got to fly his drone for the first time in the states and is getting the hang of it all.

It was then time to explore The Vermont Country Store Kissing Bridge and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pose for a kissing photo. Onwards to look over the shop and get some takeaway lunch from Mildred’s Grill, which was delicious before getting in the car to make the trek home.

Absolutely amazing day topped off by amazing dinner of white chilli chicken cooked by Cathy.

      Perfect perfect day!

So many photos to spread across many blog posts.
