      Halong Bay

      27 octobre 2022, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Cat Ba Island - Cruise, Spa And Hike

      17 janvier, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After the amazing adventure of the Ha Giang Loop, we took a loooong 11.5h overnight sleeper bus journey to Cat Ba Islands, which is nestled in Lan Ha Bay (right next to the famous Ha Long Bay). As we arrived at 6.30am and still somewhat exhausted from the loop and the bus journey, we took it slow and planned our next 2 days on the island.

The next day, we went to the Flamingo Hotel. For $12, we got an ice cream, 30 minutes of Kayak, access to an exclusive beach, a free beer and snacks at the rooftop terrace, tokens to play some arcade games, pool access and, most importantly, access to their Japanese Onsen Spa (few pools/jacuzzis heated up to 43 degrees, plus steam room and sauna).

As it was a sunny day, we spend some time on the beach before going to their rooftop overlooking beautiful Lan Ha Bay. After playing some fun arcade games, we relaxed in the Onsen (men and women separated), which both of us had completely to ourselves.

The next day, we made a few friends over breakfast, hired a scooter and hiked up to a viewpoint overlooking Cat Ba Island. It was a short but medium-though hike that got our blood pumping. In the afternoon, we went back to the Flamingo Hotel and did pretty much the same as the day before, although this time without the Onsen.

For our last two days in the area (and time together), we booked an overnight cruise in Lan Ha Bay. Once we arrived in our private cabin, we quickly went to the upper deck, did a little photoshoot and enjoyed the views over this fantastic piece of earth. It was a perfect time, as the sun peaked out, inducing us to lounge on the deck.

After an hour or so, it was time to take a small boat to a nearby beach to play some beach volleyball and just soak in the scenery. It was not the nicest beach, unfortunately, and the sun stopped shining. Thus, once back on the boat, we hopped into the jacuzzi to warm up. The rest of the evening involved a delicious dinner, lots of dancing, and long conversations about our 5 weeks in Vietnam, as this was our last stop in the country (more on that in the next post).

On our last day, Amy took it easy in the morning, while I took the opportunity and kayaked a little bit in Lan Ha Bay. The peace and quiet in the morning, when the only thing you hear is nature was a perfect end to our cruise and Vietnam adventures.

Day 20 - to Halong Bay

      17 août 2023, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Early start from our Hanoi hotel to hop on the bus to Halong/ Lan Ha Bay
We stop at a service station that along with a toilet and coffee, gives us an education on the process of farming pearls from Oysters
Speed boat for the 5 of us and our luggage to the Unicharm.
Couple of hours chugging firstly through Halong Bay and then in to Lan Ha Bay, watching the gorgeous scenery, exploring our home for the next 48 hours, and enjoying good seafood for lunch.
Once we reach Lan Ha, we transfer to the tender, and head to the floating activity centre and jump in canoes.
2 hours canoeing round Halong Bay and swimming from a beach. It's all beautiful but there is a lot of rubbish about.
Back to the boat for Happy Hour, making spring rolls, and then dinner.

      Kayaking Amongst the Limestone 😍

      7 mars, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We got to go kayaking amongst the limestone mountains of Lan Ha Bay. It was serene. For most of the time, we were the ONLY ones there. This is unheard of if you were to go to Ha long Bay, which is the super popular tourist site, and only a few hours up from Lan Ha Bay.

Because the tides were lowish, we got to go into a hidden inlet through a small cave. This was so pretty. All around us are oyster farms and traps, which David explained how they all operate. Occasionally we would see some local Vietnamese fishermen or oyster farmers working the seas for food. Given my phone was in a waterproof bag, my photos came out awesome!

PS. Don't be fooled by Michael's face in the last photo. He was deeply happy and relaxed. His words "I can't help it if my serenity face looks grumpy as hell" 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      Ha Long Bay

      7 février, Vietnam ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

We left Hanoi for Ha Long Bay - the last 'real' stop for us on this trip. We were picked up early by our tour guide and driven 2hrs to the marina, where we transferred to a small boat to reach our cruise ship. We arrived at the cruise ship around 1pm, where we had some time to wander around the luxury cruise ship, meet the other guests and have lunch before we went out for a kayak that afternoon. We had a nice afternoon of kayaking around the limestone mountains (although Mike did most of the paddling, as usual). After the kayak, Mike jumped into the water for a quick dip as the sunset. Unfortunately, we had cloudy weather and the water wasn't very warm so the swim didn't last very long. Our first day of the cruise ended with a delicious buffet dinner, and an early night (as we're very tired these days). As we docked in Lan Ha Bay, there were much fewer boats around (50 boats in Lan Ha Bay, versus 1000 in Ha Long Bay) and absolutely no other boats docked near us, which made for a peaceful night.

On the second day of our cruise, we went out to Cat Ba Island and hiked up to Dinh Ngu Lam in Cat Ba National Park. After our hike, we visited Hospital Cave (a cave used as a hospital during the Vietnam War) and the local market in Cat Ba town. We headed back to the ship around 3pm, and had a slow afternoon before dinner. After dinner, we decided to give squid fishing a try for a laugh. We were not expecting to catch anything, but about 15min into fishing, Mike caught a 10cm squid! Cass almost caught one too, but pulled her line too abruptly and lost it. After the excitement of catching Mike's squid, we realized our guide had left with the squid. No less than 5min later, we find him in the kitchen where he has already boiled the squid for his dinner! He was just about to chop it up to eat it before we arrived.

On our last morning, we woke up early for a bike ride to Viet Han village on Cat Ba Island. It was a nice short 6km bike ride along the waters edge and through caves, and we eventually made our way to the town where we saw traditional houses and farms. The rest of the day was spent cruising back to the mainland, where we were transferred back to Hanoi for our last night in Vietnam.
