    ... That's the guy, responsible for this mess.
    Today we took the time to investigate Roman city design. We have wandered almost 7 hours through the remains of the third largest Roman city on this earth!
    After Rome, the capital of the Empire, and Pompeii, who was conserved perfectly due to the Vesuvius...it's Timgad!
    And we were proud and lucky to be here..
    ..
    Some dickhead tried to sit on Lieskes bonnet last night, and caused a huge dent. But luckily I could push it out.
    Now, let's keep our fingers crossed ..it will not happen again.
    .
    Also our Algerian fame has followed us until here. And might not end here.
    We are asked for selfies, and publications on social media.
    Even the police offered us a escorte for tomorrow as we leave for Guelma.
    Maybe we should leave early, they might will be asleep...

    So.. only pictures from old rocks.
    Sorry for that.

    Happy days are over???

    Today, they were already waiting for us.
    The police.
    As promised, we get an escorte. And sometimes it was quite funny.
    We do not dare to post footage here, as we might get in trouble. But you can imagine, if you are escorted as the president, it gets funny in different situations.
    But...to be honest, it's no fun at all. You are not free to do what you like. Every say, 20km, there is another police car to escort you, so it's a kind of estafette. For more than 200km...
    And doing so, it's time consuming. Sometimes you have to follow to the "comisariat" other time you have to wait for the next team.
    Also, every team wants to know were you from and what you do as profession, and see your passport.
    I got angry a few times, as some confiscated our passports, but got them back as soon as I said that we are not criminals but tourist..
    ..
    We could not get rid of them, as they insist.
    It's "obligatoire".. "pour votre securité" .. or even.. "sector teroriste"..
    ..
    Our host says that we will not get rid of them untill we leave the country, and we were lucky that we had travelled so long undetected.
    Luckily we are on the end of our Algerian days, because otherwise it would be hard.
    It's no fun discovering a country with the police on your tail.
    We have only 4 or 5 days left. So we will see..
    ..
    Oh.. We arrived in Guelma.
    Tomorrow we go to see again a lot of beauty.

    Guelma and new friends..

    Today we visited some places in and around Guelma.
    Together with Zineddine and Wassim, they are great tourist guides.. ;)
    At first we started with a visit to the Roman Theatre in the city of Guelma. With a nice collection of marbles.
    Also tested the Roman acoustic. What a smart construction!
    After that, we went to an Roman site in the mountains. Called Sellaoua Announa. It was difficult to find, but our guides were luckily on speaking terms with the local people.
    You could ask, you have seen one you have seen them all... but it's always a feeling of a new discovery.
    Especially in Algeria, were you are the only one, walking between these pieces of ancient civilisation(s)..
    As we left, we set of for the next destination, a hidden cave with a underground river, it was so dark, that Zineddine walked into the water. You can imagine what fun we had!
    Bats flying around our head and you could hear the dripping in the lake.
    A magical place.
    But..before we could enter we had to wait. There was police around, and they would certainly ask why we had no escorte.
    We left for the Hamman Debagh.
    But first lunch, were they had a fennik as pet.
    The Hamman was beautiful. Hot water from the volcano, in which we cook two eggs. 10 min. ;)
    Quite funny.
    As the day was not over yet, on our way to an other mountain called, Bouhamdane, we stopped at a lake, to another cave.
    But as we entered, after 30 to 50 metres it went very steep down, and we did not dare to go deeper, with just a 20% power phone light..
    It was asking for problems.
    So we enjoyed just the surrounding and the fact that we are pussies... except Zineddine. He was a dare devil.. (sure!)
    ..
    And.. As we did not went up and down enough, we visited Maouna mountain to see the sunset...
    As you see.. A full program
    Back home a nice shower and a beautiful meal was waiting for us.
    Traditional Charchucha. And even our clothes were washed and sorted!

    Tomorrow it is probably Police escorte again to Annaba.

    City adventure..but different.

    We discovered that leaving a city and new friends, makes it difficult to discover the soul of a new city were you are on your own.
    As in earlier days we always liked being on our own, now we miss the drive people have for their city.
    Even the smallest village, is a home for somebody.
    So. Yesterday be left Guelma and took of to Annaba.
    At first ..it looked like we fooled the police, and had a free drive..
    But... at the first roadblock we won the first price!
    An escorte to Annaba...
    But these were easy. Drive, dump, au revoir!
    ..
    So we went to discover Annaba. On foot.
    We walked almost 6 km to reach the old city.
    Sadly it was Friday. And all closed. But we could imagine how busy and thriving this town would be on a normal shopping day.
    ..
    We also concluded, and this might not be the friendliest thing to say...
    The French did a far more better job in architecture than the Algerians.
    And maybe, the government should invest in keeping this heritage ...
    ..
    Today it might be the last of Algeria.
    We don't know yet if we stay one more day in El Kala and Lake Tonga. Or just pay it a visit and leave the country...

    Algeria...au revoir!!

    Annaba. The last city we visited in Algeria.
    We did not want to leave this magnificent country..Even Lieske did not want to go.
    She refused to start. So we changed the battery. The backup battery of the car replaces the starter battery and she had to.
    We bought with our last dinars a new battery at a car shop just before the Tunisian border and left the old one in Algeria.
    ..
    No police on our tail, so we paid a short visit at Lac Tonga.
    The heaven started to weep as we decided to travel on to Tunisia.
    It is cold, rainy and windy now. Especially as I had to fill in all kinds of formalities at the Algerian customs and Tunisian border.
    Even our body temperature was checked. 😋
    ..
    As the day was long and darkness starts to set in we took a hotel in Tabarka for the night.
    Nika takes a shower and I sit at the reception and try to recap the day.
    ..
    Tomorrow we don't know were we go. But we have some extra days left now, before we sail to Italy. And maybe that's good.
    Because now we can take a slight sniff of this country, and it looks good...
    ..
    Numbers: we travelled 2968km through Algeria.

    different.

    Someway I don't find my spot in Tunisia.
    However the people are nice.
    We were stoped on the road by those who has seen us on Facebook.
    As we park, there is always a few who comes and asks for pictures and selfies.
    But still.. Someway it is not Algeria.
    Am I homesick? ;)
    Today we travelled from Tabarka to Bizerte.
    And tomorrow we are going to start fresh.
    A new country, a new beginning, although we will leave the 12th.
    For the corona capital of Europe; Italy.
    But first...

    And .. what now..???

    Today we discovered Bizerte.
    We visited the medina, the old Harbor and the city.
    But now...there is a dark cloud..
    The only reason we travelled to Tunisia is the boat from Tunis to Italy, to continue our journey.
    But just an hour ago the news was announced that all of Italy is on lockdown.
    So we don't know if we are able to sail, nor if we could embark or even are allowed to travel through Italy..
    We are in doubt, and do not know how we deal with this.
    We could:

    1) sail anyway to Italy, and we will see.
    2) stay (much) longer in Tunisia.
    3) Sail to Marseille, but that would mean the end of the roadtrip..

    Anybody?

    (And no, overland to Egypt is not possible, nor going back to Algeria...)    Lue lisää

    Alea iacta est....

    Today we met Seif and his family in a town called Utica.
    Who knew it existed? .. might be the same as Koewacht. But with a small difference. Utica is one of the oldest Phoenician cities of North Africa.
    Koewacht does not even come near...
    But anyway, again it was the friend from a friend who told a friend that we were on our way through Tunisia. And so we landed on this piece of history.
    I am in doubt which I liked more. Seif and his family and the wonderful lunch his mom made for us...or the remains of the old city.
    I think I will choose the first. As the stones could not cook, speak and laugh!..
    ..
    After the lunch we took of to Tunis.
    The capital of Tunisia.
    I must say.. traffic was again an experience. Especially as Mr Google sent us into small streets with market stalls, and lots of people...
    ..
    But we made it to the hotel, what we had booked for our visa for Algeria.
    As the plan was, to leave the 12th to Salerno, Italy.
    But Italy is now on Lockdown..

    It looks like the boat will sail. But we are afraid we will not be on it.. As there ia a chance that we are not able to move from the harbour or have to stay in a hotel as long as the lockdown of Italy is effected.
    And even if we are allowed to travel, we might get stuck in Bari or Albania, because they want us to get in quarantine..
    So..
    ..
    We decided that we stay in Tunisia, and try to discover this country, which we did not intended to visit longer than 4 days..
    It might gone be now more than three weeks..
    ..
    Tomorrow we try to visit the Dutch Embassy and check what they know.
    But on this moment,
    ...

    29 unplanned days...

    Today it became obvious.
    Traveling to Italy makes no sence at all.
    Not only due to the travel restrictions, but also our plan was to just cros the country and sail to Albania.
    And Albania has closed its border for travel from Italy.
    Game over.
    So. We rebooked our sail for the 9th of April.
    That means 29 days in Tunisia which were not planned.
    What are we going to do?
    Lieske still has a small problem with her prop shaft, so we need to spare her. A bit...
    ..
    Today Seif came to visit us in Tunis, and we just had a nice walk around. What else ? ;)
    We still did not visit Carthago.
    Maybe tomorrow?
    29 days left anyway.. ;)

    We left the capital Tunis.
    And as a fan of old rocks, we went of to visit Carthago.
    The ancient capital of the Punic empire.
    But as we entered the main site we almost had a laugh.
    After visiting Timgad and some hidden gems in Algeria this does not impress.
    So we just have to live with it.

    We have been to Carthago.
    ..
    So.. back into the traffic of the city of Tunis, to go to the south.
    Driving in Tunisia is almost the same as in Algeria, but now i really miss the polite chaos of order of my Algeria.
    The drivers here are impatient en unfriendly, although there is a bit more order.
    But again. I might suffer from a version of homesickness.
    After we left the craziness of the capital's traffic, we approached our destination Nabeul.
    We planned to take a camping here.
    Might be nice sleeping in our Lieske again.
    As we parked at the reception, a man walked by... Goedemiddag...
    Oh yes... Dutch travellers in a Toyota Landcruiser with rooftent...
    Why not. It's Tunisia.
    ..
    Walked a bit, sat a while, stroled along the beach.. having a pizza.
    ..
    Hmmm... dreaming of a nice night in my beloved car.

    As we are counting time, we did almost nothing today.
    Had a long sleep, did some change in the car storage organisation and enjoyed being lazy.
    Went into the city late afternoon, and had a snack for diner.
    We think of staying here for another night , as the place we are is quite nice and safe.
    Lieske sleeps under a few old olive trees, and so do we..
    No hurry. So...No worry.
    ..
    Even in pictures we are lazy.

    Day 50.

    And it was again a lazy day.
    Tunisia starts to implement restrictions on travel and openings hours in cafe and bars.
    So the corona measures has reached Afrika.
    We met some nice young travellers from the Netherlands and Germany.
    As the situation in this village is changing, our fellow travellers left yesterday.
    Tonight I got a what'sapp to join them. So, we try.
    As for now. We are waiting on a quite bad road, at the park national Djebel Zaghouat.

    What a fun is this. Camping together with some youth from Germany and the Netherlands.
    Feeling old. But very accepted.
    Glad we found this wild bunch. Looks like we go and discover Tunisia with the lot.
    I still have to think at our friends in Algeria.

    Madness of fear.

    Today we left the beautiful spot on the mountain of Zaghouan.
    The decent was a bit tricky, but we managed.
    Poor Lieske..
    ..
    We visited or better, tried to visit the Hamam in Zriba. But as we arrived it was all closed due to the Corona.
    So we decided to visit the mountain village of Zriba.
    Poor Lieske ...again..
    A deserted town. Only a few inhabitants and lots of ruins. But.. it was worth a visit.
    We split up.
    Patrick and Lisa, the German couple had business to attend, and wanted to go ahead to Kairouan. We would follow later these days.
    So we, Maarten en Janne in their Landcruiser and we in our old lady cruised around.
    Bargou it was going to be. Because of the tales of a Shepard...
    But there was not much to see. And on the quest of a place to sleep, we found a lake.
    Looked nice, but soon, the village came to look at the strangers, and the wind was so hard, it would be insane to stay.
    So we took of again.
    Asked serval farmers, but all sent us away.
    No hospitality there.
    (Oh Algeria...)
    Anyway. In the end, time was running out, we parked at a meadow next to the main road.
    But again, we were sent away. Busy looking people, on their phones..
    A few miles up, a nice patch. We parked, and started coocking. But could not finish. A car, a motorcycle and three man.
    Interedit! Go!
    After a long discussion, we were taken to a distant hotelparking. But soon as we arrived, security did not want us there.
    We refused to go.
    Long story short, as things might get out of hand, we agreed to go home with one of the guys.
    So.. there we are.
    Poor Lieske, again she had to struggle up a steep mountain.
    And it feels like the first gear problem is getting worse. Anyway.
    We are now here. At the parents home of a unknown guy, who, in the end is friendly, so are his parents.
    We finished our meal. And are offered a room in their house which we friendly declined.
    Not the way we dealt with in Algeria, but it just feels a bit strange here.
    So. Tonight in our car, and hopefully tomorrow we just have a normal day. But I am afraid it will not be as we think.
    Tunisia is in the fear of corona, and foreigners are the ones who brought this to them.
    Fear rules the heart.

    Le moment décisif.

    However this is the famous phrase of my favourite photographer, Henri Cartier Bresson,
    We had our own one today.
    ..
    After the most unpleasant experience in the mountains of Bargou, were we were chased away, and in the end, found refuge in the home of one of the locals who might felt sorry for us, I booked for the four of us, a AirB&B to take shelter and gave a "think it all over".
    Yesterday we went into town and did some shopping, but much police and army on the roads, and people did not welcome you as foreigner. The full opposites of the days in Algeria.
    I did not feel very comfortable. But I am always a bit .... worried.
    So. I was the one who wanted to stay close to airports and ferry to get away as soon as possible.
    The German government was organising flights back to Germany for their countrymen.
    The Netherlands are very quiet.
    Anyway. It so difficult to leave the country because of the car. It's in my passport, and you need to get it sealed on a parking under customs law. In order to get it of your passport and you are free to leave.
    This is a procedure that costs at least a full day.
    Some we know are already waiting in this process for two days.
    And now. We heard that the Tunisian air space will be closed for all flights.
    And the last flight will be tomorrow, friday evening.
    We are in Sousse. 13.00h. Tunis Airport or any Tunis Douane is 150km away. Tomorrow it's Friday. The holy day for Muslim...
    ..
    Maarten en Janne went for it. They quickly loaded up their Landcruiser and drive up to the airport, which I think is the wrong place to be for the Douane, and I hope they drove straight to our friends on the camping in Nabeul who have done 90% of the procedure already.
    But... that's something we mighty hear tonight.
    As you can read.
    The decisive moment.
    We stayed. I don't believe in a God. And I know my Lieske. I think we are safe here. The whole world is a no go,.
    We have everything we need and more, even Johans water kettle is finnaly of good use..;)
    Just trapped in this country and have to wait until corona fades and the borders open again.
    We might return than home.
    ..
    Or continue our journey, with a delay of at least 30 days.

    But that's...another
    Decisive moment.

    Sudden death.

    As i write this, we are in the clouds.
    Although I never thought this would be possible, nor that this ever could happen.
    It's a fact.
    Roadtrip2020 came to a sudden end.
    We left Lieske.
    And i am still crying.
    Hope she will be safe, as we for sure will return.
    Maybe we can find somebody who will take care of her.
    But in the end.. she is, just a car. But a special one.
    .
    So.

    Today the message came to our ears that there would be a "rescue flight" from the Belgium government to Brussels.
    So we decided to go for it.
    Not because we wanted, but because of everybody we spoke, to grab this possible escape.
    It feels a bit like going from a safe place to a more danger place. But, maybe, as this gets out of hand in the whole world, and specially in Africa. We might regret not have taken this last chance.
    The main worry was the car on my passport.
    In the hours of queuing we often changed our mind.
    Leaving Lieske,
    All will be fine,
    It's part of the roadtrip...in the end,
    we decided to let customs have the last say.

    They asked how we entered the country, and we answered with the truth.
    The customs officer went away, asked some advice, and returned.
    No problem.
    And stamped our passport and flight ticket.
    ..
    Now, above France, we hope to return quickly to Tunisia and pick up what we left.
    We hope it won't last too long, and I hope we find some one taking care of her.
    Anyway. In this hour of world crisses, it might be better to be with our loved ones at home, than hiding away in a AirB&B in a strange city in a far away country....
    How strange this is. This weakness to run for a virus.
    Imagine it would be a real war. With real bullets and real horror...
    ..
    Almost at Brussels Airport.
    But not at home.
    The last miles before The End.

    Wisdom was never my strongest point.
    I hope this will turn out right.

    The re-invention of travel

    Yes.. it's not over yet. At last we just landed on Tunis Cartaghe Airport.
    As we are waiting for our luggage I am writing to tell you that we have picked up our journey.
    It is not going to be what we were dreaming about, but when we get to "Lieske" tomorrow, a new adventure will start.
    So. Hopefully she is still in place.
    Only 1 night...
    And we are reunited and ready for new adventures!

    After 4 months and 2 days.....

    It's was a restless and hot night in the Tunis Hotel Le Calife. 34° and a burning sun already at 06.00.
    Nervously had breakfast and after that,.. we took a taxi to Enfidha. At least we thought.
    It seems that the yellow cabs are only allowed in the city of Tunis and not outside.
    For those trips there is a transfer station were you have to wait till the 8 persons cab is full, and than leave.
    But.. as we are without doubt walking wallets, ehh.. tourists.. sorry,.. We were offered a whole 8 persons vehicle for just the two of us. With a 8 persons price .. of course ;)
    Anyway. We wanted to go as quickly as possible, so no doubt, and payed the 100TDZ . Smoking, phoning, talking and fastlaning we arrived at the Enfidha Hamamet Airport.
    First stop at the entrance by the police.
    After checking who we were and what we are here for, they started to laugh and pointed out Lieske, in the distance there was a shining yellow spot with, undoubtedly the form of our lost one..
    The taxi driver who did not understand our trip, now also got exited.
    She was there, waiting and looked in a good shape!
    Yessss!! Tears of joy!!
    ...
    Soon it became clear that we need to reorganize and clear everything out and decided to go back on our trail and do it on the camping.
    Nothing left to do more than check engine oil, coolant and connect the starter battery.
    As we were doing this, we again are checked by the police, who took pictures of the passport and papers. During this, Najeh turned up, a marketing employee of the airport who I contacted a several times for information about the car.
    I was a bit ashamed I did not have any gift for her, to show my gratitude. The old lady has been taken good care of and we did not need to pay any parking fees.

    20sec glowing.. First turn of the engine and there she was. Alive and ready to go!
    She had lost quite some gearboxoil, but I think she will be allright.
    Might check that out in Tunis. Otherwise in Italy.
    ..
    So my friends, the tears quickly dried in the hot sun and off we go!
    ..
    Did an extra round on the checkpoint to thank the police and on to the A1 up to Nabeul. Camping Jasmine. We do a recap of our steps and just hope this time the ferry will sail!    Lue lisää

    Hotel Le Calife

    We left Nabeul.
    After a hot night in Lieske.
    First thing as we arrived was sorting out our stuff. Funny to see all the "winter items" we brought with us and take up lots of space.
    Thinking of donating them.. but we might need them again back home.
    Finely we got it all sorted and enjoyed a nice evening.
    Met some people who also came back to collect their cars they had to leave. Sometimes it felt as if it was still March, and Notting had happend.

    The only thing that has probably (almost for sure) has died on us, is the carbattery in the rear. This one takes care for the interior lights and charging our devices. I left it on as we left, and it has been sucked empty. Maybe we get it back to live, but I doubt it.
    Wanted to buy a new one here, but prices are the same as in Europe, so we wait.
    The starter battery we bought in El Kala, Algeria, from our last dinars, and it was doing it's job.
    Again Algeria comes to rescue.
    We do think a lot about our friends there.
    ..
    Back on the road, we drove to Grombalia.
    Had a drink and decided to go further up to Tunis but have a stop at the beach of Hamman-Lif. We spent a few hours on the beach, in the shade of a palm tree.
    I fell asleep, and the sun burnt my feet and legs, as she was peeping around the leaves.
    It hurts..a bit.
    ..
    My beloved daughter thought it might be a good plan to go to Tunis during rush hour, and I, a bus driver with no fear, could not resist such a request.
    Again.. we survived, and parked at the front of the Hotel, which is a real pain. Especially with loads of traffic waiting for you to do your trick.
    ..
    If you ever want to go to Tunis, we highly recommend Hotel Le Calife, maybe low budget, but high in service and very kind!
    ..
    It was a kind of home comming, and as said before, it feels like nothing has happened.
    As the sun starts to set, the call for prayer fills the air.
    We feel grateful to be here.
    .
    Tomorrow we go to discover the city..
    Just 36hours left.
    Than the boot hopefully will bring us to civittavecchia.

    Musé Bardo

    Today is yesterday.
    And we just woke up and had the famous breakfast @Le Calife ;)
    Took a taxi to the Bardo Museum to see the vast collection of Roman mosaic.
    One of the most important collections in the world.
    Also a moment of sadness for the 23 people killed during a terrorist attack in this Museum in 2015.
    We, as traveling archaeologist, ;) had seen a lot of these mosaics, but some of the ones on display were unbelievable beautiful detailed and big!
    We left the -a bit of a maze- Museum around 14.00.
    Popped in a local sandwichebar and had a lunch. Decided to try and walk back to the hotel, 4km.
    But as the sun was high in the sky and burning in our neck.. a taxi was the rescue.
    Back in the hotel we enjoyed the cooling fan of the AC and dozed away for a time.
    Got up to have a walk and a small bite.
    Bed was waiting, as for today..

    Its to hot to travel...

    We cleared our room.
    Put the luggage in Lieske on a disorganised way. Think we will have time enough to sort it out as we will be waiting for the gates of the port to be opened..
    Nervous as hell.
    Drinking another bottle of water and looking to find the courage to go.
    It's so hot outside, Lieske is an oven.
    We probably have to spent more than 6 hours waiting in the harbour before the tickets can be exchanged for boardigpasses .
    The most fear is for the customs. How will they react on our invalid "permit de conduire" and the double stamps in our passport.
    How high will the fine be we will have to pay before we are allowed to leave Africa.
    I guess it will be around 10hours from now...until we know.

    Take a deep breath..

    We payed our debt to the Tunisian government.
    And are now waiting to board the vessel "Splendid" who will take us from Africa to Europe. A sail of 32 hours.

    It's a short footprint as any minute now the embarking can start.

    So all the fear..
    ..
    It's just all about money.

    Finally leaving Palermo....

    After many hours delay, and many hours waiting in the harbour of Palermo, we are finely on our way to Citavecchia. 24 hours? We will see.
